re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

All,

Which is the suggested route? our cars are Santro & City?

1) Road condition - even if it's longer - not an issue but will me miss any scenery?

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

Take Hunsur-Gonikoppa route - As per the latest posts above road is repaired

Take Hunsur-Periyapatna-Siddapur if ou like scenery (not so great!) and traffic is less on this route + 10-15 KM longer!

Just came back from Thalassery. took Gonikoppa route. total distance 308km from Thalassery to Gottigere (South Bangalore). Driving time 5;30 hours. Upto Perumbadi the road is fine. Afterwards, the surface is very rough and many places the rain had negative effect on the road. After having gone through both Gonikoppa and Ammathi route, I have a feeling that, Coorg district is the most negleted place in Karanataka with regard to the quality of roads.

Sarin

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

Drove solo to Kannur and back - started from Bangalore BTM Thursday @ 4.30PM and reached Kannur @11.45PM. Took the usual BLR-Srirangapatna-Yelwala-Hunsur-Gonikoppa-Perumpady-Kootupuzha-Irity-Kannur route. Drove back on monday afternoon, took same route.

Srirangapatna-Yelwala : Average/below average road quality
Hunsur-Tittimati - Bad patches at some places but OK
Maakuta-Kootupozha - Repair/relaying work is complete and in good condition
Iritty-Mattanur : Good condition but repair work is under progress @ couple of places

For the first time I spotted an elephant in this route - Somewhere in between Perumpadi-Makoota. He was standing on right lane and saw him only when I reached close. By the time I realised there is an elephant Sparky already crossed :-)

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

had been to kannur last weekend. both the routes(gonikoppa and siddapur/virajpet) now have good and bad sections. one can take the siddapur/virajpet for sightseeing or if in a hurry take the gonikoppa route.

srirangapatna-yelawal-gonikoppa route is approx. 20kms shorter than mysore orr-siddapur-virajpet route.

on the makutta ghat road they have installed Guradrails at some places.it makes you 'feel' safer while driving through that stretch.

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

From the update from Latheesh and ad75, I understand the road is relatively better.

I'm traveling to Iritty on Friday morning. Planning to take the Gonikoppal route. I hope there are proper road/direction markings through this route.

This is my first trip on this route. Anything to watch out for? All inputs welcome.

Regards
Rex

PS: I hope to have a good (read safe) trip arriving in Cannanore district on the Assembly election result day :-)

umm.... ah.... on election results day? While driving through the "Red Fort", if the exit polls are of any value, you will need to watch out for (1) flying missiles (2) shrapnel (3) people running with a group behind them ....

sigh!!!

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

Sorry guys, a quick question. Is there any night traffic issues on Bangalore-Gonikoppa-Iritty-Payyavur route?

Couldn't check previous posts as I need to travel within few hours.

I travelled this route 2 weeks back to Kannur and return. The roads are motorable is what i would say, not great at all, especially the stretch between Gonikoppal and Virajpet. The surface is patched, however there still remain some potholes. Be a bit careful and go at moderate speeds, you should be fine.

Happy and Safe journey...

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

Hello,

Can one of the 'Irittians' or anybody familiar to Iritty refer some decent hotels for a family to stay for a day?

We had been to Surya and KK Tourist home during our earlier visits and were not very happy about them due to the 'BAR' facility they were having and the number of people keep visiting and hanging around to activate and re-charge!

Regards
Rex

I just checked with my friend. He suggested 2 hotels
Names are
Greens and Pommanam

Both are very near to Iritty bridge on Thaliparamba road, as per him there is no baaaar attached to these.
