Siddapura -Ammathi => Take left turn at Siddapura. Roads are wider and occassional patholes.
Ammathi - Virajpet => Roads are wider and occassional patholes.

I took almost 2hrs to reach Perumpadi Checkpost from Hunsur. Km wise, I belief this is around 15km more than the regular gonikkuppa road.

Thanks

hi rajesh,

would you suggest this road to avoid the hellish craters on the gonikoppa route?

I had taken the bus last week from Kannur and the roads seemed to be bad, especially after iritty and then the virajpet- gonikoppal - hunsur stretch. I had a feeling that maybe the mananthavady - gundalpet roads were much easier and better to drive compared with the iritty route.
Am planning to make a trip next week in my car and was wondering which route to take. Has anyone taken the mananthavady route to go to kannur recently?

Hi ad75, I don't have the first hand recent experience on Gonikkuppa - Hunsur road. As per other friends, this road has less craters than the usual Hunsur - Gonikkuppa road.
I took 4hrs 30minutes to reach Thalipparamba from Mysore. So I hope Periyapatna - Siddapura - Ammathi - Virajpet will be the best at this point of this.

Thanks
Rajesh

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

Hi all!
I have been reading about posts asking to avoid Hunsur-Gonikkupa road. As RajeshK pointed out, would someone be able to confirm if the Gonikkuppa-Hunsur road (Road towards Mysore) being better?
Also what would one miss if one avoids this road? i.e. any scenic, heavenly views?
Thanks in advance!

i hope i ve got your question right.
both are same there is no hunsur- gonikoppa,gonikoppa- hunsur seperate routes.

you have two options :-

1.hunsur - gonikoppal - virajpet - bad roads (between hunsur and gonikoppa) as mentioned in prevoius posts
2.hunsur - piriyapatna - siddapur - virajpet - better roads - longer by 15kms approx

the 2nd route should be equally scenic if not more than the 1st ( the driver will not have the option to look at the scenery,he she would be busy negotiating the potholes/craters in the 1st route). had been to siddapur long back the scenery was good.

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

Has anyone traveled the mananthavady - Sultan Bathery route recently? Am planning to take that route on way back, since it seems to be better and less curved road compared to mananthavady route.
Any latest updates or news on that route would be much appreciated.

Latheesh, you need to take the left turn after the Periyapatna town towards Siddapura. U will be welcomed by a huge roadhump. There after few mtrs, road is bad. Afterwards untill you reach Coorg district, the road has smooth surface, afterwards till you reach Siddapura road is rough and narrow. After reaching Siddapura, you have to drive till the dead end and take a left. There is a sign board too.. left-> Virajpet, right-> Kusalanagara (I belief so). Once u took left and drive for another ~10km u will reach Ammathi, afterwards Virajpet. Continue the same road to reach Perumpadi.

There are only two major turns, one at periyapatna towards siddapura and at siddapura towards Virajpet. There is not much of sceneries..only the coffee estates on both sides and villages(May be Iam used to such landscapes..!!).
I suggest to take this road only in daylight if you travelling for the first time..

Thanks
Rajesh

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

Got back from the trip to kannur. While going took the elevala bypass and the gonikoppa route. Both roads were bad, and the journey took 7 hrs. Way back took the periyapatna route - roads were very much better and further down instead of the usual srirangapatna bypass at mysore, took the mysore ring road. This makes the stretch longer by 6 kms, but given the good road, doesnt affect the overall drive time.

What was the total driving time via periyapatana route? The 7 hours mentioned must be after including the break, right?
Regards,
Sarin

Sarin,

For me, the Hunsur - Perumbadi Checkpost via Periyapatna - Siddapura took ~2hrs. Almost 60-65kms.

Thanks

Thanks Rajesh. This is very slow, right? Why is it like that? is it becuase of not so good road or one can't speed because of the nature of the road itself?

Sarin

Yes Sarin, I was driving slow. This is the first time in this route and the road surface is rough. Also the car was fully loaded and we took few bio breaks in between.!!

Thanks
Rajesh

re: Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

Just back from the trip to Kannur today. Took the periyapatna route. The road till siddapur is pretty bad, some bad potholes and a lot of not so bad ones. The road is cut and patched very badly till you reach the kootupuzha turn off into Kerala. I took the Gonikoppa route 2 months back so cant really compare them now. Took a snap of an accident on the infamous Makutta inclines. The banks are pretty steep so although the roads are good please be careful. Looks like the M800 slipped in after it hit the swift.

OMG! this is bad. Do you know if anyone got hurt seriously? Apparently, the swift was almost on his wrong side of the road.
