. I have anyways planned to take the world renowed Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Ooty to Mettupalayam through which I will be viewing the otherside. In that case, based on your suggestion, I will take the kotagiri route on my return as well.

Yes, if you have train tickets to nilgiri mountain railway, then kotagiri route by road is the obvious choice.

Came back yesterday after our vacation from Ooty. As everyone already mentioned the Kotagiri route was far far better compared to Coonoor route. I went to Coonoor to see Sims Park, but that was enough to rue that route. We were stuck behind lorries and buses taking the fun out of driving in the mountains.

By the way the weather was awesome. But we were very unlucky since they closed Doddabetta peak. They had laid new roads and are waiting for a minister to come and open the roads.

What is the road condition between Mettupalayam & Coonoor? Or is it better to go through MTP - Kotagiri - Coonoor? Need Suggestions

Kotagiri does not come in for Conooor. You have to take take MTP-Conoor-Ooty road only. Not sure about the current conditions though. Please check on that.

All good, the roads are in pretty decent shape and doable. Not much rains seen except for the occasional showers on a daily basis. Just did a trip. BTW you will have to pass through Coonoor to reach Kotagiri. You could probably bypass the main city junction though.

On the Thoppur-Mettur-Bhavani route:
Last I drove that side few months ago, road conditions were decent, during peak hours there is way too much local traffic and slow moving trucks can be painful.

Unless you're driving during off peak hours (or enjoy driving on two laned state highways and want a break from the four laned NH), the NH will be faster, especially Salem and Sankari are easily bypassed, Salem has new flyovers that were opened about 1.5 years ago.

Not sure of road conditions, but surely the Kotagiri option is better in terms of traffic density.

Looking at updates on Bangalore-Salem-Kerala, I was tempted to suggest:

Chennai-Trichy-Kulithalai-Karur bypass - Aravakurichi-Dharapuram bypass - Pollachi.

Just to conform I also checked Google. It though suggests, Gunaseelam- Kulithalai. But I would sitck to tolled road between Trichy-Karur.
