I think that may turn out to be longer route. Not sure (I need to check).

But not a bad option. However I dont know the current condition of Thirthahally-Nagar road. Usually its decent. But I have not driven on that nor have any recent confirmations.

If others can update that would be good.

I have a reservation at JLR Kollur (Aanejhari butterfly camp) this weekend. What should be the best route from Bangalore in terms of road conditions? Google suggesting 3 routes :

1. Chitradurga - Channagiri - Shimoga - Ripponpet - Nagara - Nittur - Kollur
2. Hiriyur - Tarikere - Bhadra - Tirthahali - Nagara - Nittur - Kollur
3. Hassan - Belur - Aldur - Balehonnur - Hariharpura - Agumbe - Kollur

Please advise.

The JLR is between Vandse and Kollur. So it does not make sense to take the Nagar-Nittur-Kollur road and go through Kollur town.

Its probably easier to either do:

Hosanagara-Hullikal-Sampakatte-Ampar-Vandse-JLR
or
Agumbe-Someshwar-Ampar-Vandse-JLR


I personally think Agumbe is relatively easier.

Option 3, without doubt, since you need not go all the way till Kollur! Just did this route 5 days back and it is in pristine condition, barring some bad patches on the outskirts of Chikmagalur town, if you are going via the same. I believe there is an interior road via Gendehalli for Belur-Aldur, not sure of the condition, though.

Another point - take the Balehonnur - Sringeri - Agumbe route, instead of going all the way till Hariharapura, as suggested by Google maps - there is a sharp left turn at Jayapura for Sringeri.

Also note that this area is experiencing extremely heavy rains this week, which might continue till the weekend as per IMD. Do factor that in, while planning your driving hours. I'd factor in at least 10 hours, including a breakfast break.

Remains good. Regular updates available on Mangalore thread too in case you missed.

There are few rough patches between Guruvayanakere and Naravi but that is nothing to worry about.

Karkala Hebri too is in good condition.

I have traveled on route 2 to Anejhari Butterfly camp JLR (which is a few KM from Kollur). This route is good for any car. After taking Hiriyur exit from NH-44, while passing Vani Vilas Sagar (on your left), the road is narrow and has few patches and potholes. Be a little careful while driving on this section. Tirthahalli bypass road is narrow and patchy but entirely drivable without worries.

Recently one of my friend took Harihar - Honnali - Ripponpet - Hosanagara - Nagara - Kollur route. He said this route is good except for some random potholes.

Took this route this weekend. Road from Channagiri to Shivamoga is bad, with lot of road construction happening.

Route 1 is best avoided for now, maybe in few months when road work is done, it could be a good option again..

Also do watch out for big craters on the Bangalore-Pune highway after Neelamangala, roads have deteriorated closer to bangalore with craters that can do serious damage to your tyres/alloys.
