Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

I use Jio Fiber with 150 Mbps plan which costs me about Rs .1200 monthly. The plan also includes a TV set top box and subscription to major Ott platforms. I think it's a VFM package.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

We use two internet connections in Bangalore to avoid outages. In our previous apartment we were using a combination of Jio 300MBps and an ACT 100MBps. Overall the cost comes to around 2.4k (1600 Jio+ 799 ACT)

We then moved to a new place where Jio is not available. Now we are using Airtel 300MBps and ACT 100MBps which is slightly more expensive at 2.5k (1700 Airtel+ 799 ACT).We had tried using only one connection initially, but the reliability of ACT was not great. Jio gives great reliability in Bangalore with us having only one outage in 3 years of use. The installation was done just 2 hours after raising a request and even later uninstallation was a very smooth process. The Set top box and OTT subscriptions covered almost everything we needed.

Airtel in comparison has given us around 1 outage every 2 months. The OTT subscriptions and plans are not on par with Jio.
ACT has been the most unreliable connection for us across apartments. One common issue I see with ACT is that their routers have very short power backup. While I have power backup for all my routers and mesh, the ACT common router often disconnects. We are waiting for Jio to be available in the new place, where we only need few more subscribers to start services, post which we can do away with the additional connection.

Not really free, because you are paying for all that mobile data as part of the packages.

But you make a very good point that, on top of our mobile-phone packages, wired broadband may not be necessary for many of us.

One can!

If and when our Airtel fibres goes down, yes, I tether, and my wife just uses the data available to her on her mobile devices. Do we notice the difference? For general browsing and stuff-on-the-net, no. But when I come to upload a batch of 20-50 photos, which may be 500k-1m, I absolutely do: over the fibre, it zips, but over mobile, it crawls.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

Railwire/RailTel wired fiber at home, 2nd home and combined with Airtel for office.
Been using the same since the last 10+ years.
Never seen more than an hour of downtime.
I pay yearly upfront. Works out to be at approx. 1100/month for Railwire/Raitel and 580 for Airtel.
Speeds vary between 100-150mbps.
Service is always a call away.
(Benefit of living in a small city is guess).

Agree with you on the money part as we all are forced to take tempting plans with phone connections (Jio gives 2.5 gb per day for 365 days for around 3K rupees) and we are always on the road for weeks continuously (planning another long drive for weeks to maha kumbh mela shortly and need data). The speeds are good enough for personal usages as there are no professionals.

Also I am not sure if anyone else have the signal connections with wired router in house. I have a 3 storied villa with 3 occupants, one in each floor. We communicate on Whatsup within house. The router is on the middle floor and the 4 antennas of router have been placed in horizontal position as we need signals vertically and not horizontally. Even after trying this juggad, the signal is not coming to some rooms. I bought a booster and the phones keep on swapping between the booster and the router creating nuisance. Another issue with frequent outages and the reason for outages is not some issue with fibre but because of our neighbouring community don't have a backup generator etc and the battery in the signal amplifier machine lasts only 2 hours. Finally I have peace of mind after getting rid of the wired connection.

I have the same horizontally, we communicate by shouting over google home devices.

Here's my setup:
2 fiber connections, airtel (200) + jio (100), managed through a multi-wan router.

On top of that, 4 DECO mesh routers hard wired to each other for a seamless mesh (non-switching) experience in every corner of the house.

So practically I never have an internet outage and there are no wifi blackout zones.

All routers have a UPS too, so no power outage either (because this network takes about 10 mins to boot up and stabilize if it goes down)

You need a Mesh setup for that. It should provide you with seamless connection wherever you are.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

I am paying an eyewatering 20 GBP per month (on contract of 2 years) for a mere 60mbps of speed in Scotland Glasgow :( The original plan from Openreach using telephone wired internet (like BSNL dial-up) was 35 GBP, at speeds that were hopeless. Upload speeds were exceptionally bad. Internet and information (newspaper subscription) is too expensive here.

I feel India has the best fibre-optic network spread and most economical too.

Interesting story: Back in Pune, my friend bought a house in 2019, in a very remote place called Pirangut, the building was right between a farmland and the main road towards Mulshi, I was helping him set up his house. The local internet provider had got fibre optic network even before airtel and tatasky came in, and they were competing for customers aggresively.

In Glasgow, the area where I stay is only 4.5 kilometers away from City Center and did not have any infrastructure laid down for fiber-optic cables in 2023! They did the digging and cable laying in mid-2024 and HyperOptic started their services from October 2024 onwards. Openreach is setting up theirs now as I type this.

Talk about advancement! It was like going back by at least 10 years when I had to use dial-up connection for the first year in 'Great' Britain. Also, there was a waiting time of 7 days to get an appointment for internet setup! In Pune, the local guys did it in 4 hours flat after we made the first call! (in Pirangut no less) This was in 2019 end just before Covid started.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

I have been using the internet for a while. I started with dial-up over a hard line, then dial-up using a Tata Walky Wireless Phone, switched over to 3G dongles, and moved to hard line broadband, PtP Wi-Fi, Ethernet-based internet, and finally FTTH. In case you are wondering why I used so many different types of internet, it's because I moved around a lot.

The maximum amount I ever paid was ₹1150 per month, inclusive of taxes, for a 150 Mbps connection about 4 years ago. Currently, I am paying ₹650 plus taxes for a 125 Mbps connection.

I have noticed that local ISPs are often better and more consistent than the larger ISPs.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

Recently I got Airtel Airfiber installed at our native village home. Since there are no wired ISP in our village, and at Rs 499 per month at 40 mbps, it is a great value. It works find most of the times for streaming, web browsing and WFH, but during evening hours, the speeds go down drastically and sometimes mobile apps dont even load. (only 4g tower present in our village). Overall satisfied with the service.

I am with the same airtel act combo now as our new society does not have Jio. Agree on the OTT and outage part

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

Here in Goa, I use Ethernet Xpress' fibre broadband at my home, company office and company warehouse. We pay Rs. 4,100/- for six months and the speed we get is around 100 MBPS.
EXPL is very reliable in terms of the TAT for repairs. Very rarely do we have to wait for over a day to get the connection working after a fiber cut.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

I am using Tata Play Fiber here in Pune and it works seamlessly. Even if there is a problem which is very rare, they come back online very soon. I am very much satisfied from the services so far. My current plan is 850/month for 100Mbps speed.
