Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

Was evaluating a switch to airtel over the current ACT connection - since Airtel is cheaper.

Till now my Airtel experience has been horrendous to say the least. Of the 13 days of having this, connection is down for 6 days and current down time is not resolved since 2 days. Each day I get an SMS informing that due to some issue, the resolution is postponed to the next day and some engineer is being allocated for a time slot the next day. Shocking to say the least in today's age.

In contrast, ACT has not had any issues since the lockdown. Even prior to that. the occasional few times there was connectivity loss, services were restored within a day at the most.
With ACT though, some times during the afternoon, I have had b/w issues during some live calls.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

Hello,

I needed guidance from experts on the forum regarding broadband usage. I have been using Jio Fiber for almost 1 year now and my current Gold plan (speed: 250mpbs) is about to expire in 2 days. I looked at the available plans and realized that Jio does not have a plan with 250mbps speed any more. There is one plan with speed of 150mpbs and a higher plan with speed of 300mbps. I wanted to know if the plan with 150mbps speed would be enough? There are five people in the house, two of which will be “working from home” for 10-12 hours every day. Apart from this, the internet would be used for browsing and streaming content on Netflix/Hotstar/Amazon Prime. Do you think the 150mbps plan (Rs. 999/month) would be enough or should I go for the 300mbps plan (Rs. 1499/month)?

I am no expert, but here's my observation -

Along with the speed you should also look at what is your average monthly data consumption in the last quarter or 5 months.

If data-cap is not an issue with your ISP, then given your consumption pattern, 150 Mbps is good enough.

Personal experience - My TV (Vu 4K) easily runs at the highest resolution in Amazon Prime, on a mobile hotspot, with the mobile placed in the Hall and the TV in the bedroom (the only opening in the wall being a door). I have atleast had to run this set up 4 times in the past 6 months, sometimes 6 to 7 hrs. at stretch, when my primary ISP went down due to heavy rain.

Also, I was using the ACT Storm 150 Mbps till last month before ACT upgraded the plan to 200 Mbps - free of cost.

My data consumption is between 700 to 800 GB per month.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!

The data limit for the both the plans is 3300GB per month (Jio labels this as unlimited) which is more than sufficient as per my usage pattern in the past 6 months.

I am amazed by the fact that you are able to stream content on your television through mobile hotspot. I have never thought of trying this as I have no hopes from my mobile operator (Vodafone).

When I got a Fire Stick at home it freed up one Chromecast device which I promptly transferred to my backpack. I have used it several times to stream Netflix on hotel TVs using my mobile hotspot (I keep the same SSID name on the hotspot as my home WiFi, so no reconfiguration is required either).

Nobody would refuse more bandwidth, of course, and it's very helpful in a multi-device, heavy usage setup, but you'll be surprised that a decent quality HD stream (say 720p/1080p) works just fine on a stable low-double digit Mbps connection. Keyword 'stable'.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

Hey Folks
Anyone knows the SLA for downtime repairs for JioFiber? My Hathway is down since 4pm yesterday and the engineers are clueless and keep asking me - "it is not up yet sir?". Its going to be 24h soon ... In these times of WFH, 24h official SLA I find is frankly unacceptable.

I am considering switching to Jio now that they are promising equal 1:1 up/down speed ratio and the cabling is underground unlike the others...

Thanks

I had the same issue a few months back and it took 2.5 days for Hathaway to find the right lineman for my area to get it fixed. I took an airtel connection at 500Rs as a backup second connection with landline. Got rid of my defunct bsnl and this now means for about 200rs more per month I have broadband redundancy albeit at 24Mbps instead of 200, but hey I will be able to work and so will my wife and kids. I have the jio fibre pillar just outside my gate (not underground) but they never did call me even though I registered on their site.

It really depends on your specific location. I am staying near Ernakulam south and they can only give me 16MBps real world, even though they advertise 40. No idea about real-world stability.

PS: I am on Asianet and it comes with its own baggage.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

Paid 9k for a 100 mbps connection. Includes a Dual Band Router. This is for the yearly unlimited package through S Net & local cable operator. Actual speeds vary between 52mbps to 84mbps.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

Finally after much deliberation and a constant push, we managed to get Airtel to plug our society with Airtel's v-fiber connectivity. Must say the wait has been completely worth it. Incredible speeds and excellent stability so far. Got a 300Mbps 1:1 connection for roughly 1500/- per month which is what we were paying for a 40Mbps connection with Tata.

Do check your speeds with fast.com as well. I had a 100 mbps airtel connection and it always showed 100mbps as speed in speedtest.net, whereas in reality it is not. In fast.com I got 38 to 40 mbps as a standard speed.
