Netflix, Hotstar, Facebook, others to offer only SD content as users binge watch

YouTube will temporarily default HD and ultra-HD streaming to SD content at bitrates no higher than 480p on mobile networks, until March 31

Had my first lockdown outage today. Called the provider, they answered the phone & said they will send the technician in a couple of hours. The problem got resolved even before that - don't know how.

But anyway, that answered my question - providers are staffed & working.

Why don't they make all channels free on DTH? It is not like they are going to incur any extra costs, this will also free up bandwidth - most DTH operators also provide internet services. I guess this will require an act of Parliament LOL!

This is the time when people sitting at home & feeling bored may subscribe for more premium channels. This is a good time for them to get more business.

This is without additional cost.

My regular plan is ACT Storm - 150 Mbps / 650 GB
Did you check if the speed bump actually works? I clicked that banner on their app last month and again this month, but there's no change in speeds when tested or the FUP noted in my account.

Yes, I did actually, multiple times.

The lower speeds are all 2.4 GHz.

I opted for an increase in speed starting 9th March, so the bump can be observed mainly in the 5GHz range.

My normal plan is Storm (150 Mbps).

All speeds measured with 1 brick wall in between router and my mobile phone.

They have extended the validity till April end.

Thank you.

You're fortunate then. I'm on the same plan & their latest model router, checked the 5 GHz band. No change from regular speeds.

In Goregaon(W), its like a cartel kind of environment, what with you have a single unbranded provider for a building complex. Does Airtel OR any other branded service provider possibility there in Goregaon(W)?

I can confirm experiences of a few colleagues in Goregaon (E) that options are mostly limited to one local cable operator who offers expensive internet. Airtel is present in Goregaon (E) but it is mostly copper wire and fiber is very rare. One desperate colleague went with Tikona which is hit or miss at best. Other option is Hathway which was popular in western suburbs few years ago but haven't heard much of them recently.

It totally depends on housing society in the end. If the complex is big with many residents, there may be Jio fiber or someone else. If not, then hopes are slim.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

I had Airtel home broadband from 2011 to 2015 in Mulund. It had 99% uptime. And if anything goes wrong, the technician was there at home within an hour of logging the call.

This is what is happening, like when we contact any other operator, he just asks the address and then he suggests us to go back to the one operator, whom we try to avoid. They kind of have an understanding among themselves.

Its kind of logjam and do NOT know how to escape from this situation.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

Jio fibre.
Combo plan which I have to recharge weekly for 235 rs. Monthly comes to 940 Rs.
100 Mbps with 4000 Gb data. My consumption is between 500-700 gb a month.
Pretty good deal considering I was paying Airtel 1250 Rs a month for a 40 mbps 200gb plan.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

I am paying Rs 2200 for 7 months. For a 18 Mbps plan Unlimited. Translates to Rs 314 per month.
Checked the app and my last month data usage was around 200GB. Have been with this ISP since 3 years and must admit they have been great with negligible downtime. I can hardly recall when the internet was down.

I was on a higher plan earlier. Since, upgrade and downgrade is at the tap of a app I tried it to see if a lower speed meets my needs. Else, I could simply upgrade again on the app. It's been wonderful.

At peak usage.
1. Me on my laptop and 2 mobiles
2. Wifey on her Macbook, iPad, mobile.
3. 3 staff on their respective laptops and mobiles.
4. Kiddo watching YouTube cartoons on TV. No Set Top Box. All TV usage is via internet and can safely say the TV is on 12 hours a day.
5. A TPLink CC Camera which captures footage in HD with audio to keep a eye on the kiddo 24X7 with grandparents watching the live stream in other cities. Planning to install 2 more cameras.
6. A relative on their mobile when they visit us for short stays.
7. A Mi Air purifier.

Have not experienced any lag whatsoever. None of us are into heavy downloading, uploading movies, large files etc. We all use for basic browsing and streaming videos and not had any issues.

I am eagerly waiting to experience any issue so I could upgrade but have not faced any so far. Touchwood.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

Anybody using Jio fiber in Koramangala 1st/4th block (bangalore)?
I have ACT Lightening (200 Megs) and very happy with it. But would like to move to Jio for the unified experience.
