Re: Elon Musk offers to buy Twitter for US$ 41 billion. EDIT: Acquires Twitter for $44 billion

How will moderation work ?
Who decides what is right ?

On TBHP, there are certain issues that are not discussed at all and there is a clear line. Not sure when you allow everything, how do you draw the line. Else allow everything but run foul with the govts.

Also someone who openly makes controversial posts. Latest one is the exchange with AOC. Extreme left vs extreme right. What balance? It would be funny if it were not so sad.

For all its flaws Twitter was the best platform for micro messaging. Yes it was an echo chamber at times but that could be fixed without uprooting everything the platform stands for.

Elon will run Twitter to the ground if he doesn't step back and appoint people to run it well. This is not Tesla or SpaceX with tangible products. The product is conversation. Free and open. With real people. And having an owner with oversized power who posts without a filter will kill Twitter faster than one can imagine.

Re: Elon Musk offers to buy Twitter for US$ 41 billion. EDIT: Acquires Twitter for $44 billion

While revenue too would be important for Elon, I'd expect the overall goal would be the shift in power and influence from the old lot to himself and his interests.

With that in mind, Elon's challenge would be to first recover from the rapid deterioration Twitter has seen in the quality of conversation and to further improve it from current levels over some time.

How?
Some guesses and thoughts:

* Fairly obvious: Tweaking of backend-software/algorithms/AI for better quality content to get highlighted.

* Both anonymous users and identified users bring meaningful content to platforms (T-Bhp too is an example). One issue Twitter has been facing is of anonymous trolls and bots hampering quality.

A Blue Tick with payment could be a means to have identified and verified users at a large scale (while also getting some revenue).

* Such scale of Blue Tick users would also help tweak which content gets seen more.

* Over time, there could also be other classifications by different colour ticks or otherwise (possibly only at the back-end) to then have better interest-based customization of content per user interests. Eg. Political parties, news agencies etc could pay more and have a more focused lot reading them. They would happily pay significant amounts for greater reach (corporate and employee/associate accounts)

* Once content quality improves and the Twitter-Voice is even more powerful, getting good returns from the investment should hardly be a challenge for someone like Elon.

* Two obvious returns would be (a) monetary, and (b) influencing public discourse and policy.

* Another major related return hardly talked about is the implicit "perception of threat" from someone in a position of such influence is in. Even decision-makers in governments need to be wary of them, especially in democracies, due to the transient nature of power for politicians; power which is dependent on popularity.

This alone can mean a huge difference in revenues of other businesses over long spans of time. Having the edge at crucial times in global competition can have an immense impact; impact to the extent of being near-historic.

The unsaid word which accompanies such power is more than what is generally realized. There usually is more to such deals than what the eye of the average person can see.

~~~~~
* Discovered this thread only now, and pardon me if parts above are a repeat. Have only managed to skim through the past few pages.
* Have avoided much due to the political nature of the topic, and that being unwelcome on the forum.
And he won the lawsuit, quite easily.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/06/b...%20last%20year.
That said I am not condoning his behaviour but the fact also is that its not the full story either. The pedo comment was an angry reaction to a comment by a British diver Unsworth, who said in a television interview that his mini sub was a "PR Stunt and that he can “stick his submarine where it hurts". In my personal opinion, I dont think flying lead engineers from Tesla, SpaceX and Boring company to Thailand so that they could come up with something quick for the rescue and then do tests to prove the validity was purely a PR stunt.
He did publicly apologise for his comment though which was shocking even for Elon who is anything but politically correct.
Not at times. Their moderation policies were/are extremely suspect. Look at twitter in India vs twitter in USA? Do you feel they have a moderation policy at all?
I am a big proponent of free speech. I think Twitter would be a much better place given it will be an engineering driven company and not company full of activist from only one side of the political spectrum.
Elon Musk is such an attention-seeker always. We know what happened to the ventilators he promised to produce when the pandemic began too.
You have a very low opinion about Parag. You think he belongs to Milton Friedman school of thought which treats only shareholder as stakeholders? From what I have heard, like most Twitter staff, he is left leaning. That is one of the main reasons why he couldn't get along with Elon from the get-go. From what I have observed, Parag believes in the correct stakeholder theory, and not himself and shareholders.
He couldn't get justice to anyone other than shareholders. When you are already very rich, extra money in exchange of loss of power is not a desired outcome.
"If On Way To Office, Return Home": Twitter Says Layoffs To Begin Today
Twitter will tell employees by email on Friday about whether they have been laid off, temporarily closing its offices and preventing staff access, following a week of uncertainty about the company's future under new owner Elon Musk.
https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/twit...-ndtv_bigstory
All staff are set to receive an email with the subject "Your Role at Twitter" by 09:00 Pacific time (16:00 GMT) on Friday.
The company said office access would be immediately limited "to help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data".
Well if you're going to bring politics into a thread about Twitter takeover, you could at least be factually accurate. Dozens of indictments related to election interference and demonstrable proof on one hand, and wild tin-foil conspiracy theories on the other.
Hope we will see more push from the new service running over distributed platform that Jack Dorsey is working. Getting good engineering resources will not be problem since now there will be plenty available.
The point about endorsing tweets of verified users is almost like advertising. Its not free speech, its paid speech Ultimately its a business and hope they dont use the lofted ideas about town square and free speech.
Social media companies started with free services, enabled sharing and then used ads for revenue. Now we a see a individual treating it directly as a business in every sense and feels like he is doing a service to society.
I see them more as extra perks - like youtube premium with no adverts, facebook marketplace adverts with better reach etc etc. There is nothing that stops you from using the service as it is.
Free speech has got nothing to do with reach but the fact that you are allowed to express your opinion in a fair impartial manner.
How else do they remain in business? How do they pay their employees and their bills? Nothing in this world is free and an impartial platform would indeed be a service to current divided world. I am looking forward to see how it pans out.
Youtube ad free service is for viewers. Facebook marketplace is for advertisers. They are not expressing their opinion on politics or any other ideology.
You cant have newspapers getting money from sone and putting news based on that. We all know how impartial platforms actually divide the world. Thinking they will unite the world is like expecting politics to improve our world.
We can agree to see how it pans out
Twitter sued for mass layoffs..
Quote:
Twitter was sued over Elon Musk's plan to lay off about half of its workforce, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing a class-action lawsuit filed in a San Francisco federal court.
Twitter employees say the company is eliminating workers without enough notice in violation of federal and California law, the report said.
I haven't been able to logon to Twitter since morning.
Internal sabotage??
Quote:
Twitter users on the web are facing login issues. According to a CNBC report, users complained on Friday that they were facing trouble accessing feeds.
According to the website tracker Downdetector, as quoted in a CNBC report, 90 per cent of individuals reported problems with Twitter web, while 6 per cent faced issues with the app.
