re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

A few shows I would highly recommend.

-- The Night Of : Beautifully shot drama about a man charged of rape and murder. A who-dunnit and an intense drama rolled into one

-- Killing Eve : Pure gleeful entertainment. So good its makes me laugh with delight!

-- Billions: A little too 'television-y' but very entertaining show. Watch a bit to know if its your thing

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Am I allowed to comment on Web Series : If Yes,

Please avoid "Damaged" - I guess this is on Hungama.
Though a good plot,
However horrific acting, joined by useless dialogues. Unjustified use of abusive language with no sense at all.
Pathetic Screenplay for a murder mystery.

Couldn't tolerate it after 3rd episode.

I liked Broadchurch too. However, it becomes overbearingly slow by the end of season 2, so I dropped it. I loved Dark. IMO, it's similar or slightly better than Stranger things.
Thanks for the heads-up on Shetland.

One of the rarest shows where every new season betters the previous one. Season 4 is by far the best. 2 more seasons are confirmed .

I was thinking Stranger Things itself was fantastic. Thanks for the recommendation will give it a shot.

In general I've seen European series are way ahead of their conterparts across the pond. Most are 8-10 1 hr episodes, no concept of dragging for 20-24 episodes.

I totally agree! Season 3 was really good.. and now we are onto Season 4.

A perfect example where each following season gets worse than the previous one is Suits. We've stopped watching it now, seeing how boring it's become.

Finished off Good Wife this week, and totally enjoyed bingeing the seven seasons. Liked Lucca, so started Good Fight, just for her.
It's quite dissimilar, but OK for someone weaning off of good wife.

I loved Dark. One of the best series that I have ever watched. Will put it up there close to Breaking Bad.

The french series I was talking about is The Forest. Very good series and doesn't really bore you. We binge watched it - it was that good.

Easily the best Indian show ever. Writing, screenplay, direction and the brilliant acting by all is simply mind-blowing. Nawazzudin outshines himself but the surprise is Saif. Career best performance by both. Binge watched and I want more.
Anything else similar on Netflix. I watched it twice and want more.

Also, the french series 'The Forest' similar to OR same as 'The Killing' the Danish series?

re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Going back to my love of vintage American comedies, Married with Children has been an excellent watch (only now catching up on the episodes).. LOVE it, it is comedy before the days of extreme political correctness which we are all forced to be now thanks to the ever watchful cyber Gestapo. Its filled with misogyny, sexism, chauvinism and insensitive comedy.. makes for a great watch and is on par with the other legends of comedy shows like Seinfeld and Curb, if not better, for that era. Ed O'Neill as Al Bundy is a performer.. never knew he had that comic timing and skill from looking at his almost lazy performance in Modern Family.

On the same topic, Big Bang Theory's final season is the next one (thank god), and while it certainly was off-beat in its portrayal of the life of the nerds, it simply dragged on way too long just like 2 and A Half Men did. Certainly is the number one show in India, all the people I know love it but I never did, the initial seasons had some magic in them but the novelty wore off by season 5/6.

In a way though, BBT and Modern Family are the last of a nearly extinct genre of "watchable with friends and family" shows, though not comedies. End of an era of mid/late 2000's shows I guess.

The P.C parade has a lot of axe to grind with even a harmless show like BBT :

Quote:
Throughout the show, it’s also considered “adorkable” when the men neglect to help out with domestic chores, demanding the women on the show do cleaning, cooking, and other stereotypically “female” jobs – much to the joy and hilarity of the laughing live audience.
LOL. I think Jerry Seinfeld says it best when he said it last week :

Quote:
Seinfeld claimed he has never apologized for a joke. “No. Jokes are not real. People assume that when you say something that you believe it. It’s purely comedic invention. You know, I do this whole bit about Pop-Tarts and how much I love them. I don’t love Pop-Tarts. It’s just funny. It’s funny to say it, so I say it.”

Try Ghoul. It's on Netflix.
Haven't seen it myself yet but getting good reviews. It's good to see Indian television scene is changing with these short too the point series coming out with different concepts.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan.
Rating: 4/5

Being a fan of Tom Clancy & Jack Ryan, I waited for this show. Binged it and it was good.
A modern update on an iconic fictional character.

In my opinion, it is loosely premised on The Sum Of All Fears & Executive Order.
Will not go into the details - don't want to spoil your fun.

It is a great weekend watch and will not disappoint.
Thankfully the series has been renewed for another season.

Excellent point - I believe Russel Peters also said it on a radio show when they were discussing his methods (on joking about religion, race, etc).

Episode 5 is the best of the series.
James Greer is younger than what he is portrayed in the books.
Excellent casting of Wendell Pierce in that role.
John Krasinski also seems to have buffed up for his role of Jack Ryan.
Kudos for casting good actors in the roles of the main villan (Mousa Bin Suleiman), his brother (Ali), his wife (Hanin Ali) & Cathy Mueller.

I am hoping a John Clark & Ding Chavez Rainbow Six series is in the offing.

Yehi Meri Family

This is a famliy show about a typical middle class family in the 90s - working dad, housewife and three kids. It is a very well directed, acted and scripted show of 7 crisp episodes. Mona Singh (Jassi) is the only known face. Do watch it with family, you'll sport a smile throughout.

My rating = 4 stars.

It's a TVF show.

'The Killing' is different from 'The Forest', although I guess the basic premise sounds the same. The story is completely different.

One more similar series that I liked is Zone Blanche/ Black Spot on Amazon Prime. I'm eagerly waiting for Season 2 of this series.
