Thanks for the suggestion, Sir. I watched Amazon Prime's Tom Clancy's Jack Rayn series, I liked it. It seems Tom Clancy's novels will be an amazing read.

Tom Clancy is one of those who popularized the techno-thriller genre of books. His early works are a great read, but his later ones, not so much. That said, that early success is what popularized his name as a brand, as well as other brands like "Jack Ryan", "Op Center", "Rainbow".

If you're interested in reading his works, then take a look at what I put in his RIP thread:

  • It doesn't glorify war or war machines or even make it seem cool

In the Jack Ryan universe, you could read:
  • The Hunt for Red October - classic stuff, and his first book
  • Without Remorse - gripping and touching, with a strong human element in it
  • The Sum of All Fears - for the bits about nuclear weapon construction which form a pretty significant portion of the book. Sort of like Forsyth's Fourth Protocol

Books I'd recommend avoiding: (snip)

re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

I recently started watching "The night manager" on Amazon Prime. It seems to have gotten rave reviews in IMDB (8.2) and from the first three episodes I have seen, it seems to be building up quite well.
Anyone else watching it?

Fabulous series from beginning till end. The story is gripping and pacing is spot on.

Thanks for the pointer. A British mini-series, with Hugh Laurie as the "baddie"? I'm sold!

Done with Looming Tower in two days. Loved it. I hope there is a season 2 of it that ends with the elimination of the head of the Al-Qaeda.

Now back to Elementary S6. Done with 4-5 episodes, but now its time to binge 2-4 episodes a day.

PS: Blacklist latest season : after watching the first couple of episode, could not get myself to finish the season. Even though I am a big James Spader fan, i hope this one is not revived for one more season.

Ditto. I got tired of The Blacklist around S2/S3 itself, it became quite monotonous.

One standard plot point I noticed is that if the good guys get intel that the bad guys are someplace, and go with a full SWAT team, the bad guys won't be there, the place would be abandoned. On the other hand, just a single person (e.g. the female protagonist) or a small number of people going in means there'll be a full squad of the bad guys, with a big firefight erupting.

This trope repeated itself with such regularity that it became predictable, and inevitably boring. Notwithstanding the fact that the good guys seem to lurch from one desperate situation to another.

I enjoyed the premise of the show, and the first season.

re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Here are the recent ones I watched :

Jack Ryan (Prime)
Broadchurch (Netflix)
Ozark (Netflix)
Mindhunter (Netflix)
The Forest (Netflix)
The Fall (Netflix)

Jack Ryan, Broadchurch and Mindhunter tops my list as the best ones. Binge watched all of them.

Just finished watching 'The Fall'. It started off well with a gripping story, but became predictable in its last season.

Just started watching Dark with subtitles. For a bit I switched to English Audio and it sounded funny, went back to watching with subtitles.

Bodyguard is scheduled to premier on Indian Netflix on 24th Oct.

For Amazon Prime subscribers, I would recommend - Life.
A 10 year old series where Damien Lewis plays a detective.
It ran for two seasons and both are available on Prime.

Life

Thanks for the recommendation. I first saw Damian Lewis in Band of Brothers ages ago, and he portrayed the Army captain brilliantly. Since then, he's also impressed in Dreamcatcher, as well as Homeland.

I happened to catch one of the later episodes (S6 or S7) when channel surfing, and was amused to see that all of a sudden Carrie's busy saving the entire US government, or something similar. A far cry from the engaging storyline of S1.

So many shows are killed by their creators' attempts to milk them as far as possible, leading to unnecessarily complicated plots that are a far cry from the taut plots of S1 that attracted viewers in the first place - Lost being a classic example.

Recently finished watching Haunting of the Hill House on Netflix. It is one of those rare well made horror series. Very few jump scares but a lot of creepy moments. Everyone has acted very well.

How could I forget Ozark.

Loved the twists and turns in every episode. Screenplay is so crisp and fast paced, there was hardly a moment I got bored. I remember, I had to rewind some scenes a few seconds as I couldn't catch up with its pace sometimes. End is a bit sedate, but a good one though, it couldn't have ended in a better way. Bang on the money.

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina. (Netflix)

Fans of Archie comics - I am assuming there are a few here - have read the adventures of Sabrina in the comics.
The series dropped on 26th Oct.
Have seen the first episode and hope to binge it this weekend.
I know it is teenage fare but we are all teenagers at heart.
