re: The IPL Thread (Fantasy game league details on pg 238)

A Match worthy of a final!

MI kept dropping catches & that allowed CSK to get close. Apart from Dhoni's runout it was also Watson's needless runout which proved to be the turning point in the end.

Nita Ambani's prayers worked, now she should get onto her private jet & spend the months of June & July in England praying for the Indian Team.

re: The IPL Thread (Fantasy game league details on pg 238)

So disappointed with CSK losing it, but MI were the worthy winners. That run-out of Watson cost CSK the match eventually. He should have stayed in and trusted Jadeja to hit one out of the park.
On the MSD runout, the eventual angle (from the front) is an illusion, the side on is what the umpire should have decided on. There was enough doubt for it to be ruled not out, but there is no point of arguing now. To lose by 1 run is just so shattering.
Also, wondered why was Shardul Thakur sent ahead of Chahar and Harbhajan, both are better strikers of the ball? No one checked if that lbw was a no-ball or not?

No point checking for the lbw or no ball as the umpire had given it out and CSK did not have any reviews left.

There is no reason or rule that the umpire must decide a run out based more on the side view than other angle. Wherever there is no clarity or confusion, any other angle where there is clarity takes precedence. I'd say the side view was an illusion and it was clear from the front angle that there was nothing behind the line. This is the same reason why during an LBW or edge review 2 different angles are seen. Whichever angle is clear, takes precedence and decides if there was an nick or not.

The bat was something like in the below picture. but the bat was turned toward the side camera. Hence in the side view it appeared much more ambiguous. The front view clarifiedthe ambiguity.

He was mentioning only the no-ball I think especially since it was Malinga. The previous time it was missed by the umpire in the league stage and it potentially cost RCB a spot in the playoffs.

IPL is scheduled to happen in 3 weeks. With Corona virus scare and major events getting cancelled all over the world. Will it affect IPL as lot of air travel and international travel is also involved in the IPL? What are your thoughts?

Yup, definite threat of cancellation. Lots of cost cutting moves also announced today - prize money reduced by half, stadium fees increased, no business class travel etc.

Maharashtra & Karnataka Govt have asked clarification from BCCI & Central Govt on Coronavirus threat. One option proposed is a closed-door match without spectators.
The first match is on March 29 in Mumbai, between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

Wont be a loss to bcci as they will get their money from television rights. Franchise will incur loss due to no ticket sales but they can be compensated by bcci. Only if greedy bcci agrees to this.

They should definitely not allow spectators inside the stadium. Everything else is upon BCCI on whether they want to play or not.

Ganguly said IPL will go on. He should think more on this. I think we need to take harsh precautions since we are not equipped to deal with a major outbreak.

IMHO matches without spectators is meaningless. Formula 1 is a different scenario as audience is really low in comparison and most people prefer watching on television. But cricket matches without spectators and their cheering is simply a dull aware. I will prefer IPL being cancelled than playing without spectators.

The IPL is a soft target and is the bane of every problem in the country

- Cauvery water issue. Ban IPL
- Water problem in Maharashtra. Ban IPL
- GDP down. Ban IPL.

Soft target and IPL! I don't agree. It's one of the bighest annual events in the country and everything about it is grand! And everytime a reschedule of dates or location was demanded and never a ban. I don't think any of the issues were trivial.

Kaveri water issue was a security issue. Threat to player's safety. Nobody called for a ban on IPL at that time but to postpone. Matches in Chennai were hence shifted out of Chennai

And two other years when general elections were held, IPL was shifted out of the country

Water problem in Maharashtra...although the water consumption for a ground maybe a small percentage, when there is a drought situation, when water is scarce for basic needs, using water for entertainment is a waste...how much ever small it is

And now this Coronavirus. Although the mortality rate of it is not huge, although it is hyped up a bit, there is no getting away from the fact that no vaccine or cure is found yet. India as a country is ill prepared to handle a big outbreak like this. The least we could do is stop gathering in lakhs and spread it further. Since this year the problem is worldwide, no shifting out of the country is possible too. With Chinese Grandprix, Geneva Motor show and other such events are cancelled in better prepared countries are cancelled. I see a good case for not playing IPL this year

Foreign Players Unavailable for IPL 2020 Till April 15 Due to Coronavirus-related Visa Restrictions.

Quote:
The foreign players who play in the IPL come under the Business Visa category. As per the government's directive, they can't come till April 15
The fate of the IPL itself will be decided on March 14 at the event's Governing Council meeting in Mumbai.

Time to understand the risks at hand and look at it from a serious standpoint.

All it will require is one infected person to attend the ground in person to escalate it. Doesn't apply only to IPL, but every event that has huge amount of crowds.

This is the case for every country that has Corona cases detected. Football, F1, NBA, and so many other sport events are being banned, or conducted behind closed doors.

That is definitely one of the options for IPL, however the visa blockage is a big constraint. Plus the players themselves might be unenthusiastic to attend these matches due to the risks they will be taking up.

So let's wait for the verdict - I hope they take a judicious decision; and if a postponement or cancellation of the whole IPL is on the cards, so be it!
