Noopster, You are very right but my life and it's terrible phases made me fall into this ditch. I never was a smoker but in May 2010 an incident happened in my life which totally shattered me and to regain myself for the sake of my career I had to hide my emotions and did not express my grief. Thus, fell into smoking and for sure once I get the much-needed support and love I will quit it.

my friend, you are an addict and that's pretty much all there is to it.
You know mate, No one falls for a bad habit for his/her happiness and own will. Life, circumstances and at times lack of much needed support makes one fall for it. I am an alive example of this. But, The day love and affection re-visits my life the smoking shall die.

What you need to understand my friend is that even if you do quit, the damage that's done is irreversible. You should quit now all the more if you know there is a loved one with whom you wish to grow old.

Harming yourself isn't the solution, irrespective of whether there is someone out there who cares for you or not.

Instead use the money that you spend in smoking to make yourself fit. With the money you spend in smoking, you would be able to join a reputed gym with a personal trainer!!

Re: Help smoking Team-BHP members quit smoking

I have been smoking since I was 17, I just turned 28 some days back. It has always been 1 ciggi a day for these past 11 years. I don't know if that causes any damage at all, but I want to quit this 1 ciggi a day too. I have gone a month without having any until an urge has kicked up and I was back to having 1 a day. The problem is, the number is so small ( just 1) that I always manage to convince myself that "isse kya hoga, chalo peete hai'.

Is nicotine gum worth a solution for stopping this 1 a day craving ?

I agree with you brother on this. To keep my partner happy and myself fit; I should quit it. But, to be very honest this habit cant be given-up in a night and frankly I do not have the will-power like my Paa. However, gradually I will work on it and will end it up in near future.

My friend, I may not have the right to suggest you as we both are in the same boat. All I can say is whether one consumes a spoon of poison or a bottle of poison, the result shall be the same.

I got it dude. I hope everything resolves back soon. Remember the ending of the movie?

BTW, I am glad that I am a non-smoker. More so, because being dependent on something that is killing you slowly is bad. I have seen my friends feeling miserable when they don't smoke for a while, say after lunch or dinner. It is like being dependent on some thing...something which is really bad for you.
Not that I have never lit the candle in my life. Used to have it occasionally, but then I realized that why to dig myself into such a habit which is bad for health and can make lives miserable.

Dear fine69 & ad3952n and all those who are lighting the candle so as to cope with some personal loss, I would like to tell you that during the age of 26-29, I went through a lot of hardships in life...losing all one could literally lose leaving me devastated...felt that all is over for me. But one day I realized that it is only one life we have and whatever we got to do, dream is during this lifetime. There will never be a 'next time'.
We got to challenge life...extract all the happiness it tried to deprive from us, hence DO THAT instead, rather than gifting your own health (& life) to the fate. We should realize this fact before it is too late. The value of good health and life can only be realized when you have lost it. Don't do it guys.

Regards,
Saket

Sorry to hear of bad events in your life, but that has nothing to do with giving up smoking now.

All you are doing is shifting the responsibility to someone else by depending on support from them. Sorry, but you have to do this by yourself, even if you are in the best relationship in the world.

Of course they do! Almost all smokers started continued smoking, at the beginning, because we enjoyed it.

No, they do not. And they do not make you continue; addiction does that.

No, you are a living example of someone who won't take responsibility for your own tobacco addiction.

And what is the first thing you are going to inflict on your love? Being hard to live with while you give up smoking! It's not a good way to start!

This is all tough stuff, but if you are even slightly interested in giving up smoking it is stuff you have to come to terms with.

It is your choice. Nobody is trying to make you give up.

Sorry if you don't like this reality check, but hey, I used to be an addict too.

The vile nicotine takes many forms to trap you in its cancerous smoke.
Convincing you that its helping you tide over bad stuff is one of the most commons ones.

The day you realize this, you have quit forever.

Successfully completed 3 months and more without a single drag of regular ciggie. Even dependency on vapor has gone down drastically. Best 4k invested ever in my life!

87 days and counting! Absolutely no craving and no withdrawal symptoms of any sort.

- The sense of taste has improved and this was a perceivable difference! Food tastes a whole lot better now.

- The lip color has improved. It used to be brownish before but is now regaining the natural color. Gently scrubbing using the tooth brush after brushing helped.

- Saved almost Rs. 2000 a month. But all the savings now translate to fuel expenses and phone top-ups.

- Feel mighty proud that I gave up on an addiction! And the reactions from some of the friends are priceless! The other day, a friend who was pursuing his Masters abroad had come down to Surat to meet some of us (he is an ex-colleague) and was pleasantly shocked to hear that I quit. We had stopped at the pan shop after the meal.

- The smell of tobacco never caused a relapse. Never felt the need to grab one.

Re: Help smoking Team-BHP members quit smoking

Dear members,
This is a piece of advice from me who has not smoked at all till date. (Of course i have been forced to inhale the toxic exhausts coming out of vehicles resulting in bout of cold).
I have seen many of my friends who are chain smokers. I have seen their hands tremble when they hold a glass of water. My ex boss smoked at least 8 cigarettes/day mostly related to office tension. After smoking i would maintain sufficient distance while talking since the stench was unbearable. I don't think he has stopped smoking. Infact his son advised him to do but in vain
What is the end result one derives from smoking? May be the smokers can throw more light on this. In this era where new diseases are making news, money spent on smoking can be invested on natural products like tender coconut, butter milk...
There is no point in earning money by burning midnight oil and getting addicted to smoking in due course and then spending all the hard earned money on restoring your health.
Say no to smoking.

Mate, Reality and Truth are always bitter to digest but you are very right. I shall prepare myself to quit this habit very soon.

Re: Help smoking Team-BHP members quit smoking

@ad3952n, thad_ginathom is correct. The choice of starting to smoke and enjoy it is yours and stopping smoke is also upon you.

When I quit, a lot of close friends even taunted that I will not be able to make it stick. I did follow through and most of the people in my close friend circle have now quit. Even on a trip, or on binge drinking none of us smoke. You just need the power to follow through and to make a decision to not to smoke ever again. It your decision and yours alone. No one is forcing you to smoke.

Reading and posting here is the first step that you have taken and you have already decided that you need to stop one day. Make that day soon, can you stop this habit over this weekend?

Mate, I really respect your concern. I cant promise you 100% that this habit shall end by this weekend but after getting honest feedbacks from my tbhp friends I do promise to avoid smoking every hour from now on and gradually give it all up.

On a lighter note; You all made me remember the famous dialogues from the movie Devdas of Dilip Sahab and Shah Rukh Sir.

Thanks

Why do you need an alternate or anything at all?

Are YOU so weak that without a crutch you cannot handle your own life.

Think about this. I am not trying to insult you. I am simply asking you to acknowledge the huge amount of power you already have within you.

Dear BB, Agree with you. But, Are there any side-effects if I quit it at one go itself? I mean can one get headaches and initially how to control the urge?
