The alternative, as you said, is to use google -- however we've made that easier by integrating Google Custom Search on our site itself. Perhaps you have not seen it if you are using one of the older skins?

Rehaan, not quite sure if the google custom search in the site is as effective as searching from google. For instance,

a. If I type in 'Samsung b2100' in the google custom search box in T-BHP website, there are no results

b. If I type in 'Samsung b2100 team-bhp' in google, the second search result is the mobile phone thread.

Great if you could ramp it up a bit - In case I type in search terms in google and browse to T-BHP, I need to login again - quite a pain.

Thanks for pointing this out. Interesting. Will look into it.

(FYI, the way to search a specific site on google is -
Samsung b2100 site:team-bhp.com )

Folks - Is there a section which lists review of automotive workshops by city? I tried searching and I could find fragments within threads but nothing dedicated. If there is one, can someone please send me the link

Else, I am thinking it would be a worthwhile to have a subforum "Workshops" under the Team-BHP Reviews section. I think it is will be useful for many a car owners to get their cars fixed.

Personally, I go to authorised service centers for 85% of my needs but do visit the occasional workshop around my area as well.

Perhaps also develop a stricter title so searching is easier e.g.
<City> - <Area> - <Workshop Name>

What do BHPians think?

Hi aarenes,

We do have a couple of city specific threads

Good paint Job in Bangalore

Detailing job in Mumbai

Tuner Directory

There are over 20 such threads available for Mumbai.

Go to Search > Enter 'Mumbai' in search test box > Select 'Search Titles Only' > Select 'Modification & Accessories section' > Click 'Search Now'

It would be nice if we had a chat room on here. I know all of us are on gtalk/msn/yahoo etc, but still a chat room would be nice.

Cheers

@ Vdiatech : The chat suggestion has been brought up several times earlier. We have absolutely no plans to incorporate the same. Reasons:

1. Information exchanged on the forum - via threads & posts - stays archived. Thus, that way, it can help plenty more enthusiasts over time and keeps enriching our knowledge base.

2. Chat is a server intensive function.

3. It is near impossible to moderate chat exchanges, or maintain the quality that Team-BHP has become known for.

IRC daemons can be run off moderately powerful single/dual-core servers, no need for 4/8/16 core monsters. I run multiple servers and managing them is less intensive than managing a proper big website. And moderating IRC chatrooms is quite similar to the forums. For example, setting a specific mode (+m) to the chatroom will only allow voiced and above people to talk, pretty much what happens here. There's lots more.

As for archiving the stuff, how much of the chat will actually be technical stuff? I'd wager that people would still prefer to talk about technical stuff here, and offtopic stuff in the chatroom.

I do know that something like this will not be coming up anytime soon, just wanted to clear a few things.

Chats can be archived too. If the necessary permissions are given, members can look back at all the chat history.

From my personal experience on some international and Indian forums with the chat feature, mostly all the discussions are non-technical. They just help to bind the members better.

Anyways, we know this won't be implemented at any point of time on TBHP. But just clearing some of the doubts here.

Was searching for car covers and came across this link via google:

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/modifi...car-cover.html

However,i can't access it and i get the below message.

I still stress the need to upgrade the inbuilt search feature. I normally have to search team-bhp via google.

Thanks for the feedback. Sure, there are different ways of looking at it and possible solutions for the problems outlined, however, as a whole, i think we are all agreed on the outcome here.

Tejas,

That thread has only recently been moved off the public forum (hence your error). It might be back soon.

Other than the 3-character word limit, and the need to be exact/literal (unlike on google) i think the vbulletin search has evolved to be quite good! Try using the "Advanced search" page, search in specific sections only, and also try in titles only. That helps a lot.

Mods
I think that the Search functionality can be enhanced. I dont know if the service provider(s) we use provides us this capabilities.

Couple of recommendations could be
- Time stamp (limit to thread updated in last week/ last 6 months etc....)
- Throwing the search results based on some criteria (name, date, no of replies etc..)
- Filtering criteria the search results (ex limit to certain forums)

I hope I am able to convey the requirements as an end-user.

This exists!

This exists to the extent that you can find threads with atleast / at-most X replies.

This exists too! And with full flexibility (search within multiple forums, include child-forums etc)

Do take a look at this thread :
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/announ...p-members.html

And at our Advanced Search page where you will find these options :
Team-BHP - Search Forums

Don't get me wrong, there is room for improvement with our current search (as with everything!), but its just that most of your suggestions are already existing functions.
