Theme #5 : Black and White

Time now to start the new theme.
The current Theme is
Black and white, and of course SEPIA
Theme will run starting now(16th November) to 30th November.

Now the question arises, why B&W, when our eyes can see color.
Well the answer is dramatization of the whole scene.
B&W allows you to pull up those contrast and curves sliders, and create very dramatic scenes.

Some examples below

The above scenes made okay color shots, but with B&W, the shot gets a new meaning. As most of you would have guessed, though the shots are mine, the PP is not. Its done by the master himself

Now coming to the other side of B&W. IR Photography. When you shoot IR, you get shots so dramatic, that the effects cannot be duplicated in any PP software.

Procedure is simple, shoot a shot in RAW, fix WB, and desaturate.

Many photographers use RED filter to mimic the effect, but with IR, the results are very very different.
Downsides are need for tripod even in bright sunlight as the exposure times needed are often 2-3 seconds. The reason for this is that cameras come in with IR cut filter in the front of the sensor, and when you use a lens filter which is IR pass, very little light can pass through.

Example shot

So people, lets see your desaturated shots!

Hey Tanveer, nice shots and the B&W processing have all the signatures of the Master, so you've got a lesson or two from him recently?

Riju, liked the 2nd shot of the lot. Has nice action going there.

Here is one from my side, I'm not good at B&W processing and hence don't have many B&W shots :-(
It's an early morning of a very foggy day at my natives, kinda liked the mood that it creates and kind of reminds me of my home.

If the tree had been off center, it would have made a better shot.
And you don't really need RAW processing, just adjusting contrast and curves does the trip.
As for my shots, I did not get a lesson ., he himself worked on them!

Generally, pics with deep DOFs are best candidates for BW conversion. Exception are possible, with the right composition.

Looks like a scene from the movie Sin City. In this B7W theme I think we can expect to see lots of shots that would fit in that movie.

PS: How about having some parts of the B&W having some color in just 1 part for that dramatic effect?

I did had a different idea to make a landscape composition but there was no space for me to go back as there was a ditch :-( So I thought, let's make a lemonade and go for a vertical compo to have the fence and the bare tree
