re: Are KFC / Cafe Day / Pizza Hut hygienic anymore?

We go to these fancy joints for their fancy foods and are willing to pay fancy prices. One thing we do forget is that the people working in these MNC chains are the same as the guys in our own cheap Indian eateries except they wear pants and T-shirts and caps while the rest wear their own clothes and look a little less hygenic. Pay wise, I know there is no difference at all. You can hire a young college/ school dropout with broken english for 1/2 the salary of a 30-45 year old man. Also you throw in the 'Free' T-shirt,cap and pants, they come flocking. It also goes without saying they will not stay there for long, but the supply is good, so no problems for KFC or McD there.

Gansan sir, please guide me to this place for a 200 buck pizza in chennai. It is hard to get anything less than 500 there and that is not enough for two too.

+1 to that.
But at the same time, I feel that sometimes the crowd also becomes too large to manage and that affects the quality.
Similarly, as mentioned in your post the high rate of employee attrition also affects the overall quality as they have to keep on training freshers after freshers which don't stay for long.
OT
This applies on auto-manufacturers, servicing and other businesses too.

Regular size double cheese margherirtha pizza with cheese burst topping at any Dominos joint costs Rs 200.00 each approx. Rs 400.00 for two, naturally, not including other items!

My son had the same pizza at Dominos, Ooty last Wednesday (6th June) for dinner and was struck by very severe vomiting and loose stools from mid night. We were holding a return train ticket from CBE and had to vacate in the morning. Had to take him to a hospital early in the morning for a shot and medicines. Made him wear adult diapers and proceeded on our way. We won't be going anywhere near Dominos in the foreseeable future.

After returning, learned from a colleague that his son also had the same problem at Ooty last year, after eating the very same pizza from the very same joint.

re: Are KFC / Cafe Day / Pizza Hut hygienic anymore?

Although my complaint does not fall under this category. This is more to do with their over-charging tactics and malpractices in their business model and sales pitch. Could not find a more relevant thread, so posting here.
This is the email content which I had sent to CCD customer care. Pasting it as is, for your understanding and action (if you agree).

Hi,

I want to report about a very notorious practice exercised by the Cafe Coffee Day outlet at Sandy Square, Jaydev Vihar, XIMB Square, Bhubaneswar - 751003, Orissa, India.
Let me furnish our bill details at first.

Bill No.: 4872
Date/Time: 07/07/2012 17:03:19
Order No.: 19

1. Kaapi Nirvana + Chocolate Ice-cream + Vanilla Ice-cream + Chocolate syrup -- INR 200
2. Cappucinno -- INR 58

Total amount with taxes -- INR 293

TIN No.: 21071104596
C.S.T No.: BHC-3-5094

Incident detail:
Along with my wife, walked into this CCD outlet and ordered for a regular cappucinno and kaapi nirvana. I was asked whether Ice-cream needs to be added or not. I said, yes.
Next, when I heard the bill amount, it was INR 293. More than what it should have been for kaapi nirvana @ INR 114 + Ice-cream scoop @ INR 30 ~ INR 144!

Thus I wanted to see the bill before signing the card transaction printout. What I found was that we have been billed for INR 200 for the kaapi nirvana alone, which included additives as vanilla ice-cream + chocolate ice-cream + chocolate syrup!!
I asked for an explanation. I was told that adding Ice-cream means adding all three together.
This, not being my first time at a CCD, asked him whether they do this across all CCD's or not. I was told, no, this is a practice that only they follow!

Amusing answer, to say the least. I gave them a piece of my mind about this over-charging and mis-information. The manager wanted to waive off the extra charges, however I did not budge and wanted to pursue this matter further.

My family, friends and acquaintances have been customers of CCD for quite some time!
After hearing my ordeal, they are very negative about your brand. I have been to CCD across Bangalore, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and few domestic airports.
I understand that your quality has degraded along the years, but this mal-practice is just too much to handle.

I will use social networking to the fullest, to ensure this incident reaches many eyes and minds.

And as a personal pledge, I will never ever walk into a CCD outlet. Barista does better comparatively better now, anyways!

Hope you guys focus less on fleecing customers and more on delivering the goods!

Regards,
Supratik Debnath

re: Are KFC / Cafe Day / Pizza Hut hygienic anymore?

^^ This issue happened with me too. My friend ordered a coffee. Then the waiter asked if you would like to add cream etc etc. It seems she had asked only for fresh cream and this chap added whatever he could find in the kitchen and gave us a bill of Rs. 450 for two drinks. When asked, most of the additives were charged exorbitantly and I dont remember how much as this happened two years ago. As this happened in my native, I was able to bully the manager and gave him a lesson for playing such tricks. At last the bill came down to somewhere around Rs 250. Thats not cheap too, but at least that was what we saw in the menu(without taxes). Really a ripoff from CCD. Even on highways we are required to pay Rs. 60 for a normal cup of coffee. The only reason we ever feel like driving into a CCD is due to well kept interiors and washrooms. At least due to that we do not hesitate to pay the heavy bill.

Yes. I believe everyone is fine with paying according to the rate chart. Over charging without informing is not to be tolerated at all. They are expensive, but it is our choice whether to visit them or not.
But they should not charge me for something I had not asked for.

re: Are KFC / Cafe Day / Pizza Hut hygienic anymore?

This is a usual trick followed by all these outlets. For example, if you ask for a cool drink, they ask you "medium or large" without mentioning "regular" at all. All of us should be alert when visiting such places.

However, the Title of the thread doesn't convey the message properly.
It could have been something like: "Bad Business Practices by Cafe Coffee Day."

Agree with most here, hygiene and neatness are no longer strong points of these normal restaurants and cafes.
In CCd's with open kitchens you can actually see the brewing guy making coffee one instant, talking to someone the other, going out etc. Yes, he's wearing gloves an all but still, there is a proper code.
Many CCD's these aren't even clean and you have flies everywhere. Absolutely disgusting.

Overcharging and wrong booking is very common almost everywhere; and most people do not even check their bills; ignorant fools in my opinion.

I only go to a few select cafes and restaurants which I 'think' are clean and don;t try to con me, atleast not till now.

Re: Are KFC / Cafe Day / Pizza Hut hygienic anymore?

No experience with CCD, since I hardly visit them. When I first learnt about CCD in 2004, I was shocked to hear the price of a cup of coffee and almost fell off my chair. I was wondering if I was utterly poor and felt that the prices were exorbitant or others around me were filthy rich to be able to afford a cup of coffee for Rs. 50 or more while I was satisfied with a cup of filter coffee for Rs. 5 or 6.

However, I do have quite a bit of experience with McD, KFC and Dominos.
I can say it all depends on the center and the 'monkey in the house'.
There is a Dominos in Baga, Goa (close to the beach). The place is small, but the pizza was awesome. I have tried Dominos elsewhere, and the taste has been poor to average.
Never had a bad experience though.
Last weekend, in Pune:
Two pizzas (medium size, thin crust) + Pasta Italiano cost Rs. 420 after discount [we have purchased discount coupon sheet with us (paid Rs. 500 for the same).]
Pizza cost Rs. 255, thin crust Rs 25, taxes extra.
Pasta cost Rs. 105 (approx.), taxes extra.
So, with discount coupons, it is no longer insanely expensive.

What I like about McD is that all prices are inclusive of taxes, whereas with KFC, taxes are extra.
I have never had negative experiences with them so far.
Once with KFC at Pulse mall, I ordered a couple of items. One of them was some cone ice-cream. They had some machine problem and kept me waiting. I complained and they said, we are having a machine problem. I said, no problem, give me the money back. They said, we cannot do that. I was shocked.
I told them firmly, if you cannot give service, then you should refund.
They then gave me the refund, somehow the machine also started working and they gave me the ice-cream free and apologized.

It would help if people can list the unhygienic places though for a quick reference.

Sadly I do not have a translated version but I can outline the content for you:

"Civil Surgeon Ludhiana initiated an enquiry on News agency Jagbani's report. On inspection rotten vegetables were found with insects on them. A baby snake was found in one of the Burgers served at KFC Ludhiana".

*Disclaimer* This is what I could gather from the written & video content. It may not be the correct interpretation, please co-relate.

My personal experience with CCD has been poor. Food items are not fresh & proper hygiene is not maintained.

Re: Are KFC / Cafe Day / Pizza Hut hygienic anymore?

My last week's experience at KFC, Brigade Road, Bangalore.

We were 3 and ordered 3 mango burst crushers. When they were presented, it was evident that they wouldn't taste good.
They were more white than yellow.

I told the boy across the counter of my apprehensions and he egged me to go with it.

Upon tasting, it was bland, sugary and very bad to say the least. I told him and he promptly agreed to repair them. He went to the machine and I actually saw him putting a lot of mango pulp into the glasses and whipping them.
A genuine effort.

The result was, however, still negative. I told him that I was still not satisfied upon which he brought his manager who then remade them with the best of his ability.

The taste was still bad, so I suspect the mango concentrate to be of a dubious quality.

But the manager, in turn made us 3 strawberry crushers (with our consent) FOC and refunded the money we had paid for the mango crushers.

I was happy with the service.

Re: Are KFC / Cafe Day / Pizza Hut hygienic anymore?

I dont know if it has been posted earlier. But "Reputed" hotel in B'lore were raided recently for serving rotten chicken, stale food and unhygenic kitchen.

The culprits - Nandhini Deluxe Hotel (Gandhinagar), Imperial Hotel, Empire (both in Vasanthanagar) and Chung’s Chinese Corner (Cunningham Road).

Apparently, the places were sealed for three months but they opened for business in two days.
