When an Omni overtakes me on the expressways, I slow down completely and let him pass.

Are NA Sudipto Da. Actually me and my brother-in-law was driving each other's cars alternatively. After driving the Wagon-R at such a speed I thought of pushing the Omni to its' limit. But its started to vibrate so much at 100+ that I didn't dare to drive it for long at that speed. May be a couple of minutes. But do you think even driving a Wagon-R at 140 Km/hr. at the Durgapur Highway stretch is not safe either. The car nicely coupes up to the speed though. Though I don't see doing it again in future as it consumes much fuel and reduces the overall average on long drive.

I am not too sure about the Wagon R tyres. Please check the tyres for their speed rating. Here is a link that explains the various things written on the sidewall of a tyre

i have recently done 180+ in my palio 1.6 S10, Handling was great, but i was running it with stock tyres, and stock mags, which are not perfect, they dont have proper wheel balance, so it started rattling, so i had to stop....

but there wasnt any car racing with me......

Now dont curse me.. its the stock VXi (motorcycle) size tyres. I did not even bother to look at the tire wall for the size.

I think those are 175/65 R13s right?

Looking at getting 14 inch alloys (I wish R15s but not advisable I hear) and 195/60 tires however that might take about 5-6 months. I dont want them too wide and lose out on performance and FE. with these stock tires itself I have not found wanting for grip.

Remember I used to drive a 95 esteem with almost bald tires.

Are you saying hitting 180 on these stock tires are not advisable?

Please keep that 180 mark away for safety reasons till you get a tyre upgrade mate.
15 inchers you can and I have 2 frends who run the car on 15 inchers with no problem's.

Check the tyre speed rating

The letter `S', if it is written on your tyre means they are rated for a maximum speed of 180 kmph. It may not be a good idea to test the maximum limit. At high speeds tyres generate a lot of heat. The rubber has a maximum capacity to hold steady in that heat. Beyond that, it will burst. However, speed ratings are given assuming the vehicle is fully loaded upto the tyre's capacity. So if you are driving lighter than that, then your tyre might hold good even beyond that rating.

I am not questioning your ability to drive at that speed - on a good empty road with a good car I am sure you can do it - but the tyre's ability to handle that heat might be suspect.

As noted by Sudipto, if your tyres are S-rated, it is not advisable to go as high as 180 kmph; you should get at least H-rated tyres, which will also give you good grip.

If your stock tyres are tubetype, a puncture or tube failure at those speeds could make your car uncontrollable due to sudden loss of pressure; tubeless tyres are preferable. In any case make sure your tyre presssures are at or above the recommended level before hitting such speeds; tyre bursts often occur due to keeping low tyre pressures.

You guys have just sold the idea for me to upgrade.. Arrggh I hate to admit that you guys are right in a way. Even though these bridgestones have got good thread and they are meant for baleno's manufacture est top speed of 175. (am to lazy to go and see the speed rating now )

With the filter and with some wind behind me I was hoping to squeeze an additional 5kmph and touch 180 on the same road Binz was referring to.. however maybe little safer with tubeless. yes these are tubed tires.

That 5-speed 800 rocks! Only Indian car I have seen where the speedo needle extends beyond the speedo's top speed marking.

No idea moral.. Could be even 10-15 but the thing is really old. The engine is supposed to be a merc sourced or designed engine or something. Its a UK national's Trax which we borrow at times so not sure of year of manufature .
