Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Hi
Yesterday a kid lost a life because his neck got cut by the thread that is used to fly kites (Manja) in egmore. I was driving my splendor with my daughter in front of me yesterday and while i was driving over the royapettah brigde i could see a few kids flying kites on the terrace. Though flying kites are illegal in chennai as usual nobody is bothered. Be forewarned. Helmets can save only so much.

Saw this in newspaper today morning.Scary and unfortunate.
it looks like some scene from final destination movie.

No matter what you do to safergaurd yourself,still freak accidents like this do happen.

@rock18: Not at all. But I wanted to make sure that my sister is safe. Can't take chances, as she'll be staying in the same hostel for a few weeks more. I see a lot of drunkards and maniac autos and bikes racing on those narrow streets, that's why I didn't let her go to her hostel alone.

@drrajasaravanan: Unfortunate, to say the least. Being paranoid about safety is the only way to reduce the number of such freak accidents.

The obligation is with insurance. Atleast thats what I understand.

Your insurer has a contractual obligation to reimburse you (subject to their ridiculous deductions, which most customers in the rest of the world would not accept) for damage that you suffer. That's nothing to do with the responsibility of the person causing the damage.

I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen here, but the way the business works is that the insurance company pays you and recovers the cost from the person (or their insurance company) that caused the damage

Read the news in paper and was shocked. These type of accidents are becoming very common in Chennai recently. The only to stop this is, to designate special areas to fly kites. Like in the beach or playground and not near any roads.

And wearing helmet doesnt stop the thread to cut your neckline. Does the helmet protect that area.

And surprisingly the kiddos responsible were remanded in Jail, swift action by the police.

So will you be escorting her daily to her hostel?
If not buy her a pepper spray and ask her to be alert.
Just a preventive maintenance.
I had faced these kind of scenarios with my sister...most of the time i will not react to avoid unwanted troubles.

Today morning at the music academy signal a figo had stopped at the junction and a bike was lying on its side in front of the car. (I think) it was the figo owner who kept kicking and stomping this bike and then pushed and hit the bike rider.
Possibly this bike guy may have tried to cut in front of the car. A severe case of road rage on the part of the figo driver?

My Alto's rear bumper was banged by a biker with pillion yesterday on the Vandalur-Kelambakkam road, when I had to brake sharply for a sudden pothole. Pulled up to investigate - the LTD sticker is damaged, yellow paint from the sticker is smeared on to the black bumper. Bumper itself is not damaged. But when I pressed the area the bumper moved in a bit easily. Found upon inspection that a screw behind the bumper fastening it to the body had given way. Must get it fixed on the next visit to MSM.

Fortunately they did not fall down and pulled up to me. The rider was quite shaken and scolded me for rash driving and endangering his safety. I just smiled, called him an idiot and got in to the car to proceed on my way, as my wife and son were inside. We were on our way to Pondy to visit the Ashram and this soured the mood initially, so stopped at Mahabs for breakfast and coffee before continuing.

It was an isolated stretch of road, so no spectators who could side with the biker!

I was caught for over speeding in the old Mahabalipuram road (OMR)last week.
I was driving from Thuraipakkam to Tidel park.The police were standing with speed guns showing me I crossed the limit of 40kms/hr and was driving at 65kms /hr.
Purse was lighter by Rs.300.As I was in a hurry and AP registration so did not argue with the police.

They are, so far, not as clever at hiding themselves as are the London police --- but you still need to keep a sharp eye out for their van nearby, and the guy with the gun by the side of the road.

Sympathy ...and no lectures from me, as I wouldn't think I often pass Tidel Park at less than 40kph. Not many do. Even the old people on bicycles go faster than that!

^ I remember long back when I was caught speeding, I was told the same thing by the cop. Even cyclists can do 40kmph but rules are rules

The funny thing is they put a temporary board of 40 KMPH at SRP tools junction when they are on collection-duty. Else, the board goes missing. Noticed yesterday that the cops were there everywhere. Maybe they had spent a lot, the previous day in celebrating (they were missing in action on the road).
