Well these bikes don't breakdown that easily if one maintains them well.

Batteries should last a good 2 years if the bike is running at least once or twice a month. A nice highway blast will ensure proper charging and discharging of the battery. Running the bike for short distances and within city traffic conditions only will reduce the battery life since charge and discharge cycles might not reach optimum levels.

So don't worry much about the battery.

If at all the bike dies due to a bad battery, jump start the bike like jkdas has suggested. Never try starting the bike by pushing it and slotting it in gear as it can cause internal damage to the components in the engine or catcon or the FI system.

pratap.pratu & jkDas - I will address these concerns as best as I can in, simple steps. Here goes...

With most bikes from standard manufacturers as soon as you turn on the ignition and prior to thumbing the start button, there are a couple of steps that the ECM does prior to energizing the circuit to the starter motor. Think of it as a pre-flight check a pilot does.

It will check the voltage across the battery terminal. Only if the voltage is 12.3 to 12.5V or more will it energize the starter circuit.

Else, you may hear the fuel pump start up but only a click when the starter button is thumbed.

The other reasons for not starting up if battery voltage is correct, could be a failed starter solenoid (bridging will help you get out this situation) and/ or side stand down/ vehicle in gear/ engine trouble as diagnosed by the ECM.

However, since the topic under discussion is low battery voltage, I will limit discussions.

You could push start some bikes, however, if the bike in question has a slipper clutch, then push starting is out of question.

As BB would confirm, we have push statrted the Bonnie and 675 s right ?

Actually the as with many new batteries - the Triumph ones (usually Yuasa) are maintenance free and is sealed. There is noting much to do with it. One thing you can do is during oil change is to just ensure that the terminals are "salt" free and keep the terminals vasilined.

My 1st Battery lasted more than 3.5 years - with long periods of non use of the bike (often more than 45 days at a stretch) as well in between.

I think the same case with BB's Scrambler

Mate,
Unless the alternator is malfunctioning there is no way a a running battery can run out of charge in midst of riding. Highly unlikely cause if the cells in the battery are bad/weakened then it just cannot afford to start the motorcycle.
Even with a jump start a poor battery will not sustain it once the donor battery's connections are taken off.

Mr Ram - YES! we have push started the Scrambler, the Thruxton and a 675. All after more than 2.5 years on standard batteries and in the mornings when we were desperate for the adrenalin rush on Friday mornings.

Ku69rd - Yes! you are bang on target about a running bike stalling due to the battery - unless it shorts itself out.

On a lighter vein, I had a 1976 Bullet Deluxe, die out on me due to a short with the battery rack. The charge escaped along with the smoke!

Thanks all for sharing some useful info on this. My point was directed towards, how much important a battery indicator is on a bike just like the one we see in cars. Do we have it by the way :) ?
@kU69rd: I understood what u told mate, but what I meant was, if the driver switches off engine during at at traffic signal and to this issue crops up.anyways thanks for your thoughts on this.

Am pretty sure anyone with the right frame of mind would not shut down the engine at traffic signal especially when the battery is dying.
