Re: Mahindra XUV500 : Test Drive & Review

Guys,
Had bought a XUV 5oo W8 about 6 months back, noticed that there is a slight left pulling issue when I went for a long drive on highway few months back. I had changed my tires right on delivery, hence thought it might be due to them and took it to them, they did a wheel alignment balancing and gave it back to me saying it should be OK. I found it was still pulling left, took it to them, they said the numbers are correct, hence asked me to check with service centre.

During my first service, I told them to correct it, they did wheel alignmenrt/balancing rotation again and gave it back to me saying it should be OK. However it is still not the case. Highway or local roads, does not matter any particular speed, few seconds after I take my hands off the wheel, the vehicle starts to drift towards left.

I then checked on the net and found it to be a common problem. While some have been able to fix it, some have not. Among those who have got it fixed, have not reported exactly the details on how they got it fixed. To those who had the problem and got it fixed, can someone throw some light on what should be done to get this rectified?.

Is there anyone in Hyderabad who had this problem and got it fixed. If so, can you send the details of the service centre and service manager details, so that it might be easy for me to explain and the service centre can handle it having already fixed it and having the experience.

While it is not too much of an issue, it is just that I am not able to relax my hands during long drives as I need to constantly correct the vehicle and it takes the pleasure from the ownership experience away from an otherwise awesome vehicle.

Thank you.

Checked the same on mine, its almost 3 years old. No issues.

I had taken my W8 to KTC in Cochin about 3 months back and when I complained about a noise on the Front Left Suspension area, the RM referred to a circular from Mahindra on a niggle on the LHS of the dashboard. He said to fix this the dash has to be removed and if I remember correctly, it is more of a loosely held plastic/fibre component. What he said is the fix will tighten some plastic.fiber clips with some other clips to reduce the noise which is best experienced on patchy roads.

Check with your Service guy on the same. I hope its the same issue.

May be you guys should wait few sec and see what the phone is doing after you dial.
In the similar lines when I use Google maps I do not hear the turn by turn navigation instruction on speaker / phone (it was audible before upgrade). Same is audible on the phone after disconnecting the bluetooth.

I believe its more of a lollipop problem because the bluetooth soundbar also behaves the same way with Moto G2.
Same issue here. After updating my S4 with Lollipop, songs were stopping mid-way. Calls not going properly n so on.
Now using the Note 3 Neo (which I have thankfully not updated to Lollipop) and the system works fine.

OT: My S4 is really screwed with the Lollipop update. Hope Samsung rectifies the issue soon!

PS: Did a trip to Jaipur and back at sane speeds (90-95) as I was with my kids on board. The AWD returned just over 15kmpl with the air-con working overtime. This thing has a potential tank range of over 1000km easily

This is indeed a very common problem. Almost all XUVs pull to one side and that one side is always the left. I think its got to do with the weight distribution under the hood.

Although some people have got the problem fixed, there are no specific details as to "how" the problem was solved.

Many a times, the service center folks - when you insist that it STILL pulls to the left - reduce the pressure in the front right tyre and that's how they manage to get the vehicle to maintain its course. This is a very common trick. So please check the tyre pressure with your own gauge before taking delivery from service center after a WA/WB job.

As you must be aware, when you do wheel alignment, at the end, the three important parameters (caster, camber, toe) need to be within a pre-specified range. Please note, its a range and not a specific number. So conceptually, even when the vehicle is perfectly aligned (all three angles in range), you can still tweak camber and toe settings a bit and still be in the prescribed range. I believe this is the right way of solving the problem, but needs patience and multiple attempts.

Sometimes, even after adjusting the angle to one extreme of the prescribed range, the vehicle still pulls to one side. In such cases, you have 2 options;
1. You can go beyond the prescribed range, fix the pulling issue, but risk uneven wear of tyres.
2. Just live with the pulling to left. The wheels are aligned perfectly, so even if the vehicle is pulling to left, there should not be an impact on tyres.

Thank you so much. I will keep these in mind and now that I know some technical details, I can talk to them and also make sure the parameters
are within specified range.

My vehicle is to be taken to service centre again tomorrow to make an attempt to fix the pulling issue, I hope they are able to fix the problem
without introducing new issues (such as uneven tyre wear etc).

The key fob of my less than 3 yr old beast has already got a hole in it. So bad. Will this be replaced under warranty. Quality issues again. Cos the key fob of my 10 yr+ honda city is still intact.

No this counts as wear n tear... Not a quality issue.. Mine are perfectly fine... On ebay you can get the same flip key for around 1k (just housing) n replace them yourself. A.S.S charges around 5 - 6k i think

Hmmm.. I might not get a warranty replacement in such a case. But still such wear and tear for the key fob of a 15-16 lac car is actually unacceptable. And that too within less than 3 yrs. I always felt the rubber buttons were not that great quality considering the key fobs of other manufacturers, even the cheaper ones. The buttons should have been made of plastic or metallic materials. That would have made the key fob look more upmarket as well as quality.

Same issue with my keys too.

1st key is totally a mess and 2nd one is in similar condition as yours. Will post the pictures soon.

Contacted my RM and she told me it will take 1 month to procure the key and ordered for the same.

Previously was having Hyundai Elantra, and used it for 8yrs without any such issues.

Mahindara C'mon you need to provide better quality at this segment.

You can buy a key shell for the key of your XUV 500.

How much of a deal breaker is this left veering? I have seen users reporting shoulder ache, close shaves with other motorists due to this niggle. I can live with a few noises here and there for a while but the left veering sounds concerning.

If it's the weight distribution, shouldn't it be on all XUV's? When does this left veering onset, is it after certain km's on the ODO assuming the wheel allignment might have gone awry.

This is one concern holding me back, I am hoping the problem is taken care in the facelift. With your advice I will check the tire psi 32? on all 4 wheels before taking a long test drive.

My xuv also had the left pulling issue and yes I used to get aches on my hands as well .
The issue is fixed more or less by the ASS by rotating wheels and alignment .
Recently got alignment done again from a well known tyre shop in Bangalore and now the car runs on a straight line .
The issue sometimes crop up and the culprit is uneven tyre pressure on the front wheels .

I faced the same issue with my brand new XUV. This issue was sorted out by wheel alignment at the service centre itself. Its not a deal breaker for sure.

What I feel any car will pull little left at high speed due to slope on the roads so that rain water don't accumulate.

It is really not a big deal. I had reported this issue couple of days back and my problem is 95% fixed and I have decided to live with that. The 5% is negligible. My XUV was given to service centre yesterday and they have fixed the 95% of the pulling issue. Earlier it used to take couple of secs after I take the hands of the wheel for the vehicle to start drifting (irrespective of the speed), now there seems to be a tendency to drift but not on slow speeds but higher speeds of 60 and above but after several secs, which definitely is good enough for me. Earlier, I had to constantly keep correcting the wheel as the pull was more prominent to the left, but that is not the case anymore.

I can ask them to fix it 100% but like SDP had earlier mentioned, it is more like a trial and error and I dont want them to try to correct it 100% but in the process deteriorate what I have now.

What I am more happy about this whole process is the way my RM handled it. She was constantly in touch with me, to help me out, asking if I still see the issue, taking appointments and arranging drivers to pick and drop etc. The vehicle was taken 3 times to the service centre and the 2nd time it was given back, the problem was more severe but touchwood now, I am pretty happy with the result.

So net net, yes this looks like a design issue and should have been fixed at the manufacturing facility itself, but atleast the service centre was proactive enough to address my problem and not wash their hands away, so I am one happy customer.

To sum up, this is not a deal breaker, only thing is that if you have some patience, you can get it fixed and should not hold you back from buying this awesome vehicle.
