I read in Team BHP threads that A represents January, B February....J September ['i' excluded, reasons I do not know]. Apart from VIN, the sales executive has given engine number as 7022516. In fact, earlier, I had selected Medium Grey for which VIN given was MCAxxxxxxEPZ. Since EPZ represented May 2009, I changed my colour from Medium Grey to Fox Trote Azure although I knew that both these new colours are introduced in August 2009 only. How a vehicle with VIN code of May 2009 could come with a new colour introduced in August 2009, is a million dollar question, which only Fiat/Tata people could answer. The sales executive did not have any iota of knowledge about decoding VIN. Since I do not want to buy my favourite car even with slightest lingering doubt about the date of actual manufacture, I finally selected Fox Trote Azure, which anyway my wife preferred over Medium Grey!

Since 1981, VINs consist of 17 characters which do not include the letters I (i), O (o), or Q (q) (to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0).
In FIAT's case letter "Q" is used. so there is no point in avoiding "I" too.

@wildon,
Excellent analysis. Spot ON and matches 100% with my Linea's VIN.
Can you share the site where this info is found?

Medium-Grey was introduced few months before of FTA.
They were not released at same time. I think May/June was when I saw medium-grey option in the Fiat website.

Its not from a website , its from a FIAT spare parts software.

The 3 alphabets are interesting, as i think it represents MM/DD/YYYY

Till now i have got following 3 alphabets from various members
AQZ
BQZ
CQZ
DPZ
EPZ
FPZ
GPZ
HPZ
JPZ

A= Jan , B= Feb etc. Does any one have last 3 alphabets starting from 'I' ( i ) , if no we can conclude that its not been used and there is already 'J' reported from a yet to be delivered vehicle. [if 'I' ( i ) is not reported then 'J' means September]

The second alphabet is till now either 'P' or 'Q'. Third is still constant on 'Z' so i think it represent year 2009.

UPDATE:

I just found out that FIAT VIN decoding doesn't reveals the Production date , it only reveals the Production Month and Year.

I'll make it more interesting !

Mine has a Q in VIN & my car does not have towhook in rear bumper.

Yours has a Q in VIN & your car does not have towhook in rear bumper.

Now until someone has a Q in VIN & also has towhook in rear bumper ..

Oh no ! towhook ! Not again

I will do those honours sirji
Mine is a BQZ and also has a tow hook at the rear bumper. Now dont say the dealer has replaced an accidental bumper on my car.
Someone please say your chasis also has a "Q" and has a tow hook.
I havent seen any F RED Linea with a tow hook till now, only silvers had it like Pranav's and mine.

P & Q are still a puzzle to me.
First i thought was it will be the plant code. P= Pune
But then whats Q
Does any one knows a Indica Vista/Fiat Palio VIN Number may be we will get a clue from that

Hi All,
Am running off to Concorde Motors Bangalore late afternoon today to take delivery of my own "Admiration Guaranteed". Had postponed the delivery for a few days, as everyone in the family wanted delivery to be taken on dhanteras.

BTW, she's Medium Grey and her VIN is MCA110D1709010109JPZ.
Does it say anything or add to the confusion?
@Wildon: I think you are closest to decoding the whole VIN.
@Vahan: Linking VIN and towhook was awesome!
