Lalu, HVK, Shibu, KSM & others on the Trip,

This is one JUMBO T-log, can become a reference 'Text Book' for Ladakh trip. The flower pictures are very good and changes the tone of the story.
HVK, waiting for the full log, would be one heck of a log from what I have seen from the past. Looks like you have stretched yourself this time, what new elements have you brought into these logs? Hats off to you to make it so thorough.

Looking forward to more, keep them coming.

Chandini Chowk to China is cheaper - you can watch it on small screen!
Chennai to China - I don't have that kind of money to wrangle permits from Beijing and pay exorbitant costs.

It is super-expensive One of my friends is doing it next year, will update you about it as it happens. As for me, I tried 2 years in succession - in the years 2008 & 2009 - but that did not happen because of visa/permit-related issues.

Indians at least can drive to the lovely Himalayan kingdoms of Bhutan & Nepal, but unless Burma improves its road networks or Pakistan sheds its belligerence towards Indian motorist-tourists, we can continue to see the vast country that is all ours!

It was a mistake to take the vehicle up there, with no space to manoeuvre and steep slopes.

HVK carefully took the Scropio down and we drove on to our next Gompa.

Day 15
26th August 2011
Leh

After lunch we proceeded to Hemis Monastery, but a wrong turn took us to Markha valley.

Markha Valley - what a find it was. I enjoyed our short drive there immensely. Very colourful valley to sum it up.

We reached Hemis Monastery by 16:15 hours. Since I had visited Hemis in details in 2009, I did not go inside.

There is an interesting read in 'Jesus lived in India' by Holger Kersten. As per the research by the German author, a religious historian and theologist, during the 12th-30th year of Jesus's life when there are no records of life of Jesus in the Bible, Jesus had travelled to India with the intention of perfecting himself and of learning from the laws of Buddhism and Hinduism. It is mentioned in some scrolls available at Hemis Gompa. Jesus had taken the Silk Route to India.

There are some interesting studies on the subject, and proofs. The topic is controversial that including His Holiness Dalai Lama has denied the presence of such documents at Hemis, and most documents from Hemis were moved to a different place.

There is also a documentary on the same, and from the information collected the actual tomb of Jesus is in Kashmir, apparently believed in Kashmir to be the tomb of an Islamic saint. It is currently under protection by the government of India, after a scholar wanted to take DNA samples to prove the case in pont. But 9/11 and its after math had made her studies impossible now.

Please google for more details if interested. I just wanted to mention the topic. I am in no way endorsing any of these views - But only putting forth to an educated TBHP community for awareness and further reading as interested.

There are so many mysteries about Ladakh! After all, one of the branches of the Silk Route went through this region. The theory of Jesus having lived in Kashmir. Those intriguing Draupudi Kunds & Bhimbetas so far away from the conventional Mahabharata locations......and so on.

Hemis is the largest gompas in Ladakh and its hidden location suggests its strategic importance, maybe it hides many secrets like what Lalu says.
