Re: Toyota Fortuner : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hello fellow BHPians,

We have a Fortuner 4x2 2018 variant and it has clocked over 1,05,000 km over the years, mainly used by my dad for business trips. The OEM Bridgestone Dueler A/T (I still have no idea as to why Toyota gave A/T tyres in 4x2 variants and H/T in Sigma 4, when it should be the opposite), were replaced by Apollo Apterra AT2 265/65R17 112H (after almost 80,000km in November of 2022) and all I can say, except the road noise, those tyres are miles better than the OE bridgestone tyres. One of the tyres have been replaced and the fact that the warranty claim process was so seamless (except that we had to drive on the Spare tyre for 5 days). We went to the Apollo dealer, claimed Warranty, gave 15% of the original tyre cost (=INR 1,800) and after inspection we got our new one. The main point I wanted to mention here is, after almost 25,000 km, the tyre was used only 15% (apollo wanted to say the these tyres will last for 1 lakh more km). Now that, I have decided that after driving the car for 1.5 lakh km, we will switch to Yokohama Geolandar, since my city previously didn't have a Yokohama dealer (got my Verna upsized tyres with 205/55 R16 BluEarth GT AE51 from there, barely took 20 minutes with alignment and balancing).

So yeah, the experience was pretty cool with both Yokohama and Apollo, can't say about bridgestone.
Thanks.

Hi cooldip,
With the increased size, how is the clearance on the inside of the front wheels?

Did you ever face any rubbing issues or did you ever try putting snow chains on?

I've not used snow chains but I'm pretty sure there won't be any issues.

Please note that this is after the additional lift.

Okay, I think I will need to do a bit of hit & try to confirm, but your feedback sounds encouraging.

Yeap, noted. I need a tyre change so I am trying to plan an upsize + lift combo.

By the way, what brand lift are you running?
And maybe one more question: How much increase in body roll did you face? High enough to make you feel that you should have opted for something other than the BFGs, as I understand they are on the higher side of the weight chart?
Thank you

Thank you
I use an ARB Old Man Emu Nitrocharger Sport (no bullbar config) suspension. It has about 2" of lift.

The OME springs add a lot more stability inspite of the higher center of gravity.

I've never regretted my decision with the 275/65/17 BFGs.

I was using Michelin Latitude Cross with stock suspension and it had possibly equal amounts of body roll.

These days most trips are with a full car and a rooftop cargo box. When I take a corner on narrow mountain roads I do have to be mindful of my speed. Does it feel any less enjoyable to drive? Not to me at least.

Thanks for the detailed revert. Wishing you incredible journeys with this amazingly prepped vehicle.

Re: Toyota Fortuner : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Dear BHPians,,

I recently acquired a Type 2 4x2 Fortuner, which currently has Dunlop OEM tires installed since 2012. Although there is still some tread remaining on the tires, the rubber has hardened over time, and in my opinion, it may not be safe to continue using them. Therefore, I am seeking recommendations for a new set of tires that prioritize good road grip and excellent braking performance. I won't be engaging in any off-roading activities, as the vehicle will primarily be used on highways (95%) and occasionally on poorly maintained city roads (5%), as well as for short drives to my farm. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Re: Toyota Fortuner : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Dear members,
I own a 2010 fortuner and the tyres are due for an upgrade. Currently on the Yokohama Geolandars G015, but I've been smitten by the Wanderer AT's, having seem them on the Endeavour and Thar. Any reviews regarding the tyres and the ride quality??

Re: Toyota Fortuner : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

I had used MRF Wanderers for 5 years on my Pajero, NO complaints.
The Tires served me well, used them for 25K Kms, mostly on road usage.

Swapped them due to their age and suspension lift on my vehicle.

Are these the MRF's? I personally have no experience with MRF's. So can not comment on them.

I have used / driven the G015 from Yokohama, Continental Cross contact AT's (Cross contact AX-6 is available in India), Goodyear Wrangler AT / SA (amazing tires, though a bit heavy, have used this too).

Then there would be Pirelli Scorpion ATR's, the usual BF Goodrich & Maxxis MT or AT tires, depending on your preference and use case. Michelin too has come up with a LTX TRAIL ST tires. It's a new launch, hence no first hand experience.

My suggestions are for the 17 inch Fortuner tires and all suggestions are AT based. Hope it helps.

The Apollo Apterra HT2 and JK Ranger HT are Highway Terrain options for the 17 inch (4x2 variants) of the Fortuner, but I don't know how people getting their AT counterparts (as we have Apterra AT2 on our Fortuner).
If you all know, the 4x4 variants of the Fortuner gets HT tyres and that's not the case in 4x2.

Re: Toyota Fortuner : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hello BHPians, I am planning on to swap tires on Fortuner 4x4 MT with BFGoodrich Ko2 A/T 265/60/R18 (Stock Configuration)

However when I called up few dealers in Hyderabad, none have the stock.

I was really looking forward to install the BFGoodrich Tires. If any of you fellow BHPians get any updates regarding availability of these, it will be great to know the same.

Also, One dealer had the stock for BFGoodrich 285/60/R18. I'm unsure if i should take the plunge for this tire configuration as these would cause rubbing from the inner wheel fenders while turning.

I am taking the delivery on 30th May, so thought of doing the swap on that day itself (The dealer has given me a cushion of 100km for the swap with 50% buyback scheme)

Has anyone upgraded tires from 265 to 285 without installing the lift kit ?

Would be great to hear out your opinions and advices.

Attaching picture of the Bridgestones after almost 40,000 kms and close to three years. Still good to go another 20 or 25,000 kms, I guess.
No off-roading done. Mainly city and highway. Tyre balancing and alignment done every six months. Tried different tyre pressure combinations. Found best one for me to be Front - 32, Back - 34

Re: Toyota Fortuner : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Dear bhp'ians.. I need your guidance on a tyre upgrade for my 2022 Fortuner Sigma 4 MT. My vehicle has done less than 8k kms over the past 2 years. My truck came with H/T tyres by default. The reason I'm looking for a tyre change is due to an issue which I faced last week during my visit to Sakleshpur. Owing to an amazing weather at one of the homestays, we decided to do some offroading and head towards Yedakumeri. My vehicle's tyre started slipping from the word go since we started from homestay. The Traction control light started blipping a few times. When we reached the Off Road Part, the road was full of slush and sticky soil. Within no time, my truck was stuck (Partially) with my entire tyre's grooves full of soil. Zero Traction. I've done off roading quite a few times with my old Fortuner which had AT tyres and even though I had some issues with traction, it was never so bad. We had to park our car and walk for 3 km to reach the destination. I have zero confidence on this H/T and looking for some guidance on what would be a good option. Driving will mostly be on highways with occasional Off Roading.
