mainly looks. but they are lighter than steel wheels and can marginally increase the fuel economy.

One of the reasons people use Alloy wheels is bacause its really hard to find the perfect size of steel wheels for their new tires. For example,A person wanting to use 205 section tires would buy 6.5j alloys as the same would not be available in Steel Rims.Steel rims Would generally be 5j-5.5j and using 205 section tires on these would be an overkill. The tires would bulge out of the rim .. Hope you got it ..

Another reason is steel bends quite easily and running very low profile tires on them would have disastrous consequences while driving over bad roads. No such problems on an alloy rim.

Tell me this... why do a person for a normal driving needs such a low profile tyre? They tarred the road outside my apartment 3,4 months back. And now after all these rain, there are huge carters all over. My car comes with 175/70r13. Upsizing to 185/65 will not hurt the current steel rims. Also up sizing to 185, with much better rubber, should suffice 99% of usage. So why upgrade beyond that???

What you said might be true for very few people who try out their car on tracks. But mostly one up size on steel rim should be fine. Unless the car is ridiculously under tired.

well i think this should depend on the cost/percieved value of the car...
I would not go in for local/rice alloys on a BMW, Merc, Audi etc...similarly, will not go european on a rice machine...

Can you suggest me a VERY economical replacement for the alloys and the tyres on my car with brand names for both and prices? I want to know if a tyre size is 165/60/R13 then the R13 means the alloy diameter, what does 165 and 60 mean?

I'm sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere but I havn't been able to find it and I appreciate if anyone can suggest me options in Delhi.
Car Bibles : The Wheel and Tyre Bible Page 1 of 2

go through this link and read the tyre bible to help you understand better about the diameter/ tyre specification codes i am sure they will help you understand better!

and also guys there is a thread where the best alloys is discussed

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/tyre-a...an-market.html

this might help out a few here!

HR, Plati, League or Lenso? Mainly considering durability and looks

Also which of these provide a warranty?

Evolve - 5Zigen are certainly good but I fear they would turn out to be quite expensive landed in India. Could you for example just check what a set of 4 15" 100 PCD 4-lug wheels will costs landed? Would give us an idea of whether it's feasible/affordable or not. Thanks.
