Pre / Post War Pontiac

On going through the various posts, I do not see too many Pontiac's. This was a mass selling car in US. But, here on Team BHP see very few.

There is a wonderfully maintained Pontiac Silver Streak, 1948, in Chennai which I understand from KPS was originally in Bangalore, one in Simla, locked up in a dispute or trust. Another well maintained one is in Jaipur, which comes for the Rally. Am aware there is one locked up with a family in Calcutta, 1946-47 model and they have no intention to sell or restore it.

Dr. Ravi Prakash has any early 40's Pontiac, which i had the privilege to see.
Are there more ? Please contribute with photographs.

Cheers

Hi, the Chennai car actually came from Coimbatore, was restored in Bangalore.
If we look around a bit harder, we may find more 1947 cars than prewar. Mumbai had two prewar cars, one must be with Doc in white?, it was seen on t-bhp lying in Delhi being worked on with a BMX number. In Delhi there is another orange coloured roadster. Other than these I do not many prewar. I have very few old photos of Pontiacs.
There are a few Pontiacs of about 1951, and another left hand drive Mumbai car was with Bahadur.
Why this interest in Pontiacs? Is there one more in Kolkatta?

Hi Harit, Doc's pre -war is White, you are absolutely right.
The interest is there as there was another one lying in North Bengal, which I did pick up. Am sure there are more!!
A few photographs from you huge archive would be a wonderful feast to our eyes.

Re: Pre / Post War Pontiac

There was one Yellow Pontiac in Bombay, mid 40s lying in a basement of a building in Malabar Hill. I tried to get the owner (a Doctor) to sell the car, trying to negotiate through a friend who stays in the same building. Unfortunately every time i agreed to his price he dilly-dallied and increased his price. Its a different thing that i bought two cars from the same building. It was there a few years ago too, complete with each and every garnish and all but badly rusted and deteriorated. I guess either it must have disinter grated or scrapped (though i doubt the second option) If its still there, im sure the chassis must be like old paper now, ridled with holes. Unfortunate but true.

Re: Pre / Post War Pontiac

Sparky, the 1947 Pontiac Streamliner was purchased earlier this year from a relative.

From the photographs you will notice the the awful paint job on it. Unfortunately, when this car was painted a few years back a lot of body and dash parts went missing as the owner of the workshop in Siliguri died suddenly.

Since purchasing the car, we have imported most of the parts a few items are still left to bought. The engine started within 20 Mts, mechanically except for the water pump, everything works!

Re: Pre / Post War Pontiac

Compared to the other GM cousins, Pontiacs in India were somewhat few. I think Bombay state also had a Pontiac cabrio along with the Buick. Maybe Harit has some pictures of it to share.

There are still a fair amount surviving, here are some misc pictures taken from vairous threads on the forum itself.

This car I believe belongs to Syedna, leader of the Bohri community. Note the raised hood.

This smart car was spotted in Goa. Wonder what became of it.

This 1940 (?) car was ex Bombay, then Delhi, and now I believe Bangalore.

This immaculate car was advertised for sale on Tutu Dhawan's website.

Re: Pre / Post War Pontiac

Was there a Pontiac dealer in India? Any idea who they were?

Karlos, thanks for the photographs, one thing I notice there were more post 1949 Pontiac's here in India.

Being from the GM stable, seeing so many Buicks, Chevrolets and Oldsmobile it is surprising to note that very few Pontiacs were imported in. Can anyone throw light on this?

Cheers
