It's not very often that we get to see a Rolls-Royce that hasn't been posted on TBHP before, so this got me quite excited.

( MODEL NO 1913 CHASSIS NO 2354 ENGINE NO 69J RC NO UPG9192)

I just spoke to a friend in Kanpur and he told me that this particular Rolls has a 4 speed transmission and was used as a racing car, it was under some dispute for some 20 odd years in Kanpur itself and the current owners, bought it and sent it for restoration , it has been restored by Mr. Jonathan Harley, and is owned by Mr. Tariq Ibrahim, if I got the name right.

I think then this is the car that was raced by a Spanish Count, and a sister car for the longest time to the other Ghost (also pictured in the same event), also 1913, a Barker Limousine #2286. Great to see the car out and about.

Very happy to have finally seen the car and it's traced 😃 many were wondering where it had gone . How the car came about in India is still a mystery and I am sure the desired build sheet would have that information. A prime example of the model !

I do remember seeing many period photos with the dots as well, though on painted plates. Mainly UP and MP/CP if I remember right. I'm sure Cedric can share some examples - if he is reading this

EDIT - I found this picture of a DKW motorcycle ex Patiala. Its highly original down to paint, and the plate is likely to be original as well, if not decades old.

In the very early days of motoring, plates were mostly hand painted and the detail of the style lay very much in the hands of the painter. In those days some painters in some areas chose to put periods between the letters - no doubt for their own aesthetic reasons.
By the 1939 series, painted plates were rare and periods were rarer but some (old?) painters continued with them.
This photo shows them also on a Calcutta bus.

Has U.P.G. 9192 (note the full stops ) grown in length after restoration? Or does it seem like that because the spare has moved to the other side?



Also the TBHP watermark, especially across smaller pictures is really a hindrance.

Hope the mods find an art director to design a watermark that doesn't cover crucial parts of the pictures. Or a frame for the pictures, which can be edited, come to think of it, or something lighter/smaller/many small ones, etc.

The other day, saw a newspaper clipping that was half covered by the watermark.

Incidentally these plates have been on the car for decades - I recently saw them in an old black and white photo of the car.
