The car as she was in the early 1980's, when for sale. See, it had a roof. It is not a rebodied car, it has been chopped.

On page 44, post 647, Karl has posted a picture of this very car when new.

A stunner, now butchered

re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

The original sports saloon configuration couldn't have been too common for a Phantom III - I guess most were more formal saloons and Limousines.

Here are pics from Harit and Steve, I'm putting them together for convenience

While discussing the car the other day, Calcutta based restorer Shrivardhan Kanoria shares some insight. He says his father Shashi Kanoria bought the car in 1991 from Tom Roy. At the time all that was left of the body were two crushed front fenders, a damaged bonnet and one left rear saloon door. A young budding artist, Shrivardhan has the fortune of having designed the new coachwork as a young boy

RR PI, Chassis 122HC and a Chevrolet Suburban from the movie Elephant Walk, initially shot in Ceylon.

Vivien Leigh fell ill during the making; and was replaced by Liz Taylor. Other pics on the web too.
Vivien Leigh is seen in both these photos.
This 1925 Phantom I 122HC arrived in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in 1934, and has remained there ever since, having changed hands a few times. It is now in derelict condition, yet with most of its original Barker tourer body remaining.

Kasli,

As far as I know, this particular car has been re-bodied abroad, hence the unusual door length vis-a-vis the rest of the car.

Above is a period picture of Silver Ghost 64AB - with "normal" sized door.

The wings and much of the body has been altered too.

Value also derives from this car's celebrity-riddled origin: An Indian prince named Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, who was also a major cricket star in England, commissioned the car in 1932. The Phantom II was the third and last of Rolls' 40- and 50-horsepower models; it was the last of the Rolls-Royce cars to have its design overseen from beginning to end by Henry Royce himself. It has a pushrod straight 6-cylinder engine and a four-speed manual transmission. It comes with distinctive round twin headlamps and a circular fog lamp in front of the aforementioned wraparound rear window.

Unfortunately, Ranjitsinhji died before he ever drove the thing. After his death, Rolls sold the car to Amy Davies, heiress to the Tate & Lyle sugar fortune.

Do we have the chassis number identified? Wonder if this isn't another car attributed to Indian royalty before auction to bump up values. Just yesterday I saw an ad for it, where it was specified as a Windovers Trials car. I love the unique rear screen treatment.
