What a hash! And the results are not even pleasing. Notice how the trim line suddenly drops at the door? I do not understand this business of appropriating and trying to improve on another man's work. Why not create something new? It is akin to renaming VT as CST. Why not build a better station and name that CST? That would make me a prouder Maharashtrian

Sadly, re-bodying/ modifying in order to pump up the price (I wont use the word 'value') is not limited to our country. So many 3 and 4 1/2 litre Bentleys have lost their beautiful saloon bodies to replica Vanden Plas Le Mans tourer coachwork.

Kind reards

Aditya

Thanks Wasif for the nice picture.

Wonder if the Nehru car is the same as the Darbhanga one (Chassis B171KL).
Obviously many similarities, including colour scheme.

We had discussed the Darbhanga car before, maybe also a video.

Did you notice the Bentley appears to be wearing different registration plates in both the picture.

Was this at one time part of the Nizams garage ? What is the Nehru / Darbhanga connection

I do not know the car's history (or where it is today).

In the first picture (with King of Nepal), it is wearing British plates - so must have been a recent import at that time.

Re: Classic Bentleys in India

The Hyderabad car most likely is Azamjah's Bentley which Mukarramjah used later in Hyd and took to Australia where it apparently was eventually left to deteriorate.

It was probably the Park Ward DHC #B6LJ, later registered APY 4808.

Re: Classic Bentleys in India

What we have here is a classic Bentley, in India, but not Indian. The 1962 S2 Continental convertible was here for the Jewel of India rally held in 2001. The oil pan got damaged somewhere between Rewa and Mangawan and the vehicle was sent to us at Allahabad for safe keeping. What the pity our crude loading systems resulted in a damaged front end. I had the privilege of 'driving' it on tow when it was unloaded here.
Accompanying the Bentley was a Jaguar XK120 which had some mechanical problems. We managed to start the car and even got to drive it.

That's interesting as I worked on two cars that were participating in this Jewel Of India ralley of 2001.

One was the BRG MGB and the other was the Volvo Amazon. The MGB had a burnt clutch, they were planning to exit the event and cart it back but we managed to change the clutch for them and they were able to complete the event.

The Volvo had broken its rear coilspring. The owners daughter flew in with a replacement which we changed and this car too went on to finish the vent.

This was when they had stopped for the night at the Banjara Hotel in Hyderabad.

We also helped with one of the 4.5 Liter Bentleys too. I still have the pics and a set of Jewel of India Rally plates

The event brought us closer to restorations abroad. I remember there were four 1928-29 LeMans Bentleys in the rally. The S2 Continental that was brought here belonged to Edwin Hammond.

The MGB that Wasif ji refers to was probably the most modern participant, an early 70s model. With 8 Bentleys amongst the 15 cars that participated (right from 1924 to 1962), it was more of a Bentley run.

There was an Alfa Zagato also but it crashed in the early stages
