My Honda City CVT got stuck in Park Mode after making whining noises

It happened when I was out on a long drive. Honda roadside assistance couldn't help unless the car could be put in neutral.

BHPian RotBohnen recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

While on a longish drive, the car made a whining noise a few times. The sound was like a high-pitched bleating goat and lasted around 10 seconds each time.

I parked on the side of the road to see if I could hear noises while parked and there were none. But when I tried to start the journey again, the shifter wouldn't move.

Based on the previous threads here and on advice from the Honda service center, the following were tried.

  • Use a key or screwdriver to press on the shift lock insert and try to shift to neutral.
  • Switch off the engine, rock the car back and forth and then try to shift. Try the same with the engine turned on.
  • Check for the brake indicator.
  • Check the fuses / one of them had gone off and was replaced. Still didn't change the situation.

Called a mechanic local to this area as Honda Roadside Assistance couldn't help unless the car could be in neutral. They were helpful enough to point me to their service center contacts and have them do phone guidance. The local mechanic looked at every mechanical issue he could think of and then recommended taking it to Honda directly.

At wits end, the car is now awaiting a towing service to be dragged to Brigade Honda service center in Yelahanka.

But this makes me super curious about what could have gone wrong. Perhaps a damaged gear wheel? A transmission issue?

Will keep the post updated as and when I hear back from the service center.
