I own a 2015 Jaguar XF 2.2 L with 50k Km on the Odo. Serviced by Jaguar less than 2K km ago and given a clean chit.
It was running fine till then, with no warning lights or noticeable issues when driving, such as gears slipping or any weird noises during shifts.
But all of a sudden last week, it refused to start or even crank one evening.
Had the car towed and after inspection, the Jaguar SA says the likely reason is a transmission oil cooler failure which has allowed coolant to mix with the transmission oil, causing the transmission to fail completely and also blow a fuse in the process which was the reason the car wouldn't start.
The recommendation is to have the entire transmission replaced as a flush or a rebuild won't work. The cost of a new transmission is prohibitively expensive.
Doing my research online, this does not seem to be a common issue with the Jaguar, which has the solid ZF8 transmission. Even failures of the oil cooler (more common) don't seem to be something that commonly causes a complete transmission failure in the car, especially in less than 2k Km after being inspected and serviced at the dealership.
Any advice on how to proceed with handling the issue and getting the car back on the road? Unsure if there is a possibility of a rebuild I did look up used transmissions from Europe which are reasonably priced, but coding the TCM to the car maybe a challenge.
Also, any possibility of writing to JLR and trying to hold them accountable in some way for the uncommon issue (especially at 5k Kms) or their negligence in spotting any symptoms?
Thank You.

Here's what GTO had to share regarding this matter:
You need to take the car out to a competent independent garage for getting a second opinion, and seeing if the gearbox is repairable or not. Authorised dealer workshops never repair - they only replace.
Worst case, if it indeed needs replacement, be open to finding a used gearbox from a salvaged XF. But that's the problem with buying a low-volume model. Salvage XFs won't be as commonly available as say, popular sedans from Mercedes & BMW. You'll have to dig deeper.
Please keep this thread updated as it will help others.
Meanwhile, here's what BHPian ajmat had to say:
This was a common fault and happens due to corrosion. It used to happen to a lot of Mercedes C classes. Ideally, this should have been detected when traces of oil appeared in the coolant. If detected earlier, the cooling matrix could have been replaced in time.

Hi guys, so knock on the wood I have had the loveliest 35,000 km with my Jaguar XF tuned to 306 BHP by GT Tunerz Delhi and has a full downpipe and exhaust . The car has been immaculate and nothing else has been done other than routine service and bumper replacement thanks to a small hit. Itâs still going strong and turning heads and feels pretty timeless but considering itâs age I feel itâs time to let go so the next owner can enjoy a good few years too. The car has been most special car I have owned and I say that despite having F02 7 Series and a fully tuned F30 320d so the replacement has to be something which feels like an actual upgrade and doesnât make me miss the Jag much so basically good looking, have decent features that we can expect from a sub E Class segment, Good speakers, Have 4 seats and be Fun to Drive. Have shortlisted the following; wanted to discuss and take a call as I have time and this upgrade is planned over the next 6-8 months and not immediately.
Option 01: Porsche Taycan 4S Facelift (upcoming)
A Porsche is a Porsche, no questions asked and ever since I test drove one it felt like nothing else I have driven this side of a Supercar. Surprisingly felt very comfy too. Downside- charging infra considering I do often 500-1000 kms road trips from Patna to Delhi/Kolkata. Also going a bit on the expensive side.
Option 02: Porsche Cayenne Coupe. Nothing out of the world but the Porsche badge.
Option 03: E53 AMG Cabrio. V6, Convertible, Loaded with features be it cooled seats, Burmeister and added benefit of the convertible.
Option 04: BMW M2. Honestly have kept this one last as there have been multiple BMWs in the household throughout and it all just feels too familiar. But the Manual Gearbox and the tuning capibilities and âusableâ 4 seats adds this to the list.
Here's what GTO had to say on the matter:
Amazing dilemma to be in! Since you have a ~2 crore budget:
Porsche Taycan S. You clearly love it, I do too. It's fast, it's electric and it's a true Porsche. Retains the brand DNA.
If open to electric, do also consider the EQS 580. It's a phenomenal EV.
- BMW M5? You could snag a lightly used one for ~1.5 crores. Reliable, scary fast, family-friendly, take it anywhere & everywhere.
- Porsche 911? Ditto for lightly used examples. This will really be the cream of the crop. You could literally drive it anywhere.
- BMW X5 M & Porsche Cayenne. Just saying since you have a lot of sedans. A fast SUV will bring some added practicality.
Here's what BHPian HighRevving had to say on the matter:
Those are very varied options. I am thinking you are working backwards with a budget to see what all can fit in, which is not a bad thing but not ideal either.
For example, the E is a big car in Cabriolet variant and the M2 is a small performance car with not even a sunroof on offer. A Cayenne S, though mighty powerful, wouldn't come in the same category when it comes to eating corners around a track.
I guess you have to ask yourself - how much luxury do I want versus how much outright performance/driving fun do I want? For someone like me, the driving fun just supersedes everything - if I were in your place, I would pick the M2 in this list and ensure I always sit in the car so I don't have to look at it.
Here's what BHPian SNA411 had to say on the matter:
Hold on to the jag for a year more, and then get the new panamera.
Heard a very thorough facelift is due soon.

If you were to take a random poll, you probably will find a lot of fans who love Jaguar. The brand has an incredible allure and many even consider it to be more premium than Mercedes-Benz & BMW! So, why is it that no one is buying Jaguars? When was the last time you saw a relative, friend or colleague getting a brand-new Jaguar home?
Hereâs a similar thread by GTO on the performance of Audi.
Jaguar is at an all-time low in terms of sales, piggybacking off Land Roverâs profits & strengths. How does a brand go from having such high aspirational value to something thatâs not even being considered when buying a new car?
Here are some of the factors that are hampering the brand. Please feel free to add more to the discussion.
No relevant SUVs / Crossovers in a market crazy about them! Jaguar has merely 1 luxury SUV in the F-Pace and that's too old & outdated now. The small E-Pace isn't sold in India (it's also 6 years old), while the I-Pace will remain a bit player (it's electric & expensive). This is especially surprising as sister company Land Rover-Range Rover thrives on its SUV & Crossover line-up.
Aging, outdated product line: Other than a tiny SUV line-up, Jaguar has 2 sedans (XE and XF) and a sports car (F-Type) on sale. The sedans are quite old & outdated (2015 launches), while the F-Type has been around for 9 years (2014 debut). And these arenât really bringing in any huge numbers. In 2021, more units of the Jeep Wrangler were sold in the UK than the Jaguar XF! Jaguarâs mass-market sedan, the XE is being outsold by the S-Class since 2018 in Europe! In India, we just have the F-Pace, I-Pace and F-Type. The sedans were discontinued, and it doesnât really leave customers with a lot of options. Can you guess why the sedans were discontinued? Yep, awful sales. No one really bought them.
In the era of Jaguar under Tata, new models and platforms were introduced with heavy investments. However, the cars havenât been updated which has resulted in making them irrelevant in the market.
Faulty strategy? Thierry BollorĂŠ, the former CEO of JLR took over in 2020 and came up with the âReimagineâ strategy to go fully electric by 2025. This seems like a step in the positive direction, but one cannot abandon ICE customers altogether. According to the strategy, this will be a fresh start meaning, all the cars in their current line-up will be trashed. New cars, new platforms, new everything. While the strategy on paper looks great, "all-electric" also means that petrol & diesel car buyers will have to ignore the brand. Fact is, petrol & diesel luxury cars will enjoy good demand way beyond 2025 and Jaguar is dumping them.
It also means that the tiny line-up will continue. Luxury cars require billions of dollars in development costs and Jaguar-Land Rover doesn't have that kind of R&D spend for a wide product line. At least at the start of the "reimagine" strategy.
Discontinuing the flagship XJ! In lieu of the new strategy, the new XJ which was the flagship limousine was cancelled. Remember that the XJ was already in final pre-production testing and was even designed as a pure electric vehicle. But since it didnât align with the vision of the future, it was canned. This wouldâve been the perfect vehicle for the transition - how can a luxury brand not have a flagship luxury limousine? We are especially disappointed as, at the time of launch, the XJ had a wow factor unmatched by any of its German competitors.
In terms of having a flagship SUV, Range Rover has never been inclined to share its flagship with Jaguar. In fact, we see a shocking lack of sharing between Land Rover / Range Rover and Jaguar. I don't understand why we don't have more SUVs shared between the two, but with different bodies, interiors, branding etc. (like the VAG group with Audi + Porsche + Lamborghini, Toyota-Lexus, BMW-Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Maybach etc.).
Incomplete engines & Transmissions: Compare the powertrain options of the Jaguar and its competitors and you will immediately notice the difference. The German competitors offer something for everyone, as in this segment, a 4-cylinder petrol and diesel would do the job, but you need a 6-cylinder diesel or petrol to keep things exciting. The 3.0L V6 diesel and the V6 supercharged petrol engines that were offered on the F-Pace never made it to India. Even the XE was offered only with the 2.0L petrol engine that too in a lower state of tune in India. The engine wasnât as explosive as say the 2.0L BMW 330i and the transmission tuning was pretty sad. One of the reasons why buyers preferred the German brands over Jaguar.
Boring lineup: Jaguars have been known for impressive engines and explosive performance. But if you look at the lineup today, all you find are the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder units. Gone are the supercharged V6 and V8 engines. Or even the 6-cylinder diesel!! The previous XFâs supercharged V8 offered a good challenge to the M5, but not anymore. XE Project 8 was limited to just 300 units. The F-Type has always been an exciting and cool-looking car. But the rivals caught up soon and made better products.
Reliability and After-Sales service quality: This is an area where Jaguar has really trailed the Germans & Lexus. Word on the street is, their reliability is patchy (related article), the after-sales network is small, and the service quality is a hit or miss. Long wait periods for certain spare parts are a customer complaint.
Missing Aspirational Value: Because of all of the above points (in particular the lack of crossovers, outdated product lineup, and boring engines), the brand is losing out on its aspirational value. The allure & aura that Jaguar cars had in the 2000s & before is missing today. Iâm sure a lot of BHPians will agree when I say that Jaguars used to make drool-worthy cars, but not anymore.
End of the day, great products can resurrect iconic brands (Rolls Royce, Maybach) or take them to an entirely new level of volumes (e.g. Porsche). I firmly believe that the brand "Jaguar" can become really strong again on the back of exceptional cars. But it needs an awesome, relevant product line for that. As they say in the automotive industry, there is no problem that a good car cannot solve.
What are your thoughts on this? Is Jaguar walking right into another pitfall? Or will the âRise from the Ashesâ strategy put it back on the map?

Jaguar has introduced a new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine, which will power the 2018 XE, XF and F-Pace. The company claims that this new engine will provide enhanced acceleration figures for all cars.
The new 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine develops 296 BHP and 400 Nm of torque, while being mated to a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic gearbox. The current 2.0-litre petrol engine from Jaguar is available in two states of tune - 197 BHP & 320 Nm and 237 BHP & 340 Nm.
According to the British automaker, this increase in power and torque outputs of the new Ingenium petrol engine has helped the engineers to cut short acceleration times of all three models. With the new engine, the XE sedan has a claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration time from of 5.5 seconds, down from the 6.8 seconds of the current model. Similarly, the 2018 XF sedan will be able to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in a company-claimed time of 5.8 seconds (for the AWD model), while the F-Pace performance SUV will do the same in 6.0 seconds.
The new 2.0L Ingenium petrol engine has already been introduced in the three models in the United Kingdom. Jaguar is expected to introduce the new engine options in the India-spec cars as well by the end of this year.

Jaguar India is planning to launch the second-gen, 2016 XF sedan in September, as per recent media reports. The new XF was showcased at this year's Auto Expo, where the manufacturer confirmed that the launch will take place in the second half of 2016. It will be the second product launch from the British automaker, after the XE sedan, and will be succeeded by the launch of the F-Pace SUV in October.
Powertrain options on the 2016 XF will include both diesel and petrol engines: a 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel rated at 177 BHP and 430 Nm of torque, and a 2.0-litre petrol that churns out 237 BHP and 340 Nm. Both these engines will be mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic unit that will send power to the rear wheels.
Cosmetic changes on the outside include a wider front grille, new headlamps with LED DRLs and a redesigned bumper. The rear gets reworked LED taillights that look similar to the ones offered with the XE. It will also come with a new alloy wheel design and dual exhausts.
The second-gen XF will be offered in three trims: Pure, Prestige and Portfolio. The diesel line-up will get all three variants, while the petrol engine would not be available in the entry-level Pure trim.
Once launched, the 2016 XF will compete against the Audi A6, BMW 5-series and Mercedes Benz E-class.

Recent media reports suggest that Jaguar is planning to launch the refreshed XF sedan in India in the second half of August 2016. At this year's Auto Expo, the British automaker had revealed its plans to launch three new products in the Indian market. The XE sedan launched at the Auto Expo was the first of these three scheduled products.
The 2016 Jaguar XF is based on a new platform, which helps it shed 190 kg of weight as compared to the model it replaces. With a length of 5,067 mm, the new XF is longer than the outgoing model, while the wheelbase too is stretched by 51 mm.
On the outside, the new XF gets a wider front grille, new headlamps with redesigned LED DRLs and a new bumper. The rear gets new LED taillights that look similar to the ones offered with the XE, a spoiler integrated on the boot lid and dual exhausts. It will also come with a new alloy wheel design.
Powertrain options would include both diesel and petrol engines. A 2.0-litre diesel is expected to churn out around 177 BHP and 430 Nm of torque. The petrol engine will be the same unit that powers the current-gen model, a 2.0-litre unit rated at 237 BHP and 340 Nm. The only transmission option available will be an 8-speed ZF automatic unit.

Tata Motors owned Jaguar Land Rover has issued a recall in the United States in order to fix faulty airbags. This recall affects around 1,00,000 units of the outgoing Jaguar XF sedan sold in the US.
The Jaguar airbag recall is a part of the massive recall drives that are currently underway globally. Takata, the largest supplier of airbags, has been found guilty of producing faulty airbag inflators that might emit metal fragments in case of a crash. This can result in the airbag getting torn and thus can cause injuries to the occupants. Around 13 deaths and 100 injuries have been reported due to the aforementioned faulty airbags.
As a result, many global automotive manufacturers have recalled over 35-40 million cars in the US. Automakers like Toyota and Ford have already parted ways from Takata as their airbag supplier. This has resulted in huge losses and financial crunch at Takata's end.

Thanks to the Team-BHP fan (he prefers to remain anonymous) who sent this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with fellow enthusiasts!
2 CKD Units of the 2016 Jaguar XF, codenamed as the X260, have been imported in India for R&D purpose. Records on Zauba show that two new XF models, each in petrol and diesel, have been imported along with many parts of the second-gen sedan. These imports suggest that Jaguar India might soon launch the all-new 2016 XF in the country.
The 2016 Jaguar XF is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine, that churns out 180 BHP of power @ 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 431 Nm @ 1,750-2,500 rpm. This engine is mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox.
The petrol XF gets a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine, which is capable of generating 238 BHP and 340 Nm of torque. It comes with a 6-speed ZF automatic gearbox. A 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol is also on offer in the international markets, though Jaguar India is highly unlikely to bring this option here.
Built on an all-aluminium architecture, the new Jaguar XF is around 200 Kgs lighter than the models. The wheelbase has been extended by 51 mm, but the overall length has been reduced by 7 mm by limiting the front and rear overhangs. The XF gets boot space of 540 litres.
Changes on the outside are subtle, as the new Jaguar XF gets a redesigned front bumper, hood and adaptive LED headlights with the company's characteristic J-blade Daytime Running Lamps. The taillights too have been tweaked a bit, and appear to be inspired by the Jaguar F-Type. A blacked out insert in the rear bumper houses the dual exhaust pipes.
