Mahindra SUV order backlog stretches to over 2.81 lakh units

Mahindra has over 77,000 pending orders for the XUV700, with the waiting period for top variants being almost a year.

Mahindra has a massive order backlog of over 2.81 lakh units for its range of SUVs. This has led to longer waiting periods.

According to the company, the Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic have the most orders. Together, both models account for over 1.17 lakh bookings.

Currently, Mahindra has over 77,000 pending orders for the XUV700, with the waiting period for top variants being almost a year. As per the company, around 8,000 cars are booked every month.

Mahindra receives over 10,000 bookings for the Thar every month. This has resulted in an order backlog of over 68,000 units. The waiting period for the Thar RWD is around 15 months, while the 4x4 variants have an average waiting period of 5 months.

The order backlog for the XUV300 and XUV400 is 11,000 units, while the Bolero and Bolero Neo models have around 8,400 open bookings.

Mahindra has been operating its assembly lines at nearly full capacity. The carmaker delivered over 1 lakh SUVs between April and July 2023. It plans to expand its production capacity to 49,000 units per month by Q4 FY2024.

Mahindra receives about 48,000 new bookings, with 33,000 billings every month. Less than 8% of the orders are cancelled every month.

Indian Army orders 1,850 Mahindra Scorpio Classic SUVs

In India, the Scorpio Classic is sold alongside the new Scorpio-N.

The Indian Army has placed an order for 1,850 Mahindra Classic SUVs. This is in addition to the 1,470 units that were earlier ordered by the armed forces.

While the specifications of the Army version are unknown, the SUV is equipped with a four-wheel drive system.

An image shared by Mahindra reveals a batch of Army-spec Scorpio Classic SUVs ready for delivery. The SUVs are painted in a shade of green and are fitted with silver 5-spoke alloy wheels, fog lamps, side steps and roof rails.

The Indian Army has also expressed interest in the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. It could replace its ageing fleet of Gypsys.

Mahindra Scorpio production surpasses 9 lakh units

The Mahindra Scorpio was introduced in the Indian market in 2002.

Mahindra is celebrating a new production milestone as the 9,00,000th Scorpio rolled off its assembly line at Chakan, near Pune.

The Mahindra Scorpio made its debut in 2002. Last year, the carmaker introduced the latest iteration of the popular SUV - 'Scorpio-N'. Today, it is sold alongside the Scorpio Classic.

The Scorpio-N carries forward the rugged body-on-frame architecture. The SUV comes with two engine options: a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with 198 BHP / 380 Nm and a 2.2-litre diesel producing 173 BHP / 400 Nm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

The Scorpio Classic is powered by a 2.2-litre Gen 2 mHawk diesel engine that produces 130 BHP and 300 Nm. The engine is said to deliver decent low-end torque of 230 Nm @ 1,000 rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.

Mahindra Scorpio Classic mid-spec S5 variant launch soon

The Scorpio S5 will be positioned between the base 'S' and top-spec 'S11' variants.

According to media reports, Mahindra is all set to introduce a new 'S5' trim of the Scorpio Classic. It will be positioned between the base 'S' and top-spec 'S11' variants. Dispatches of the S5 variant have already commenced, however, Mahindra is yet to announce the pricing.

The Scorpio S5 comes equipped with 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, black ORVMs and roof rails. The SUV gets body-coloured bumpers, body claddings and side steps.

Like the base variant, the S5 trim is also sparsely equipped. It doesn't get a touchscreen infotainment system and even misses out on features like automatic climate control and steering-mounted controls. Instead, the SUV gets manual AC with rear AC vents and side-facing bench seats in the third row.

Powering the Scorpio Classic S5 is a 2.2-litre diesel engine that makes 130 BHP and 300 Nm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, which drives the rear axle.

2023 Mahindra Scorpio Classic to get mid-spec S5 trim

The new mid-spec S5 variant will be positioned between the existing S and S11 trims.

Mahindra is all set to introduce its RDE-compliant lineup soon and that includes the 2023 Scorpio Classic. A leaked type approval document has now revealed more details of the upcoming SUV.

The Scorpio Classic was introduced following the launch of the Scorpio-N. At launch, the SUV was offered in two trims: S and S11. It is now expected to get a new mid-spec 'S5' trim. That being said, the Scorpio Classic range will include a total of seven variants offered in 7-seater or 9-seater configurations.

The new mid-spec S5 variant will be positioned between the existing S and S11 trims. It is expected to be offered with steel wheels, halogen headlamps, central locking, an audio system and electrically adjustable ORVMs. This variant is also likely to get safety features like dual airbags, seat belt reminders and speed alerts; among others.

Under the bonnet, the 2023 Scorpio Classic will carry forward the same 2.2-litre diesel engine updated to comply with the RDE norms. In its current configuration, the engine develops 130 BHP and 300 Nm and is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.
