My preowned Porsche 911: Giving the lights a makeover & other updates

For the front headlights, which are insanely expensive, I am going to attempt the lens replacement alone.

BHPian androdev recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Today is the RHD version of 9/11 (Nov 11). The day began with an early morning email from DHL informing me that the Porsche parts I ordered would be delivered today. Awesome!

eBay also joined the party and sent me an email to let me know that they've shipped the parts!

In the spirit of Diwali, I have decided to give the lights of my Porsche a makeover. Some irresponsible detailer during the previous ownership had run the polisher on the lights resulting in horrible scratches on the lenses. I tried to get them corrected but it was of no use - plus the front lenses also developed weather/age related fade and cracks - due, I'm sure, to outdoor parking. Porsche parts are so uncomfortably expensive to buy and I am sure, except for me, nobody notices or cares about the scratches and fading. Eventually I decided to pull the trigger as I couldn't put up with the sight much longer and did not wish to be reminded of that donkey who ran the polisher over the lights.

Tail lights and floor mats have arrived - pretty smooth delivery experience including customs, just took 3 days end to end.

For the front headlights, which are insanely expensive, I am going to attempt the lens replacement alone. Have read a few success stories on the internet and decided to order replica lenses from eBay. Hope to update this thread once the full sparkling new look is achieved.

Other than this "Diwali" makeover plans, it's been business as usual.

Painful darshan every six months:

Had a good Dasara break (@Sri Lanka, our first visit):

Happy Diwali to everyone - have a blast (or not!)

Toyota-Suzuki working on small sports car with 1.0-litre engine

Toyota could price the small sports car competitively between US $16,500 - $21,000.

Toyota showcased a small concept in mid-December 2021 as a small sports EV. While no details of the sports car were revealed, however, speculations soon started that the Japanese brand could be working on a successor to its MR2. The concept car featured large air ducts, short overhangs, plenty of carbon fibre and reportedly a removable Targa top as well.

Now, according to new reports, Toyota is still said to be considering bringing the small sports car to the market. Reports state that rumours of a small sports car being developed jointly by Toyota, Suzuki and Daihatsu from a couple of years ago is still under development.

Reports go on to state that the small Toyota sports car will be powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine, producing around 120 BHP and 200 Nm. The sports car will also come with a mild-hybrid setup to provide a small boost, while also improving fuel efficiency. The small sports car will tip the scales at just 1000 kg while measuring 4,200 mm in length, 1,720 mm in width and 1,220 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,550 mm.

The new small sports car from Toyota will borrow its front suspension setup from the current-gen Yaris, while taking design cues from the Daihatsu Copen. The sports car will get a strict two-seater configuration only.

Toyota could price the small sports car competitively between US $16,500 - $21,000. No details of its launch timeline have been revealed yet though.

Did annual service on my preowned Porsche 911: Tasks done, costs & more

Even though Porsche says the coolant is for life, I requested them to change the coolant for which they got back saying it's absolutely not required.

BHPian androdev recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

2022 ended on a very happy note!

Messi won the world cup (and I was there in Qatar having a blast!). Things are improving with Barca, no more tears week in week out!

Our bougainvillea plant has decided to come out of hibernation - decided to capture the mood before anything ruins it:

Started 2023 by taking the car to VST Porsche for annual servicing. This is my 3rd service visit and each time I visited a different dealer Porsche facility (Friends automobiles - Indira Nagar Bimal Maruti, EVM Porsche Kochi - Whitefield Raja Skoda, VST Porsche - central Bangalore). The final bill came up to 997xx.00 - talk about coincidences! I got some goodies (new year season) - threw the candy and kept the basket:

Service included change of front brake pads and wiper blades. Previous owner gave me a set of front brake pad parts which Porsche agreed to fit (they had to order wear sensors and few nuts, etc.). They actually skipped some service items that I approved after inspecting the car. Estimate included spark plug change which I approved but they felt the change was not necessary as the spark plugs looked fine. They also sent work-in-progress pictures on WhatsApp:

Even though Porsche says the coolant is for life, I requested them to change the coolant for which they got back saying it's absolutely not required. I might insist for a change of coolant in future but overall I was glad they were not eager to rack up the bill amount. Ordering parts takes time and need to plan in advance but overall service experience is very good.

Here is hoping for a great 2023 to all of us!!

MG Cyberster two-door sports car spied testing

The MG sports car could rival the likes of the Alpine A110 and BMW Z4.

MG's first sports car in decades, the Cyberster, has been spotted undergoing testing. The MG Cyberster comes in the form of a two-door drop-top sportscar, which will go up against the likes of the Alpine A110 and the BMW Z4.

The spy images of the upcoming sports car showcase a near-production-ready model. Although camouflaged, the sports car carries forward design elements from the Cyberster concept showcased a few years earlier. The two-door coupe gets a swoopy front end, a light bar at the rear, an integrated spoiler and large aerodynamic alloy wheels.

Although the interiors of the sports car are yet to be revealed, it is expected to come loaded with tech and features. The concept even showcased a yoke steering wheel, which may make it onto the production model.

The upcoming MG sports car will come powered by an all-electric powertrain. While details of this are yet unknown, reports do claim that the sports car will have 800 km of range (NEDC cycle), while being able to sprint from 0 - 100 km/h in around 3 seconds. The sports car will come with both rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations.

The final version of the MG sports car will be available in both right-hand & left-hand-drive formats, making it suitable for multiple international markets. The 'Cyberster' name is unlike to be used for the final production model.

Took my 2022 Toyota Supra for hot laps at the Dubai Autodrome

At the second session, I had got well versed to the track, the Supra was being toyed around the corners and those 382 ponies were made to work.

BHPian Amey Kulkarni recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hey Peeps,

Last Sunday was exhilarating, fun filled with adrenaline and triumph. Special thanks to Aditya9567 for sharing the invite so that I could participate.

I relived my BIC moments from 2021 riding on two wheels to this one taking the Supra MK5 to the track.

Well, this was an event hosted by Pirelli and limited guests were invited and had to be an RSVP to confirm the participation. Aditya and I could register ourselves in time to clinch a spot. I was excited. Had been watching the track videos on YouTube to get a feel of the track and corners. Supra's running in was finished and couldn't have been better to hit a track day to push her legs.

The Day: Aditya and I were laughing over the morning coffee on how we causally got up and reached the track in just 15mins from our houses comparing to the circus I had to do for BIC back home travelling from Pune to Delhi, shipping bikes etc. It was a complete itinerary.

Registration: As soon as we entered the paddock, along-side registration there was a wide spread of breakfast offered as well. Although the track day was free of cost, it was very well organized, no expenses spared and safety to the maximum which was good to see. There was also a helmet counter on offer if one didn't carry or didn't have one. I initially though they'd charge for it but that was on the house as well. The helmets were properly sanitized and disposable balaclavas were provided to ensure hygiene.

Safety Briefing: Post the registration, we were made to attend the safety briefing of the track, dos and don't on the track, certain markers, significance of green / yellow / red flags etc. It was very useful indeed. A Keynote was to respect the Outlap and have a Cool Down lap before entering the pits. Generally, after hot laps the brakes are on fire and the cool down lap helps them relatively normalize before you come back in.

I had a fear of the track being overcrowded to cause safety issues and accidents, but I must reiterate by stating that the event was very well organized. The track was not crowded at all. The fellow drivers were responsible and didn't see anyone playing up their egos.

I'm guessing there were 50 odd cars ready to headout to the Dubai Autodrome "Club Circuit" is what we drove on; basically a 2.1 Km lap which is not a full lap however still technical and tests the cars to the limits at corners. We were divided into two groups and got three sessions 30mins each.

Green Flag: The sun was already scorching over the track with a slight cool breeze. The morning ambient temperature was around 28-30 degrees and off we went. I was in the first group and had to head out immediately after the safety briefing. This was my first time to drive a car around a track. The tyre pressures were adjusted from 33psi which was the normal setting to 30 psi for the Supra. Sports Mode ON which is the full attack mode wherein the steering, suspensions stiffen up and bull starts roaring with the exhaust flaps open. The first session was targeted to learn the track, observe the racing lines, braking markers in order to maximize the output and cut down on lap timings. It was nervy for sure and didn't turn off Traction Control just to keep myself in check. Back of the head you have a brand new sports car below you and no clue how she's going to handle the aggression. The session went well, didn't push to the limits as I had planned but was already waiting for the second session to commence.

The second session was right after group 2's first session which meant I had 30mins break in between. The brakes had already started showing a slight fade wherein you realize when the pedal starts going in than anticipated.

At the second session, I had got well versed to the track, the Supra was being toyed around the corners and those 382 ponies were made to work. I really wanted to see how every element of the car felt. The chassis is stiff but supremely agile, you point and she'll hit that marker. Body roll felt minimal and the acceleration with the Twin-scroll Turbo never felt lame nor sluggish, the power was available on the tap at any given point. There's torque everywhere in those 7K RPMs. There was a point where I could see myself closing up on the Cayman ahead of me at the pit straight. The braking was bang on. They're not grabby and infact progressive to the point that you start realizing how much peddle needs to be pressed for what amount of bite.

I completed 3 hot laps and was doing 2 cool down laps every session as I knew she was being pushed for the first time. But she never gave up on me.

At the third session, the sun was right up, it was closer to noon and the track was hot and throwing up marbles. I only did two laps and came in. It was plenty for us and the cars I guess , the brakes started fading and in the last session we decided to call it a day.

Summary: All in all, I must say that the Supra performed above expectations. At stock settings, she handled really well, the tyres were sticky enough, front 4 piston Brembos brakes had a great bite braking from 200+ speeds to 70 ish Kmph in a jiffy to a tough turn 1, change of directions also felt natural, the ZF 8 speed gearbox felt crisp as well. To point out the downside on the car, the suspension could be stiffer, and the steering feel could've been better as well. But that's why you have mods on the car to make it just right for the driver.

Overall, a satisfactory day and already looking forward to the next one.

My preowned Porsche 911 (997.2): 25000 kms up & loving it every bit

I also changed the wheels back to 19" to look the part. Past their prime but not when they are mine.

Crossed 25,000 KM. Was worried I would forget to take a photo when the ODO hits the milestone but managed to remember this time:

I probably should not mention global warming in a 911 thread, but given the way it's been raining in Bangalore every other day I guess it's happening! Dussera cleaning ritual could not have come at a more opportune time:

I also changed the wheels back to 19" to look the part. Past their prime but not when they are mine - feel them still, lol!

Honda 2-seater sports car leaks; could be an EV

The new compact sports car could be a replacement for the to-be-discontinued Acura NSX.

Images of a new Honda-badged compact sports car have leaked online. The spy images showcase an unidentified 2-seater sports car completely undisguised, featuring a Honda badge at the front.

As seen from the leaked images, the sports car comes with a strict 2-seater configuration. It features a short front end with large air intakes & slim LED lighting, a glass canopy for the cabin and flared wheel arches housing stylish alloy wheels.

There are no details regarding the powertrain, with reports suggesting either a mid-mounted engine or an all-electric power unit underneath. Reports also suggest that the new compact sports car could be a replacement for the to-be-discontinued Acura NSX.

Earlier this year, Honda had confirmed to be working on two electric sports cars, one of which would be the successor to the NSX.

Upgraded from a Porsche Cayman 718 to a preowned Jaguar F-Type V6 S

I haven't had as much fun in a car before. The exhaust has a beautiful note, and no Youtube videos will do justice to what it sounds like when you're in it or around it.

BHPian kashesh recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I've previous owned a 2020 718 Cayman, Last year I've bought a M340i and this year picked a (preowned) 2016 F-Type V6 S.

The 718 Cayman is a great entry level car, and you can have a lot of fun with it. I still haven't driven a car that handles like a Porsche does. It's pretty tight and fun, but that 2 liter engine is quite a turn down. During my ownership experience, i've kept believing that 2 liter is adequate for Indian roads, and nobody could change my mind back then. I've read through a lot of threads here that how much of a let down 2 liter is and I kept thinking to myself that it's not. The Cayman has great appeal too. The curves are just timeless and it grabs a LOT of attention.

After a great deal of research, I got a M340i. You know, power and practical mix. It's a sleeper car, but it beats everything on a flick of a switch. I love the low profile look, and I think the 3 Series is a very handsome looking car. I look at it every time i park it, and i smile every time i floor it. I can drive with my family around with plenty of space for luggage. But it doesn't even come close to handling like a Porsche does and I don't even expect a 4 door to handle like a 2 door. But i missed that agility, and some what exclusivity.

And then I got a F-type V6 S. Simply put I was quite skeptic to buy a 2016 car in 2022, and that too a Jaguar. The reliability issues, and everything I've heard about JLR brand and then going that way just didn't make sense to me. But the car was driven less than 10k, recently serviced, and well-kept. and then I am not so much of a convertible fan. I've also written in the past how the attention of a yellow 718 swayed me from taking it everywhere. So I wasn't quite sure of a red F-Type.

But I did buy it anyway. And it changed my mind on everything (love that about it). After my experience with 2x3 liter engines. I just can't go back to ever buying a decent car with a 2 liter ever again. And it is something that you have to experience yourself for you to realize. I will highly recommend that if you do go two door route, look for a nice one with a 3 liter engine in it. I think with the  M340i, if practicality is necessary, then go this way. If you don't plan on doing long trips, then a two door convertible is very much fun, especially with a 3 liter engine.

I haven't had as much fun in a car before. The exhaust has a beautiful note, and no Youtube videos will do justice to what it sounds like when you're in it or around it. It makes me feel warm and funny when you're climbing the RPM, and the burbles and crackles; it's just so much fun. And the power that the V6 generates, you can make the rear move each time you floor it. It requires some skill to handle when you floor it and that makes it even more fun for me. It's finally some justice for what I had in mind about a sports car. Everybody in my family loves it. And to put it simply, I owned the 718 for a year and put 800 km on it. It's been less than 3 months for the F-Type and I've clocked more than 1k km on it. I WANT to drive it all the time. Also, I found the fit and finish of interiors of Jaguar a lot more appealing than a Porsche. But we all have a different taste. I am honestly quite surprised with this whole experience with Jaguar.

Surprisingly, there's not enough mention about the F-Type here on Team BHP. But it's a car that I am keeping forever and I'd be happy to dedicate time and money in maintaining it.

Budget Rs. 1 crore: Need a fun car to add to my already diverse garage

We are a family of 2 + 2 (Young kids, 6 & 4), and if sanity were to be kept as premise of logical decision-making, we have more vehicles than the household needs.

BHPian mathranik recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

T-Bhp Fam,

Normally, when I am in the market for a new automobile, the use-cases and needs are very well laid out in my head. This time, though, it is different. Very!

Before the query, let me quickly lay the current garage out to rule out overlaps, at the very least.

2019 Porsche Macan R4 (With Sports Exhaust):

The car was primary until July last year, and has about 35k on the clock. With the new sports exhaust, it is the weekend-dose of fun that the streets of Ahmedabad typically allow in late evenings.

Also, pictured above is my 2019 Ducati Scrambler Icon, rendered useful only maybe 4-5 times a year - reflects in the 2k run on the odo.

LR Defender 2021 P300:

This has become my primary commute for about an year now, and also the highway cruiser-par-dream. It is specced well, and has pretty much everything you need in what is otherwise a car built for hardcore off-roading. I have had my share of fun doing that as well.

Toyota Corolla Altis J (Petrol):

This is the family beater, mostly consigned to the family chauffeur for errands, school & activity drops / pick-ups, and what have you.

Now, comes the dilemma. We are a family of 2 + 2 (Young kids, 6 & 4), and if sanity were to be kept as premise of logical decision-making, we have more vehicles than the household needs. But, that did not prevail. So, here we are, deciding on what to buy before the world turns electric and boring.

Budget: Sub 1-crore

Desire list: Not a large SUV, maybe a convertible, definitely a fast car (Say 0-100 in sub-6, if we can get one!) or luxurious for long drives, niche (Not seen all over the streets), should not overlap what we have in the garage

Don't-care list: Service network (As the car won't be driven more than 500 km / month), depreciation.

Options that crossed our mind :

  • Used Ford Mustang.
  • Toyota Alphard.
  • Mini Convertible Cooper S / JCW.
  • Mini Clubman / Countryman.
  • Merc GLA AMG.
  • BMW Z4 Roadster.
  • New Merc V-Class.
  • Merc C-Class Cabriolet (Not available as of now, it seems).

Good to note that the above list is neither comprehensive, nor sacrosanct. The idea of this query thread was to share with this fantastic group, the reasons behind considering a new vehicle (Not much really, but one that would possibly complete our garage), and to be advised in any direction!

We have also been looking at the option of building a caravan / camper on a mid-sized chassis, and use it for our long road-trips (1500km+). The kids would grow at their own pace, and hence the next 5 years need pampered and calm travel for them (in my personal parenting opinion).

Aim to close the purchase in the next two weeks - Happy to hear all opinions out.

Thank you, all!

Here's what BHPian TorqueMonster had to say on the matter:

Since you are looking for Z4s', and since you seem very happy with the Macan, why not add another Porsche to the Garage. I'll say you should get yourself a used Cayman or 911.

The new Z4 is a nice car indeed, but the driving dynamics a Porsche offers is more than BMW ever could.

The Vellfire (Afaik the Alphard is not sold in India) is easily a sofa on wheels, but unless you want ultimate comfort, just ignore it, it isn't that special otherwise.

The Mustang is good, but I just don't see the use recommending a car that ideally is an entry sports car abroad.

I'll just say that if you can go till about 1 cr, you should get yourself a used Porsche. Or even else, another good sportscar., be it from Mercedes or BMW or Audi. As you said, you wanted to enjoy something before electric cars come, so why not get yourself an actual sports car. You already have 3 cars which you can daily drive if you want. So yes, a sportscar should be ideally your priority.

Here's what BHPian Sahil had to say on the matter:

I think you should either go electric or full blown V8 territory.

Electric: You do not need another SUV but the only properly quick electric coming to my mind is the Volvo V40 Electric that does 0 to 100 in 4.8 seconds or so.

V8: A used mustang is a decent option but I would perhaps stick to a German. Used RS7 or previous gen M5,C63 AMG could be good options. RS5 would be a good option too if you want a V8 then previous gen but new gen is quick too but a V6, both in used options will be well within your budget.

Consider a remap on the Macan, top it with octane booster or high octane fuel and you will easily have a sub 6 second car.

Here's what BHPian androdev had to say on the matter:

My suggestion would be to keep it a 3 vehicle garage instead of adding one more car. You can always replace one or more of the cars with something better or different. Not sure how relevant my own learnings are, but here they are anyway in the order of significance:

  • Errand car: I was using Honda City as my errand car and accidentally ended up with a Camry Hybrid. Only then I realised how important it is to have a good errand car if one can afford it. An errand car is not necessarily a cheap car but something that can see a lot of rough usage with minimal running costs. Camry fits the fill. It is cheaper to run than Honda City. We also have a Corolla in the extended family and Camry is in a class of its own. [My apologies to those members who find me repetitively praising Camry all over the forum] .
  • Flagship car: The most outlandish and rewarding decision I have made as far as buying a car goes was to buy an S Class when my kids were under 4 years of age. My suggestion is to replace one of your cars with a "flagship" from the brand of your liking when kids are small. Don't have 3 mid-range cars however good and appealing they are.
  • For the thrills: You already have a Ducati. I don't see much point in spending a fortune on a sports car if you already have a nice sports bike. You can use it more often, will be easier on the pocket and so on. It's worth spending money on #1 and #2 above. Money spent on a sports car is just for vanity and a depreciation disaster.

Here's what BHPian Akshay1234 had to say on the matter:

Well you have 2 awesome SUVs in your garage. One which gives you almost sedan like dynamics, and the other which gives you off road prowess. What both of them cannot replicate though, is the absolute feel of a performance vehicle. Forget the vans, if you want a camper you can get the tent accessory for your Defender.

Since you have kids, I'm guessing you'll want a vehicle which can seat all of you. Check out the Mini convertible, it will give you some amount of thrills and drama in terms of sound, and also the fun of a convertible.

Apart from that, I would advise you to check out the A45s again which will be a great amount of fun.

If a hatchback is not what you are open to, then I would suggest the pre owned market, where you can get everything from an M5, to an S63 coupe (there is a beautiful example on sale with a dealer called Boys N Machines).

Here's what BHPian kashesh had to say on the matter:

Hey Mathranik,

My Porsche 911 (997.2): Benefits of 18 inch wheels & other updates

I am finding it easier and more effective to drop a couple of gears to alert other drivers to give way compared to the tedious job of pressing the horn.

BHPian androdev recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Switch to 18" wheels is turning out to be a great decision. I am being more carefree now and able to keep up with other cars on Bangalore roads ridden with potholes and bumps. With 19", I was driving more cautiously and still ended up with a damaged tire. The ride and rattle situation has also improved significantly. Looks department has taken a total beating but since I have decided to aim for old classic charm, it is not such a disaster.

It may sound strange but given the recent crazy increase of petrol prices, XP100 staying fixed at Rs 160 per litre seems like a favour from the Govt. I have no idea why XP100 price doesn't change like that of regular petrol, it has been Rs 160 since launch.

I am finding it easier and more effective to drop a couple of gears to alert other drivers to give way compared to the tedious job of pressing the horn. Vroom OK please. I was waiting at a traffic signal and the reversing lights on the car in front me came on. I paid dearly in the past due to absent minded drivers letting the cars roll back and reverse, etc. My natural reaction was to panic, but the car didn't move. I figured that the driver turned on the reverse camera to get a CCTV view of my car. Phew!

We visited a relatives place few days ago and their pet dog bit my son. It was a very mild bite without any cut/bleeding but we were advised to get the rabies shots. Four of them! Porsche ƎƆИA⅃UꓭMA to the rescue!
