The car looks great. Get the dash done up as soon as possible. The board itself will not be expensive. A Teak Veneer plywood is not that expensive. A good carpentary workshop with a jigsaw can cut it out less than 1 hour and a spray of coating - you are ready to go.

Ram, suffice to say if I were to have a GF, I'd have to look even harder to find of my taste- its easier to find the cars I like, trust me!

I luckily have been able to source out a person who could get me the original teak veneer for making the dash. Keeping my fingers crossed.

And now better still- one more OHH REE GEE NAL item that arrived for CAN in the post today! A dash headlight/light control switch!!
Just the right thing to light up my spirits when I came home this evening!

'thought of posting a few updates- I've been tending to some of CAN's needs lately.

I noticed, when I drove the car for the first long journey on the way back home from the 26th Jan rally, that the gear-lever felt kind of "sticky" like it was set in wet concrete! The gear changes were also not too smooth.

My mech., who was with me then, said it'd need a new bush kit.

Incidentally, I was also planning to change the lever itself as the one fitted on my car was tarnished, lost it's sheen. I had a better-looking spare with me, which I decided to fit. Also got a new gearknob (maybe a repro) which I'm fitting on the new lever.

'turned out the lever on my car had a fabricated, non-original bush made of metal instead of the original smooth nylon one. I suspect it was fitted by a previous mechanic who couldnt find the original in time or because the nylon bush tends to wear out soon.

The metal bush too seemed on its way out though!

It so happened that the bush on my replacement lever also was a similar metal one!
So the 'new' lever was taken to a lathe guy who successfully fabricated a correct-sized nylon bush using a tractor gear-lever bush, which was of the same shape (but oversized for this gear-lever, hence filed down to the right size)
And finally fitted on. The gears now fall normally. However, I had an intuition about the gear oil level, so on checking found that the gearbox hardly had any oil left!!

Luckily, I didnt ignore it and just put the gearbox cover back on!

So getting the gear oil to be put tomorrow too.










Also, a few more goodies I got for CAN in the last couple of months via ebay UK:

Yet another OHH REE GEE NAL ignition switch with key!! This one seems unused/NOS but am not sure.

'will be fitting when I have the dash remade as original.





A pair of used but good Lucas MADE IN ENGLAND tail-lamp covers, fitted only for the shows, which I did on 26th Jan!



And (although not pictured), again a used but good gear-lever gaiter, which I'll be fitting once the gearbox cover is back on, now that I have replaced the gear-lever.

Then, just came in today, 1 OHH REE GEE NAL door glass winder handle, again used but good...fitted it on my driver's door immediately and polished/cleaned a bit. One more to arrive shortly and then I'll have both door winder handles original!

Great to see more and more OH REE GEE NAL bits going on to the car But about the gearbox oil. The tail lamp covers look fabulous!! Only thing left is the original dash. Make a dash for it and get it done saar. Then she'll be 100% stock! BTW where are the trims for the tail fins?

The 2-door models surprisingly didnt come with those- considering they were UK-made CKDs! They dont even seem to have provision for trims to be fitted!

Whereas the Indian-made mk3 came with them!

Strange, this convertible has the trims fitted - WHAT'S NEW PAGE

BTW they do add some bling to the plain rear end , especially when Mark 3 Herald don't have recessed number plates.

Sorry my bad! I meant the 2-door Heralds assembled/sold IN INDIA.

Yes, I agree they do look nice...but I like the Herald's rear end regardless!

Well, if turned out that I was able to refill the oil only today......but all done, so aaal izz well!!

BTW, excuse the slightly mucky look there, need to clean up sometime!

Also fitted the original gearshift gaiter, but couldnt fit the new gearknob- turned out to be a cheap repro afterall, and disintegrated into 2!!

So using the old one for now. But glad the major work was done.

The other original glass winder handle came in today....but due to some strange reason I couldnt get the existing one off!! So it'll have to wait I guess.

The "toffee-tray" is very much original to the early (mk1) Heralds,which had fibreboard (a kind of cardboard) gearbox covers.

They are absent in the later models, which had metal covers. Hence your Herald, being a mk3, doesnt have it.

Back after quite long! 'happened to get some more 'minor' work done on CAN recently.

I now turned my attention to the petrol tank, which turned out to have a lot of rust/dirt accumulated inside and the rust particles were causing an obstruction in the fuel line.

So got the tank cleaned from inside- had it done very carefully, without damaging the external paint as I find it still good enough not needing a repaint.

So it was done as I wanted.

Meanwhile, I also bought a brand new replacement fuel tank pipe rubber grommet that fits in the fuel tank hole on the rear wing, the old one having reached the end of it's service. Also bought a new original gasket for the fuel tank sender unit that is fitted into the tank at the rear, but wont be fitting it on as yet as the float of the sender needs replacement (it seems to have a puncture and is getting filled with petrol, which it shouldnt) so I was told that once I have one and am ready to fit it for good, I can have the gasket fitted.

BTW, in case anyone requires, both the items were bought from 'Canley Classics', UK:

Finally had the tank refitted today, after quite a delay mostly because of my present health (recovering from a surgery so cant move around too freely until am completely 'normal'...which meant I've been stuck at home in my room for more than a week! 'happened to come out just today! ) which meant CAN also suffered a bit of neglect getting all dusty etc...so she got a dust n wipe from me.

I still need to fit a new petrol U-feedpipe from the tank (plastic) and need to fix one of the fuel sender wires, after which it'll be fully functional again!

Now here comes a new challenge- I'd got the clutch MC kit changed with a new one (GIRLING UK) recently but my mech. found that the clutch pedal wasnt working- went straight in on depressing! So on opening up the m.cylinder (again!), it was found that the piston inside has gone...ironically after the cylinder was rebuilt with the brand new kit! :sigh:

'will see if a new piston is available else will try fabricating one (made of metal) but thankfully nothing wrong with the kit!

Hope you recover soon and be back on track in no time Shyam bhai. BTW any pointers on what type of surgery you underwent. Anyways Good to see some update on the car. Car's coming close to originality in bits and pieces. I really wish you and your car both recover soon and enjoy those long pending weekend drives.
BTW i really liked those retro oil tins, period.
