The ergonomics are really poor & I am sure I won't be comfortable with that, even if all other things are kept aside or ignored.

Highspeed handling wont matter to me as rarely it would see three digits. My comfort zone is 80-90kmph on highways. I drool over the looks. Seating position, ergonomics are important to me. Next is rear bench comfort as it would be mostly used as a highway and long distance vehicle.
The TD - as has been said by Lohith and blackfire_9 - can be a gamechanger. I just hope it is not, but, but.
As I said earlier there would be lots of ifs and buts - the journey has just begun.
Hope to get behind steering wheel of Xylo and Bolero this Saturday.

Re: Mahindra bolero vs Tata sumo grande MKII

Very true, many felt this can be the second option, why i considered bolero was due to its size and the tough built but if the occupants are not comfy then whats the point

As a primary vehicle, I would also say now that the Safari or the Scorpio make a lot more sense.
Sumo C4 is a very promising vehicle, the only down side i see is the looks and that can be taken car by changing the wheels.

Yes, due to the increase in demand of the new Sumo Gold CR4, the priority is given to Gold instead of Grande.
The Sumo Gold is received well by its market it seems. With its new CR4 engine, its becoming a good value proposition for the market it serves.

Re: Mahindra bolero vs Tata sumo grande MKII

Update here
I had registered for the Bolero test drive on the website about 10 days back. I was supposed get a TD last weekend. No call from the dealer. I called back on the dealier's number on the website, and the lady on the phone told she is not aware of any such request for me. She asked me to give my number to her, and she would call back. Currently, it seems, there are no TD Bolero's available :(
BTW - basic question, sorry to sound naive - is Bolero available in 4x4? There is no info to suggest this on the website.

I had also seen Safari GX last weekend and I am getting one tomorrow for the TD. Will update the thread after that. Have asked the SA to get the Grande also, if available.
Also, is Grande available in 4x4?

Re: Mahindra bolero vs Tata sumo grande MKII

Hi Advait, None of the vehicles you mentioned in the post are available in 4X4. The only one available with 4X4 is Tata Safari VX and it is also available only on order and you cannot cancel it once you are through the order. May be if you can wait and like Tata Safari Storme, it too will be available in 4X4 provided you like its looks.

Bolero by no means an excellent vehicle, but the only issues is which you have already posted previously, it doesn't fit in any of the parameters. Very bad ergonomics, steering is placed very high, no thigh support and very less leg space at the rear if your driver/co-passenger want to relax and push their seats back. I had very tough time to convince my family members to go for the Bolero. I even promised them to modify the interior with new seats from Xylo and pushing the back bench a little bit back after removing the last row seats.

We had many people who were very much convinced with Bolero, even with these negatives but ultimately landed with another vehicle. Such Lohith went with Safari and I had my budget stretched for XUV. I think when you do TD of Bolero/Safari I suggest you do it with family because in the long highway runs, I don't think Bolero can give you the comfort that a Safari/Grande can give. Also I think Tata is producing Grande in very less numbers.

But no doubt, looking at the Bolero sales chart is really amazing. It does 9000 which some of the premium diesel hatchbacks are struggling to do.

Re: Mahindra bolero vs Tata sumo grande MKII

Update time : I TD'ed Safari VX on weekend. Its just fantabulous. The amount of space and comfort it provides to driver and passengers is just amazing. Its available in 4x4 only in VX trim which is way above my budget. I also read threads from other Safari owners, and ADC's thread justified for normal highway and some bad stretches 4x4 is not really required. It does its job well on two driving wheels. I am convinced. GX or a variant below fits the bill for me perfectly. Only thing I will miss in GX is reverse camera which I can get fitted after delivery.

Now time for Scorpio and Grande TD. Thats in the weekend of 2nd March.

vrrraju - Thanks and yes, I got to visit the dealership again and they told the samething about Bolero.
Again, thanks to Mahindra dealer - I could not even see the Bolero, so TD is out of question.

I got the same feedback as you gave from the SA, Bolero is not a family car and the back bench offers very limited comfort for family on long drives.
I so much want to have Bolero but if ergonomics and comfort for my family doesnt work out, I would stay away. Why M&M does not make it a better family vehicle? I see Bolero sliding away :(

Re: Mahindra bolero vs Tata sumo grande MKII

Have fun, it took about 2monhs for me to decide and yes Bolero will come no where close to a Safari in terms of comfort.

I did wonder why you were looking at 4x4 option at all, i think adcs thread is a insight on how the 4x2 will be fine, and yes adc is sing the vehicle in terrains in which most of s wont be doing so.

Scorpio would tke the score when compared to Grande but when its compared with Safari then its other way, though i liked the way engine responds in scorpio but when you take it on bad patch you wont like it.

On the contrary, the CR4 is a big hit with the cabbies .. I see numerous eCS and eV2 cabs in Delhi these days.

I myself own a Aug 2010 eCS with the CR4 (23.05 kpl version), I must admit, I love this engine ! Great performer, very fuel efficient.

Cool, so after having fun at Rann with Bird now time to look for SUV fun.

Yes, Adc's and HVK sir's vehicle proves that you don't need 4x4 90% of the time however I have read some were that HVK sir says he could have went ahead with some places if his vehicle have occupied with 4x4, if you think that you are planning for such places then go for 4x4 otherwise 4x2 is more than enough.

Have you went through these threads, Scorpio is available as LX 4x4 which can fit in budget with less electronics as well.

Re: Mahindra bolero vs Tata sumo grande MKII

Thanks for the links Vishal.
Have read GD sir's review, will go thru the other thread now. Looks tempting.

I was almost convinced I dont need 4x4, but after tasting the offroading, I am leaning again towards that. Agreed I wont use it 90% of the time, but what about that remaining 10%? Now, that's some quandary.

Heart says something, wife says something, pocket says something else ...
Now don't compare this dialog with the famos dialog from SRK in Devdas...daru chhod do, duniya chhod do

But, yes, Scorp LX 4x4 looks a prospect. This is planned for coming long weekend. Anyways, I dont like OEM music systems and other gizmos on top-end are just for initial wow factor. I would be better off putting after market DVD player, reverse camera etc. Let's see. Will post (hopefully) next week abt test drive.

Yes, same here, at least your wife says something, when I open this subject at home my wife gives danger look and stop talking :P

Yes, I am too not a big fan of electronic gizmo however sometime they prove to be good because fitting after market means involvement of unskilled workers and tearing off the company fitment.

Waiting for your updates as our needs and requirement are 90% matching

Thanks,
Vishal

The electronic gizmos, at least most of them missing on the LX cannot be fitted outside easily however, the Scorp, in my opinion, is a much better vehicle without them.
Who needs rain sensing wipers, auto headlights, TPMS, factory fitted audio system etc when they anyway end up acting up on quite a few vehicles?

I d strongly recommend the LX 4wd to both of you if you are looking for a no nonsense 4wd reliable long distance tourer with reasonable off roading ability.

Yes the Bolero is available in 4x4. I got mine in February 2012 after booking in December 2011. Mine is an LX 4x4 - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-d...ro-lx-4x4.html

Thank you sir for advice, hope M&M didn't discontinue LX 4x4 it in short period.
BTW I follow your thread about used Pajero or Scorpio closely so definitely consult you all guys before taking any decision.

I started my day on T-bhp with your post. This is THE one to go for I feel.

I will closely follow your posts. Pls post on the AC upgrade. How much did it cost and what to look for while doing it aftermarket - configuration, brand, capacity. And importantly, effect of AC on the engine and pulling.

Update : I wanted to complete TD or Scorpio and Bolero this long weekend. But being a long weekend, my family had other plans. Ended up in Mahabaleshwar rather than M&M dealer
Actually that helped. Now I can go to the dealer with this 4x4 Bolero update.

Re: Mahindra bolero vs Tata sumo grande MKII

Update time :
Bolero 4x4 is not available to "mango people" (aam aadmi) as per Mahindra dealer. So there goes my Bolero 4x4 dream. Nonetheless, I could get a chance to sit on driver's seat of Bolero.

I am really disappointed with M&M. My feedback for Bolero.
I just drool over the looks of the vehicle. That was THE strongest point to draw me towards it. But except for that, rest all was disappointing. For my needs, I wanted a vehicle which would have
--> capability to take on rough roads occassionally. Yes, Bolero would score so well here. May be at par wtih others, may be better; I am not sure.
--> fit the budget initially and not too hard (economy-wise too) to maintain in long run. I am going to keep the vehicle at least for 7-8 years. This is where Bolero would score more than other contenders. But that's not the only parameter.
--> carry my family with comfort - good ride quality, seating comfort and space, AC, cubby holes to keep waterbottles etc... Rear bench was better in Nano in terms of leg room. AC was just ok, and noisy. And it's not a 7-seater as M&M would have us to believe. I can't even think of passengers on jump seats on long drives. Jump seats are strictly for 4-5 km ride, not good for highways.
--> ergonomics for the driver i.e. me. BAD. I cannot comment more. I am disheartened.
--> comfortable ride during my long journeys to home or for vacation. It would be around 10 hours of journey one way, and Indica has been doing this for last 5 years so well. But I am not sure with Bolero - when it comes to comfort factor.

Bolero was a big let down, except for the first two parameters. Like others mentioned in earlier posts, they were swayed away after TD just like me for these parameters primarily.

Why can't Mahindra improve ride quality and comfort in Bolero for family use with ruggedness? Isn't that a winning combo?

I am away from Bolero.
So that narrows down to Safari GX with ABS (I wish I had money to buy VX) or Scorpio LX 4x4 or SLE with ABS or Grande GX. Have to TD Grande and Scorpio. I am still not sure if I really need 4x4, after reading a dedicated thread on that topic.
I am having fun in the dilemma.
