Focus is on the ball, it would bring life to the image if focus is on eyes ! Good you mentioned its son, with the long hair I thought its a girl :)

Left hand covering the face is a bit distracting IMO. I would prefer the one revealing full face.

The face is OOF, should have used a higher f stop if you wanted the ball in focus. left side of the kid is over exposed, and the light is very harsh.

@Shaju, C300 and Pramod - thanks for the input. I will try with a higher F stop , the problem i have is my model does not stay still long engouh for me to make changes. He wants to run up to the camera and see the output once the click sound is heard :)
Will keep trying

That means he is a perfect kid by all means ! Do the settings before you point the cam at him. A higher shutter speed will freeze the moment, aperture is anyway to decide how much of DOF you want in the entire frame. In the above shot, I think an ISO-100 at f/8 would bring the exposure perfect, just assuming as I dont have any clue about the light source. My 2 year old never comes sharp unless I am shooting 1/200 or above. As soon as she hears the 'click' sound, she will tell me "lemmeesee" (let me see..) :)
Took the K-5 and 31mm out for a stroll yesterday evening. Steep learning curve involved to extract maximum out of the new gear.
Both these shots hand held at ISO 1600 and 800.
