I'm looking for my first DSLR to start with! If I get a reasonable deal, a better lens can be bought with the money saved and start my lessons.

Your 18-55mm Kit lens goes for about 2k . So you can pay about 14-15k. Btw what better lens are you planning to buy?

Canon 400D Spot metering

I was googling for how to achieve the spot metering for my Canon 400D which does not support the spot metering. And I come across the below site where it hacks the 400D firmware for spot metering. Would like to know if anyone has done it before?

Firmware hack Rebel XTi /400D enables ISO 3200, Spot metering! - Canon Digital Photography Forums

Thanks Shaju, I informed him to decide on the final price and let me know.

Thanks MileCruncher. I am an infant in photography to talk about lenses but all I know is my first lens should be an all purpose lens to learn things. I might be stupid, seen Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM retails for 16K in market. Not sure whether it has a Macro capability since I love shooting Macros. I'm not worried as many gurus are here .

Nikon D90 with Nikkor 35mm F1.8G

After a LOT of deliberation (between 550D and D90) I have finally made up my mind (sort of...almost...) for a D90. I plan to not take the kit lens (i.e. 18-105) and infact buy a Nikkor 35mm F1.8G with it. Any comments/feedbacks/suggestions from the illuminati are welcome.

Also, would much appreciate it if anyone can advise what is the current street price for the above combo in Delhi/NCR - both with bill & warranty (after the standard discount) and without bill & warranty.

Furthermore, would be great if someone could advise any dependable shops in Delhi/NCR to buy the above, where I can get the best deal(s).

Thanks & regards,

Hey Shaju,
Any idea on what is the difference between the 50mm f/1.4 G and D lenses?
The G costs almost twice to that of D.
Cheers,
Deepak

The G lens doesnt have an aperture ring and focus is via a silent wave motor. The D lens has an aperture ring.

The G AF-S lens is a newer model allows manual focus without your having to use the M/A lever on the camera. it also has a better anti reflective multicoating (Nikon super integrated).

I guess the cost difference is due to AF-S and not because of G/D.

maverick. why not try the D3000? unless you specifically need some feature on the 3100/5000?

I know it may be uncool to buy discontinued product but you probably will get it a great price and it is not a bad camera for a newbie (I just bought it a month ago)

My take would be to go for Nikon 3100 if you are looking for a fully implemented video feature. Else, the Nikon D5000 would do good.
For a first buy, D3000 is a pretty good buy but lacks the live view mode which might help the beginners.

Yea exactly the only thing which is stopping me from buying D3000 is unavailability of live view feature.

Any idea on current price of D5000 and the new D3100 ?

Its rare that someone sells his prime lens. I saw one ad in BPC last week, one guy was selling his entire Nikon collection (with 2 primes and few zooms), and it was to buy a bike I remember inviting him for a weekend walk couple of times (flower show in August), but he never turned up. Now I understand his mind was in bikes than shoots.. LOL
