It's difficult to get the trip planning to work. May be you can use Google Earth for this purpose. Still I am not fully sure. Need to dig more to find out.

re: Sygic India GPS Navigation

followed one of their feedback to user comments & renamed the sygic_mmi folder (instead of deleting it). It is now downloading the essential resources and required maps. I am not going to download the maps all over again

re: Sygic India GPS Navigation

I have downloaded Sygic India with MMI maps on my Samsung Tab 2. Google Maps are the most updated maps without any doubt even to the extent that I have found the updated highway numbers which have been updated on any other software. Both sygic and google have good coverage in the remote areas in North East.

My Use

I select my route on the google map on Tab 2 and from the options I copy the map for offline use. Thereafter I select the "Navigate to" option in Google Map which asks for option of software for navigation and I select as "Sygic". A wonderful way of using google map data for navigation by Sygic.

I use an iPhone and am quite happy using google maps along with the 3G network for navigation. I am however stuck in remote locations or at locations mobile connectivity is not good enough.

I have been looking for a navigation app to be used in my iPhone which can work off line. Tried downloading sygic but could not successfully install. Does this work well with iOS or is it that I have not figured it out correctly? I find that India is not listed under "Asia"

I also read in this thread that sygic is now free. Does this really work well or a paid app is better?

"Sygic and mapmyindia" is now available for INR 1900/- at the apple store but the reviews are not encouraging at all. I prefer continuing to use my phone rather than buying a navigation unit for my car.

mvp, you can do the following on your iphone, especially if you are using ios7.
1. Go to google maps and navigate to a particular city or area on the map, where you expect to pass through duing your trips.
2. type 'ok maps' in the search bar located above and click on the search symbol.
3. The phone will cache the area of the map displayed on the phone.
4. Sometimes you might get an error if the map area is too big. For that you will have to zoom in to reduce the area of the map.
5. The map will now be available offline even when there is no mobile connectivity.

Happy navigating offline!

The google map will be cached locally, however when you start the trip it still tries to connect to the internet and if it is not able to you cannot proceed. So this caching too leaves you stumped.

Try this, cache a map, switch off your data and wifi connection.
Are you still able to get google maps to show you online navigation ? The problem is to set the destination you have to go to the Search box, and that does not proceed without a connection.

Hi Fillmore,

The offline caching can be used only to see where you are located on the map. It will not help you search or do anything without an internet connection. I have tried using offline google maps in iphone and it will show me where I am on the map. I won't have voice guided navigation though.

I think it's good enough as long as you don't need active navigation help. If you just want to keep track of where you are heading to and whether you are not on the wrong track, the offline caching in google maps works perfectly fine.

re: Sygic India GPS Navigation

I use Sygic MapmyIndia app on my iPhone every time I drive out of Bangalore and have found the app to be very stable and accurate.

I have one question though - I always find the speed readout on the app to be always about 6 to 7 kmph lower than what the speedometer shows. And I have tried this on many vehicles, so it is not that one particular vehicle speedometer is wrongly calibrated.

Has any one noticed this too? If yes, what possible explanation could there be for this anomaly?

Thanks in advance!

It is not an anomaly. What you see on Sygic is your 'true' speed .
ALL speedometers have a margin of about 5% - it will always show a higher speed than what you are actually doing. This margin is increased further should you upsize beyond acceptable limits. Here is an old thread discussing this - http://goo.gl/P8Yu59

re: Sygic India GPS Navigation

What's the download size of the maps ? Is it for all of India or statewise ?

I see 44M as the size listed here https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...sygic.aura_mmi

Ideally, you should be going in for Sygic India Free download which is around 39MB to 45MB which is only the application. Once the application starts for the first time, you are given the option to download for one or more individual states. For Maharashtra, the size is around 112MB. Along with it you might have to download additional resources around 35MB.

The total full app should come to about 700MB.

re: Sygic India GPS Navigation

Downloaded Sygic India free version and maps for south india. Planned a route yesterday and Sygic estimates the journey time to be 8+ hours. Mapped out the same route on google and estimated journey time is around 4 Hours. Has anyone faced similar issues with Sygic time estimates?

I think no point looking at travel time estimates. Better to go with details furnished by fellow members. I have never used these estimates myself.
