Upgraded and everything aok for now, only difficult part was the downloading of 244MB file :P Mine is a non jail broken phone.

Most evident difference is the contacts, they have become real snappy. no its not coz of restore since i have been using the phone for last 48 hours plus.

Few questions answered here:

1.) IPSWs are not different for Mac and Windows. they are the same. For iphone 2G the firmware is: iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore and for iPhone 3G: it should be: iPhone1,2_2.2_xxxxxx

2.) You dont need ti upgrade to iTunes 8.0.2 for upgrading your phone to 2.2. Its ok to have iTunes 8 or 8.01 or 8.1 whatever

3.) If you are stuck in DFU or recovery mode, press both home and power button for upto 30 secs and it should work. Otherwise try the old Ziphone 3C to kick out of recovery mode. Mind you: DFU mode and Recovery mode are not the same

4.) If you are still not able to kick out of the recovery/DFU mode, keep the phone connected and iTunes will detect it in the recovery/DFU mode. Then do a restore of your phone. If you have downloaded the IPSW on your computer. Click Shift + Restore and point to the 2.2 firmware.

5.) Better dont try custom IPSWs for 2.2. Do a original 2.2 factory restore and jailbreak using the Dev team Quickpwn 2.2-1

6.) If you want to run your hacked apps on 2.2 and dont want to do the SSH stuff to crack/hack the mobileinstallation file, do these simple steps: Go to Cydia and add this repository: Welcome to Cydia.hackulo.us!. Now install MIPatch and restart your phone. Now you are set to install hacked ipas thru iPhone.

Best of luck...

What's the terms and conditions for unlocking after one year?

I am looking for an 'Legally/Official Unlocked 3G iPhone'. Are they available in India?
Where could I find one in Mumbai or Pune? Any trusted resellers anyone can recommend?
Must be genuine official unlocked. No turbo sim or other methods.
Thanks

You just need to show them your bill which will prove the age, then they will give you an unlock code. Plonk in a diff operator sim and punch in the unlock code. This is the process used.

3G unlocked not yet available, try Australia, Belgium, Italy and France for the same.

Any updates on the non-3g phones that upgraded to 2.2 ?

Have the hanging/lagging issues of 2.1 been resolved?

Yes its holding well, no contact book lags yet, which is the first thing one notice under regular usage. I had a wierd battery drain issue, but i restored the phone once and thats resolved also.

Thanks Jaggu for the info.
Have Airtel put this info legally anywhere. I don't want them to change the rules halfway through the term and I am stuck with a locked handset.
I asked at my local Apple store today and they told me only locked handsets are available.

No issues so far, jus the Caller ID stuff (the 09 and +919 stuff) I thought I had it fixed! "my wife called and the number showed instead of the name and I go 'Hi this joe how can I help?' and she goes "oh so your iphone is busted again????" .
Well during the pawnage I added only 'Open SSH' nothing else, maybe that helps too!!

There is a crack for the Caller Id available in Cydia.
Try downloading that. Helps a lot.
