Not a 'massive difference', but the phone works more like a phone now. It holds on to signals better (still not optimal) and 3G sessions seem to last longer than before. In other words, it is getting closer to what a phone should be in the first place.

I think I forgot to mention that he was upgrading from 1.1.1 ver
Must have felt a massive diff, cos I was just parroting what he was saying

I also think that you need iTunes 8 if you want to sync to the computer. I think otherwise you can install the custom firmware using 7.7.x but it wont sync. I might be wrong, though.

Not, much of difference in application performance, but after jailbreaking and cydia previous version of firmware used to eat the battery faster, this version seem to work sensible and able to give lot more in the same situation. Even the triangulation feature of google map is working more accurate, this may not be because of firmware, but because of google data collection, but still it has improved a lot on this version.[I have older iPhone not 3G]

Brain Tunner app on AppStore[Free]

Guys, I am not sure if you people have downloaded and installed this little application called Brain Tuner, if not give it a try, first of all its free and its fun, it has 3 level, 20, 60 and 100 random simple mathematical problem and we have to do it right, for each wrong there is negative mark. Its real fun to beat our self each time you are done on time front. The best part is even though its addictive but its not something that is going to harm, but it helps to play this game on regular basis. If people have already downloaded please let me know the timing, I was able to hit 20 in 16.7 sec, I am struggling to go past this timing.

Nice. Unfortunately, maths is my weakness. :(
Some other apps that I use are
  • Shazam ( identifies music over wifi and EDGE )
  • Stanza ( book reader)
  • dTunes ( music player with option to download tracks )
  • MxTube ( video player with option to download media )
  • GRiS ( Google News Reader )
  • YouNote ( Note taking app )
  • VoiceNotes and SpeakEasy ( Voice Recording apps )
  • Wordpress ( impressive blogging client )
  • a2z pro, units, converter ( converter apps, but not as good as the old converter in 1.x firmware )
  • MobileChat, IM+, Palringo ( IM apps )
  • Dynolicious ( already mentioned somewhere in team-bhp )
  • Snapture, Cycorder ( camera and video apps )
  • PocketTouch ( ipod controller when phone is in pocket, very useful )
  • OfflineMaps ( stores Google Maps offline, faster retrieval next time it is used )

A few games too
  • Pool
  • Enigmo
  • Dizzy Bee
  • Monkey Ball
  • RSSooccer09
  • Audi A4 (didnt like this much)
  • Funky Punch Lite
  • StarWars: The Force Unleashed

Also use Lockdown, Categories and Winterboard, so I think some apps are hiding

Find myself reading books at night using Stanza, instead of playing games. It is quite nice. However the new Starwars game might change that.

@Mods, should we start a new thread to discuss / review iPhone apps or just talk in this thread itself?

great set of applications, I just want to add one application from my side it's Funambol, it's a SyncML client that allows you to sync you contact from Internet server, as I use 2 phones N95 and iPhone with 1 SIM, I needed this feature, it's allow you to sync contact without needing PC/Mac. To use this please visit http://my.funambol.com and register, now you have everything you need change your mobile at will and get synced in few seconds, provided you have Internet on phone. Nokia and other phone already have built in sync client there you just have to enter the setting but for iPhone download free Funambol client from AppStore and done. Hope this help to people who change there phone too frequently.

Pramod - My current best timing for 20 equations quiz is 15.9 seconds right now. Will post a screenshot once I find some time to improve on it.

Funambol is nice!!! I was going to sync with Google but that would have involved wiping out the existing contacts. This is a better method
Took about 10 mins to sync 100 contacts. I think the contact pictures were the reason it took so long.

Thats great timing, however I try I am not able to beat by 16.7, but now at least I have a target of 15.9, will try my level best to come near to this timing.
Funambol is better because you don't need extra client to sync for all other mobile device expect iPhone, but you get a funambol client there, there are multiple options available on funambol, you can download funambol client for Nokia for emails syncing also. Best part funambol server is open source, anybody can host there own server too.

So I upgraded to 2.1 on windows and jailbreaked it as well

1.) I was on pwned 2.0.2
2.) Updated to 2.1 original firmware and my phone remain unlocked though i lost my jailbreak
3.) Used the BigBoss method to jailbreak my phone after degrading again to itunes 7.7
4.) After the jailbreak, upgraded iTunes to 8 again

And now I have a 2.1 iphone: unlocked, activated and jailbroken with all apps working and no issues backing up / syncing with itunes 8. I am loving it.

However I dont see any improvement in Signals...

It amazing, 14.4 means a lots, your hand-eye-brain coordination is excellent, seems like you are going to get in range of 10 sec, I am still struggling to go past 16.7, I need to start playing more so my hand eye and brain get in sync.
