re: The Home Theater thread

Hi all,
I own a Yamaha RX V667
Looking for speakers for quiet sometime.
Have auditioned JAMO and Klipsch - Was not up to the mark for the cost they sell
Next stop was polk and Wharfdale.

Can anyone suggests which is the best model which will go with the AVR?
I don't have a big budget- older models/ package speakers also are fine/ may be I would opt to buy in stages if unavoidable.
Please give your suggestions experts.

I have Wharfedales 9.5 towers, 9.0 CC, SW150 sub, WH102 surrounds paired to the Yamaha 667. Liked the Wharfedales for the warmer sound as compared to the polk audio towers. The other towers I liked were the KEF IQ5.

I was also thinking of the same speaker package.
Please share - How much you bought it for, from where, and when ?
My budget is limited so older models are better choice i think.
Which model on polk did you audition?

re: The Home Theater thread

Who sells Wharfedale in Bangalore? I am looking for matching speakers for my Denon 1612 AVR.

What other options of speakers available under 40K including sub? Any other brand recommendation under this budged? Regarding Jamo, I heard mixed review and many says those are not good for music.

Check HECO Victa from Germany. Amazon.de ships entire package for EUR 40 to India. You can get it auditioned in Bangalore at AudionVision, Kormangala. Whatever review available, people appreciated its performance.

Towers: Heco Victa 701
Surrounds: Heco Victa 301 or 201
Center: Heco Victa 101
Sub (If you want): Heco Victa 251A

5.0 Package from Amazon.de would cost you ~33K including shipping to your doorstep.

re: The Home Theater thread

Hi All! I have a query. But let me first tell you about my setup.

TV-Samsung 40" Full HD LCD.
DTH-Tata Sky+ HD
Home Theatre- Artis 5.1ch system (don't know the model number because it was bought around 5 years back).
DVD Player- Samsung H1080R Full HD DVD Player (This won't be used much as I don't have any HD-DVD's).
Blu-ray Player- Sony BDP-S380.

I know that the home theatre is an entry level one but I'm happy with the overall sound quality, atleast for now. So I wont be upgrading it anytime soon.
Now for my problem-
Tata Sky+ HD and Sony Blu-ray player both have digital 7.1ch audio out. But my home theatre is already connected to a standard DVD player which has 5.1 analog out. So I will be needing an amplifier.
It should be such that it should take 3 digital HDMI inputs (from the Tata Sky+ HD, Sony Blu-ray player, and a PS3 maybe after a while) and give the audio out to the HT (through analog).
I have shortlisted an Onkyo TX-SR309 which retails for around 20k.

Is it a good buy, keeping in mind my requirements?
Should I be looking at amplifiers from Harmon/Kardon?

And sorry for the long question.

re: The Home Theater thread

Had a question related to buying a new receiver and reusing existing speakers. I have a 4.5 year old basic Philips 5.1 HT System (Dont have the model number handly, it is a model with rear Tower Speakers and HDMI out.

Now I want to replace the setup and get a good receiver. Based on what I have read in this thread, I believe I can reuse the speakers of the Philips system with say a Yamaha/Onkyo receiver. Is that correct?

One other confusion I have is that the speakers of the HT currently connect to the back of the player with the small square connectors (sort of like the LAN/Telephone type connector-Sorry, I dont know the proper AV name for this). From what I have seen, in the AV receivers, the wire connection is a clip-on/screw on type.

Question is, can I still reuse speakers? If so, how? Do i just cut the connector off and then clip on the wires directly to the receiver?

re: The Home Theater thread

^^There is a small possibility that your speakers are of 3ohm impedance, as is common with small all-in-one HT systems.

Such speakers are not advised to be coupled with receivers, which have a minimum impedance specification of 4 (very high-end AVR) to 6 ohms.

If they are higher than the AVR's minimum impedance, your assumptions about connecting them are correct.

Why would you want an expensive solution to a simple problem. You can use a 3 Way Optical S/PDIF TOSLINK Audio selector switch with your digital out devices and if your HT has a analog and a single digital port, this will work.

Thanks for the reply! Could you please elucidate? How does it work? My HT supports only analog inputs.

What will be the price and where can i source it in bangalore?

Since i'm sure the Samsung DVD player doesn't have an amplifier, I'm assuming that the speakers you are using are amplified. And the inputs to the speakers are by means of 6 independent decoded inputs. How will the 309 solve your problem? It does not have 5.1 pre-outs.

I can think of two possible solutions -
1. Get the 309 plus a new set of speakers and get rid of the Artis, OR
2. Get the 309 and figure out a way to power the 5 Artis speakers with the Onkyo's power amplifier (shouldn't be hard at all), thus bypassing the Artis on-board amplifier. Only the subwoofer pre-out will be connected to the Artis.

The optical switcher suggested by dadu won't work since you say the Artis only has analog inputs.
