Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Well, I'm now on the "Need a OnePlus One Invite" bandwagon too

drmohitg,

My guess is that the phone isn't checking for an internet connection as much as it is checking to see if it can reach Google's servers.

Does your home wifi sometimes have trouble reaching Google / Gmail etc, despite the rest of the web working fine?

One possible quick-fix i can think of is changing your DNS (preferably to google DNS in this case - 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4).

Maybe you could do that on your phone itself and see if that helps?

Go to your wifi settings and then choose advanced settings. Disable "avoid poor connections". This should fix it.

Guys, any wake lock detectors that work on KitKat? Something is keeping my phone awake all the time, need to find out what it is.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

@DrMohitg.

There was this discussion in XDA which i was following. Cant get that thread for some reason. But solutions suggested included

- Changing channel in your wife to use anything below 10
- Changing an option in wifi settings to use only 2.4g if u have a dual router.

The problem exists if your WIFI channel is 11 and above for some reason.

They are also working on a fix apparently but that will be secretly rolled out as we all know.

The OnePlusOne is amazing piece of hardware for the price and beyond! The build quality and feel is actually as good as the reviews exaggerate.. Waiting for the official case to be available.

I do not have this case. I just got the original clear case delivered today. I bought this from Ebay India(@999/-). Was just checking for different accessories and found this and then your post. Hence, posted it. Thanks.

I guess I'll settle too!
So I need a Oneplus One invite! Does anyone here have one to spare?

anyone esp in chennai who has a case they like? I'd like to have a look at other cases. I want to be really sure of what i buy for the wife
I bought myself this one (In black color):
http://www.amazon.in/Original-Leathe...dp/B00QVMAYZM/

Using it and happy with it. The inner case is the soft PU material which covers all edges and looks ok. The flip cover is icing on the cake and is of reasonably good quality (Though it doesn't feel/look like real leather. More like art leather). The fit/finish/alignment is proper.

The screen protector that came with it was horrible. Didn't use it.

PS: I wish they offered the bamboo finish case here

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

@DrMohitG

My wifes nexus problem got fixed by changing the auto select of frequency to 5gzh. Also the wifi channel is set to 8 now.

So far the problem seems to be fixed. But only time will tell.

I am sure google knows the issue and may offer an update soon.

After Xiaomi, one plus faces ban in India.
Micromax complained to the High Court in the capital that OnePlus was infringing on its country-specific exclusivity agreement with Cyanogen, whose OS will feature on Micromax’s YU brand of devices, which is slated to launch tomorrow.

And we're at the mercy of advertising and corporates again. I mean, what is this stupidity in the name of copyrights etc! First Cyanogen pulled the carpet from under OnePlus - no ethics there. Then this.

Let me too join the 'OPO' invite bandwagon. Does any BHPian have an extra invite to be shared?

I am shocked. Reinforces the view that strong copyleft licence terms are essential to protect free as in मुक्त् software.

The case micromax brought about is service exclusivity and not about the source code licencing terms.
Even if the code is copyleft ( as in Linux Kernel) that does not exclude the possibility of other trade agreement infringement.

To make the point clear let us assume that suppose you are a customer of pure Linux Kernel using u-boot and open source drivers available on Linux trunk that is zero added software even outside scope of COPYING.TXT file.

However you for some reason need an external party to compile / build and install the images on desktops and thus you enter an exclusive arrangement with a service provider XYZ ltd. that it will build the binaries and do install for you and for no one else in a geographical territory.

Now if suppose XYZ.ltd does same job of download source files , build and install for me in same geography then XYZ is violating the trade agreement with you. And you as agreeved party can move to court to stop violation of the exclusivity agreement.

The case which Micromax brought is of similar nature.

Copyleft licenses such as GNU GPL do not cover other aspects such as patent grant or service terms.
However if you look carefully at Apache V2 License which google uses for Android it is not strong copyleft but it has a clause for patent grant.

Thus Google or any other contributor distributing source under apache v2 can not sue user of the code for the patent violated in it. Where as in GNU GPL and LGPL you can create code and still demand patent royalty.
Best example of this is MP3 Codecs , Fraunhauffer institute Germany has patent on MP3 but it gives out a LGPL lib of the codec. If you productise using MP3 you need to take license from Fraunhauffer.
