Obviously as lens reach becomes longer the cameras becomes less pocket-able.
navin I am only focusing on covering portraits and something at less than 50mm should do.

Was looking at the Nikon1 J1 Mirrorless , any thoughts on this ?

If you are never going to change the lens then why not the Canon G1X (it is expensive though somewhere near 40K) but the G15 might be just a bit over at 30K.

If you want a leans change option a bigger option is the EOS1100 or Nikon D3100 with a 50/1.8. it works out to 80mm on the APS-C format but 80mm is nicer for portrait anyway.

If mirrorless is your bag then the EPM1 or EPM2 (Pen Mini) from Olympus might be a better option than the J1/V1.

Sony RX-100, @ 30K, the best. Exceptional image quality and Exceptional video quality.

Good catch. Forgot about Sony. Many sites rated it the camera of the year for 2012.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Geez guys, this is the mirrorless or EVIL thread. Stop talking about P&S here.

Riju, you are familiar with the kind of photography I do and the kind of equipment I had. I have sold my E3 dSLR and all the superb lenses, and re-invested that into mirrorless. In fact, the money I got from selling old equipment fully covered the new gear, still some left over. All my photos you have seen on FB in the last 6 months are from mirrorless camera.

For photographers like you and me, mirrorless is not the backup system. It can be the only system. Think about it.

Now i recommend the X-E1 again. . This is by far the lightest and may be slightly slowest camera yet fantastic output. Will post some pictures from this soon. The camera lens combination is so small that my canon system looks so huge.

For for little bit less (or lot less actually) you can get the Sony Nex-6 that is also excellent! XE-1 is good but very expensive.

If I were in the market for a mirrorless today I'd get the Nex-6.

Also as of today, there are more lens options for NEX than the Fuji X!

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Received my 50 mm F1.8 e mount lens. Compared to the Minolta, I get pin cushion correction, auto-focus with touch, but most importantly, the optical stabilization.

But still, the Minolta is like driving a manual drive compared to an auto in the Sony e mount lens.

Sony with it's cropped version:

You can add Nikon P330 to the list.
It is much sanely priced (16K) compared to Canon s100/110, and shares all the useful specs.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Sony has just announced the successor to the multi award winning RX100 called RX100MKII .
Also announced is the RX1R which like the D800E doesn't have anti aliasing filter.

The RX100MK2 is first camera to have a BSI sensor in a sensor has large as the one in the RX100/Nikon V1 .Sony is saying a 1 stop advantage compared to the RX100 and 10% improved AF speed in low light.
It also features a tilt LCD and Hot Shoe which can also support OLED EVF and other Sony accessories.

Image resource has said they have seen the biggest improvement i from removing the AA filter compared to any other camera.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

If there is a race for smallest then Pentax Q7 is there but of-course makes no difference to me as not available in India.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Guys
I think part of my color tint problem is due to the default poor color performance of the monitor out of the box.
Is it possible to calibrate the monitor without a hardware colorimeter just by following somebody else's web instructions on gamma, brightness contrast settings etc that has been setup for best reproductions using a colorimeter?
Or is there some place that rents out a colorimeter in Bangalore? I dont want to spend so much to buy something I will only use once a year.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

I have a problem with the 45mm f/1.8 lens. I cant take portraits with the subject even half-reclining or leaning back and with everything from head to knee (or toe) in focus.

Here is a food sample taken standing over the table. How can I overcome the shallow DoF of the f/1.8 lens?

Thanks
