re: The Renault Captur SUV. EDIT: Launched @ Rs 9.99 lakhs

Spotted 2 Capturs testing in Vellore town!
Snapped from a moving autorickshaw.
I've tried my best to get a shot of the central console and fascia!

Duster, Creta, Vitara Brezza & Eco sport--All 4 of these got the SUV stance and "look" right without actually being one. In the Indian market the SUV looks seem to matter a lot, hence I do not see how the Kaptur is going to pull it off.

re: The Renault Captur SUV. EDIT: Launched @ Rs 9.99 lakhs

^^
That's correct - The Kaptur looks like a crosser and not a SUV which is a big disadvantage to begin with. On top of that, the interiors looks as bad as the Duster and the engine options are the same as the current Duster. So, why would someone pay more than the Duster which doesn't even look like a 'SUV'?
May be Renault knows something which us mere mortal can't figure out.
The mid-size crossover-SUV segment is the hottest in the Indian market know and it will be so in the near future as well. We need more competition to the likes of the Creta to make sure that the consumer is not taken for a ride by the likes of Hyundai but the Kaptur seems like a damp squib even before the launch

Duster at least has a 4x4 version. To that extent I can give it some score. But Kaptur does not seem to have any presence and at best looks like one over grown hatch. Need to see how they position it in the market.

Upcoming Renault Kaptur caught testing at Vellore. Projector headlamps, DRL, LED tail lamp, LED stop lamp, 18" alloy wheels, Rear wiper & washer, Chrome exhaust pipe tip, Side mirrors with integrated blinkers can be seen.

Old style radio antenna is a sore though. Even Nexon comes with a Shark fin antenna

This is for sure going to turn out into one another car from Renault which Heart loves and Mind hates, Just like the Duster now. Duster is such a driver's delight but interiors and build quality makes the mind scream out loud not to buy. Not to say keeping aside the pricing and after sales.

I believe, tomorrow's price reveal of the compass will decide this cars fate. From whatever I have seen so far, I wouldn't pay a penny more than 15 lakhs OTR for the top end

If this means it would be priced a bit over the top end Creta, I feel Renault is being optimistic (to put it mildly). Going against one of the segments top sellers at a higher price speaks volumes about their confidence.

If Renault thinks they can price the kaptur above creta and make a success out of it then they are living in a fools paradise. For how long will they survive on kwid

Absolutely, the Captur is a Duster-class vehicle for the urban setting. The European-like exterior and neater interior set this car apart, but there is no way in hell people will pay top dollar for this car.

The statement would however be right if the Captur is priced concurrently with the Creta 1.4 diesel which ranges between 9.7-11.9 lakh (ex-Delhi). I think Renault should price it on par with the Duster else this is going the S-Cross way. I am eager to see how Renault goes about positioning the second-gen Duster when it is ready for use next year. Will they be forced to take something away from it to keep the Captur the more premium offering? Because there is nothing other than design that will seperate the two cars at this point, with Dacia/Renault confirming the utilization of the same platform for Gen II.

If Renault wants a true Creta competitor with big margins, it needs a bigger engine and at least offer the dual-clutch gearbox as an option on the Captur. I feel the K9K does not go well with a INR 15 lakh rupee SUV. Can Renault bring in the 1.6 dCI to India?

re: The Renault Captur SUV. EDIT: Launched @ Rs 9.99 lakhs

It is imperative that Renault launches the Kaptur at the earliest.

With the Jeep launch hype reaching a crescendo and the Creta still going great guns, the timing for an Urban Compact SUV has never been better.

As outstanding the Jeep is, it is a class above Creta and falls in the 20-25 On Road Price bracket for the diesels with the Diesel Automatic expected to be atleast 27 lacs OTR.

Except the Creta and Duster, there is simply no SUV offering Diesel Auto in the 16-18 lac bracket.

XUV and Hexa are full grown 7 seaters and do not come under the Urban Compact SUV segment.

Duster, as brilliant it is, has now gone old in the tooth and the interiors are a generation behind.

This is leaving just the Creta ruling the roost in the Premium Urban Compact SUV segment offering an Automatic in the 16-18 lacs bracket.

This is just where Kaptur needs to scoop down and take on the Creta. While it looks a bit rounded, it has the right Urban design and the lineage of the Duster (Brilliant Suspension) to take on the Creta.

Renault however needs to price it atleast 50k lesser than the Creta variant to variant to make a real dent.

Renault also need to equip it well. Apart from bling stuff like sunroof, rain sensing headlights it needs to have serious safety equipment - not India specific smaller airbags. With folks like Jeep showing the way, it's time to stop shortchanging Indian customers.

The XUV W6 and Creta are the only true automatics in this class. The Duster is not really an automatic. They have used AMT,which is pretty much a low cost solutions for hatch backs, which Renault has put in a 16 lakh car.

On this note, would like to add that the Hexa has a brilliant automatic, a torque converter at that!

IMHO, it has the best auto shifts in its class, having owned it for the past 2 months now.

However, was talking abt a 'proper' automatic in the 5 seater Compact SUV segment, where Creta stands alone.

Duster's Auto for the reasons quoted above, doesnt really cut it.
