This thread is nearing its three year anniversary. Anyone else feels *that* is the real problem?

Hornbill would be a micro-SUV (or whatever we are calling this form factor these days) and Altroz is a premium hatchback. They belong to different segments.

It's not too far off to think that they would be priced apart for differentiation though they can certainly overlap.
From what I understand, OEMs earn less in hatchbacks, more in crossovers. Though, it might not be the case here. We can only wait and watch.

Even if we call the HBX a micro-SUV, it ain't going to be a budget offering. Like I had mentioned earlier, features like cruise control or coloured TFT instrument cluster, do not point towards a budget price tag. The bare-bones entry variant might be cheap, but as we have seen, more people go in for mid or top level variants.

I think so too. Slightly below or above Altroz. It might as well be between the Altroz and Nexon.

There is bound to be overlapping. Even Altroz overlaps Nexon variants. People do buy top end Altrozes over mid level Nexons. It might be the same in Hornbill's case.

The HBX is roughly six inches shorter in length, 2.5 inches wider and 2.5 inches taller than the Magnite. I would not call them much bigger.

Regarding VFM, agreed, the Magnite-Kiger duo offer tremendous, hard to beat VFM. Even if the HBX comes with all the features of Altroz, it will be far behind in this front.

Don't give ideas to Tata. The HBX should be priced between the Tiago and Tigor. That is the correct positioning. Pricing it at or above Altroz levels means pushing your luck too much. It a small car. Its tall, but not as wide as the Altroz. Definitely should be sitting below the Altroz in the pecking order.

Altroz width is 1755mm without mirrors, HBX might be having fatter front fenders compared to Altroz. Interior width will be more or less same.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

This one is a much awaited model from TATA Motors which will join the ever growing competition in the compact SUV segment. While the Revotron engines sourced from Austria and TATA's safety ratings are gaining popularity, the jerky AMT gearboxes are not doing well, sadly. TATA should consider torque converter ATs or iMTs adopted by Hyundai for the HBX. Personally, I would not prefer a DCT because of the complex mechanism involved in such gearboxes and the high costs associated with them (The DSG gearboxes found in VW cars must be an exception since their lightning quick gear shifts and sheer refinement justify the higher price tag).

HBX would be Tata's entry level SUV. In order to keep the prices in check, HBX would mostly be offered with an AMT. As per reports, DCT could be offered in both Altroz and Nexon. IMO, pricing is very important for HBX. It should be priced in a way so as to pull in potential buyers of swift. A safe+good looking+affordable+SUV is what can nudge customers.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Looks like an unholy love child as a result of a cross between a Harrier and Nexon!

Looks very well proportionate for a car of this size

And Tata's efforts to design this gets more respect when you realize that other cars in same segment are Ignis and ugly KUV100 !

From the spy pics I guess we can expect a Tiago NRG with a Harrier style front .

If that's indeed the case , the Magnite and Kiger will eat it for breakfast on the sales charts , especially if Renault Nissan ramp up production capacity and dealerships in Tier 2 cities.

Well Tata preferred to launch the Safari before the HBX. So that pushed it away to mid year, now with the pandemic it could be delayed more.

I feel it has to do with the camera angle and the fact that theres no other car to compare. I agree the profile does look Tiago-ish but it should be very different in person. Just check the figures below;

The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV-hbxcomparo.jpg

In comparison with sub-4m csuvs out there;

The HBX is widest in class, it is only marginally shorter than Brezza!

Wider and taller than the Nexon!

In comparision to CSUVs a segment (or two) above;

The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV-hbxcomparo2.jpg

It is wider than the Creta and seltos too!

Height is equal to Creta!

So the conclusion is, either the dimensions provided by Autocar is incorrect or it includes the ORVM area and maybe the height inlcudes the carrier displayed in the expo. But if it doesn't, we will really need to wait to see it in real life to understand its road presence.

No, the dimensions aren't incorrect. The car is indeed wider than the Nexon.

Start from 1:20

Later in the video, Pratap Bose also confirms that the door to door dimensions of the production car will be same as the concept.

*COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC*
Please have a look at 2:02, too where Karthikeya tries to compare dimensions with the Swift. It goes like:

Karthik: In terms of wheelbase, its on par with the swift. In terms of length, it's longer than the Ignis and KUV100.
Pratap: Yup, and you know, the other thing is that it is Global NCAP compliant.
