re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

BYD Seal
  • Stunning design, makes you want to buy a sedan in this UV era. Even non-automobile folks like my wife taken a moment to drool at it.
  • Made Hyundai-Kia EV offerings look like a joke.
  • With Tesla nowhere in the horizon. This is the closest we can get.

Close competitor: MG Windsor

Barring the quirky design and usability factor. This fellow has a positives to go with it. Gave Tata the Fewikwik moment in the budget EV segment.

Those who did not get the Fewikwik reference, here is the relevant ad

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Dzire.

I personally feel that this car marks an epochal moment for Maruti, where *finally* they have brought out a mass market car that has done well in crash tests. This only proves that they could have done so earlier, but they chose not to.

I expect this to sell like crazy in coming months, and also have a cascading effect on their other car sales. I'd wager that their market share creeps up steadily too.

It also helps that the Dzire looks actually quite decent and has a good amount of features for the money. It does seem underpowered, but that's probably enough for a city car.

If I were car-shopping right now, that would be a serious contender.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Most of my views are going to be purely on deductive basis, some of which I know also aren't gonna be true since they're inferences, but heregoes:

1. I'd the misfortune of sitting in the backseat of a 3 door Thar. A 5 minute ride led me to puke. I do know the Roxx has a much better suspension, but I can't fathom sitting in the backseat of one regardless. Therefore, can't vote for a car in which I'll be uncomfortable to sit in.

2. Punch EV: absolutely fantastic to drive. I went in with the thought of getting one as a second car, but being 5'10 with a very wide frame, I just couldn't sit comfortably in the driver's seat without my knees hurting. Had to change my driving position because of which not even a 5'4 person could sit behind without their knees touching the front seat.

3. Windsor EV: I've a Seltos currently. My 2 biggest issues with it are, ineffective AC in the rear seat, and pathetic ride quality. Windsor seems to have both. Out. A GREAT car otherwise.

4. Carnival, X-trail, the BYDs and Mini Cooper are irrelevant volume wise.

5. Basalt seems to be a fundamentallly sorted car- but has very little features IMO. If a 2013 Grand i10 can have keyless entry and go, I don't see why a 16 lakh rupee car in 2024 not have it.

Therefore, I think, the only plausible option, seems to be Dzire. A 5 star rated car, with all Suzuki pros. You don't NEED much more than that. It deserves to be the upgrade to people with unsafe Altos and Celerios, who wish to upgrade within Suzuki itself. A 5 star car which is fuel efficient, is a rarity. It therefore should be India's car of the year. Is also sufficiently spacious, and rides well. The only fly in the ointment is the engine+AMT.

P.S. would have voted for Amaze if it were an option, purely for the better engine, CVT, and the sheer value for money it offers.
P.P.S. Couldn't have become a BHPian (from a Newbie) at a better time, this is my 1st vote.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Not surprised that the Roxx is winning this easy but still voted for the D'zire. This can be the start of a game changing trend for MSL. Combine the 5* rating, the extreme user-friendly nature of the car and the service-network. At the kind of cost structure that MSL offers can make the whole of India start driving safer cars. Obviously much of safety depends on our driving discipline but this is an extraordinary start of a trend that I hope Maruti consciously percolates down to all of its models. The car offers everything that most Indians want. A reliable car, reasonable (not low anymore) cost of ownership, well-specced, just the access Marutis provide through the everyday garages being able to handle the repair, and now safety too! And they threw in a sun-roof for good measure.

It's just brilliant.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for the BYD Seal. A sexy car that gives a run for money to all it's competitors, ICE and EV alike. It has created a niche for itself previously not available in India at this price point. Moreso, that it's fun to drive quotient is pretty high combined with the minimal upkeep necessary. And we have landed with a very slick looking car with a mad engine inside it.

So glad that BYD did this and I can only hope we get newer hybrids and EVs with such a fun-to-practicality factor from other companies.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

First time in last 4-5 years timeframe, it feels like i took quite a few minutes to evaluate the contenders here. Means the new launches were just incremental upgrade rather than the revolutionary launches happened in last few years.

My Vote goes to DZire for:

- Best in class features
- 5 star safety ratings
- Deviation from swift styling

Second in the list could be Thar Roxx but knowing it's an evolution from Thar, did not earn my vote. Third choice could have been Windsor.

Voting for the Seal. Looks great, good performance figures, and relatively well priced compared to the other sports cars on offer.

The Thar Roxx would have won my vote if they had been able to sort out the ride quality. But, honestly cannot vote for a car that I cannot see myself buying!

I am not able to vote this time but if I had choice my vote would have gone to Maruti Swift Dzire . Its leaps and bounds improved version from its previous generation .It may not be wrong to say that its the car we see most on Indian roads as its widely used in Taxi/cab market. Its the car we all use if we are hiring a cab in city or on tour . So from doubtful safety rating to 5 star is really peace of mind for many commuters.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

I voted Punch EV. I am a big fan of the punch for its great ergonomics and styling though I prefer the older punch petrol styling to the new Punch EV style. It is a well designed car with immense practicality for day to day driving.

I would have voted for the BE6E and XEV 9E twins as well but I guess we have not had time to see it. Its strange styling and vulgar opulence hide some of the great qualities like RWD (a natural feature for an EV), interesting suspension and overall great drive train. These twins could be the pair that changes the Indian 4 wheeler market and could decisively push the mid segment to electrification. Maybe it can feature in the car of the year for 2025.

By this definition, I presume, half the cars in the list should not have made it there. (Maruti Swift, Maruti Dzire, Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor, Tata Punch EV, Mini Cooper S, Kis Carnival etc: none of them were fresh cars, they were either facelifts, cross badged versions or an electric version of an ICE vehicle).

If the above-mentioned cars have made it to this list, I am very surprised why XUV 3XO has not made it there.

All these are not just facelifts. New generations of old models. Punch EV is not an electric conversion of petrol Punch. It’s build on a new electric platform with a body of Punch.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for MS Dzire. It has got the looks, features, comfort, reliability, the right pricing and most importantly, safety!

Dzire getting a 5-star safety rating with a stable body shell is one of the main reasons, as it is a very big thing not just for the car but for the MS brand itself, which is the largest seller in the country. Maruti Suzuki finally focusing on safety and achieving what it has achieved is, for me, the biggest news in the auto industry in 2024.

Voted for Thar Roxx as it ticks many of an enthusiasts wish list. It is equally good in the wild and on city roads. Has road presence and creature conforts

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Maruti Dzire

Thar Roxx, MG Windsor are closely behind Maruti is what I felt. Although these have what it takes to be the Car of the year and I am sure Thar Roxx will eventually bag the title, I think Maruti Dzire deserves a place.

The main highlight is of course the safety rating which wasn't something associated with Maruti and the next one is the design. Ever since the Dzire came into the market, it looked like something that didnt belong here because of the weird styling. Got worse with every new iteration. But now, it's smart looking with good features.

This will definitely ring Maruti's cash registers.
