The specs seem decent. Better than I expected anyways.
I still think they should have launched a Diesel. Many people, myself included would have been very interested in the car if it featured the 1.4 D-4D from the Altis.

I don't think people should go ga-ga over the 0 to 100 time. The Linea T-jet with much power power and torque does a 0-100 in 11 secs.
The Vento with 105 BHP does a 0-1000 in 12.1 secs.
SO, it is simply not possible for a Etios with a very modest 90 bhp on tap to do a 0-100 in 11 secs unless it is lighter than a WagonR.
The company can claim anything. Toyota hasn't created a break through engine. A 1.5 L engine producing only 90 BHP is pretty lame. The ANHC with similar capacity produces 118 BHP odd.
And forget 18KMPL, lighter cars with smaller engines like Swift also do not give anywhere close to that figure.
So, please wait for the road test from Good auto mags before jumping the gun.

And I believe the specs are as modest and lame as the design of the car and puts it right in the budget sedan category along with Logan/Manza/DZire. The only reason is would sell is 'A Toyota sedan at 5 lakhs or so' - which is a big enough reason for people to queue up at the Toyota showrooms.

Well no matter how it looks , the price looks good. Todays article in Business Standard says it all.

"Etios, to be available in sedan and hatchback versions, will compete with best-selling models from the Maruti Suzuki fold — Dzire and Swift, the benchmark products in the mid-size sedan and premium compact car categories. While the Etios hatchback will cost around Rs 4.3-4.8 lakh, the sedan will be priced between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 5.5 lakh."

I am game for the sedan, might buy one if the prices are true.

+1 to that.

Very lame specs. For sure, they don't intend to compete with Honda City. I remember the Toyota guys at the Auto Expo mentioning that Etios would be competing against the likes of D-Zire, Manza, etc. 545 L boot sounds mammoth. I wonder if that too is an exaggeration like the FE and 0-100 figures.

Pricing would be interesting especially after the way Toyota priced the Altis D4D.

I got a call from a Toyota Dealer yesterday saying the On Road price in Bangalore should be Rs 8 Lakhs for the top end Petrol. Bookings are open he says with a post dated cheque ( Dec 2010 dated ). Launch date would be Dec 1st as speculated everywhere else.

err... @PCS , i didn't find any changes in the Etios site, including the specs of the cars.
And the ARAI figure doesn't feel great related to the real world as the real world FE is always 1-2km less than the ARAI figured. Why isn't there any other info related to the Etios, from the APS?
O.T- saw in ACI website that they have scooped the next gen Innova, anyone gor more news on it?

a Toyota Sedan for 6-8L. Anyway i look at it, this will be a huge success in the segment. I hope they can deliver 5000+ sedans a month and has the capability to service as many.

The way I see the pricing is the top variant of the hatch would be priced near the 2nd variance of the sedan. There will be some cannibalization, whichever way it is, it will ring the cash registers of Toyota India.

Hopefully, They should be able to deliver (70,000 units p.a + 10% excess) = approx 6,500 units a month.

Somewhere at the back of my mind, it is felt that the Toyota is under estimating the demand, similar to Fortuner.

IF the weight is less than a tonne at 960kg, it will be lighter than most hatchbacks, especially the premium ones.

Another thing is the 70k per annum capacity. Given that the two closest competitors in terms of price points Manza and Dzire sell about 7k and 9k units per month, the entire capacity has the potential to be gobbled up by the Sedan variant itself. Add the hatchback and we might end up with Fortuner like waiting periods or even worse, unless Toyota can quickly ramp up capacity.

All in all, it has all the makings of a winner especially if the rumoured price points are true.

So Toyota is not really looking towards the enthusiast - the focus is more on family! Good - since they look for space, boot space and mileage. Add to it Toyota's signature quality.

And as said, its gonna be competing with Dzire, Manza & Logan ! So looks not at all issue again ! But did Toyota overlooked the fact that atleast 60-70% of Dzire is from Diesel engines? If so 5000 sales per month will be a tough call. What I believe is they might be looking at 7000 units of hatch and sedan together, since its only petrol models as of now.

Note: At a segment they are really looking at, power figures or 0 - 100 timings just don't matter !
