The last sentence is not quite true. The Fords being marketed in India are also European cars (just like the GM Opels) . I have owned and driven both an American Ford Escort and an European Ford Escort, and the European one was way ahead in terms of drivability. Both cars, however, were far less reliable than the Japanese cars I have owned so far.

good point but that was a battery from my near by workshop.borrowed it just to move the car to the road.
also without the alternator working, the car wouldnt reach the service center which was 30kms away.
that was what i was told by a ford mechanic who came all the way from the service center with a new battery!

I think what he means by secondary battery is using a battery from another car to jump start his Fiesta. In that case, if the car stalled anywhere midway while driving to the service station, he would be stumped!

when my Zen's battery died, I remember two service station folks came in a scooter with a spare battery to jump start the car and one guy drove the car to the workshop for charging the battery and checking the alternator while the other followed in the scooter with the battery on the floor of the scooter. Thats the probably the first time i found more utility for the scooter than a bike. My workshop was around 8-9 km but they reached the service station without much problem. It turned out to be an alternator issue and it had to be replaced.

Maybe experts can comment: Even if alternator is not working, we could still drive the old cars as long as you don't stall and doesn't need horn/lights. Is it still applicable with the new gen cars that are controlled by microprocessors?

I saw a SX4 with no accidental damage on a flatbed near the NH-8 toll.

Maruti too uses flatbed for their cars.

Re: PICS : How flatbed tow trucks would run out of business without German cars!

Spotted 2 flatbeds in Gurgaon recently, both without any visible damage
1) Logan
2) Honda City : Was entering Ring Road Honda Sec 18 workshop as i was leaving it.

Looks like other workshops have taken a cue from germans and started using flatbeds. Good for the customer in a sense that it reduces damage due to towing. But all this must come at a cost, i suppose

I have never seen Maruti cars having the luxury of a Flatbed! Whatever the model, an Omni comes and tows it away!

I saw a white Skoda Laura bang in the middle of the road, BREAKDOWN, at the end of Gandhi Nagar flyover, little before IIT, Powai. The poor driver was talking on phone, most probably to Skoda! I could not take photo because of traffic.

Re: PICS : How flatbed tow trucks would run out of business without German cars!

Had to add my Fiat Punto into the list of flat bed towed cars yesterday. The car stalled suddenly when driving and did not crank up no matter what. Called FIAT roadside assistance and they sent a flatbed to tow it to Concorde motors Mysore road. After having had such a wonderful experience with my Punto for the past 3+ years, it was not a good sight seeing the car being towed by a flatbed. My 4 year old son was in tears saying "Papuchi Punto" (Poor Punto). Two days and FIAT service are still not able to locate the problem.

Re: PICS : How flatbed tow trucks would run out of business without German cars!

My Mar 2011 Figo had the luxury to be towed away on a flat bed!

One morning, the Engine Malfunction light started glowing while I was on my way to office, barely 2 Km from home. So, I returned and called up Ford. The promptly sent a flatbed truck to tow my Figo to the nearest Service station.

Neighbors were in awe, they were probably amazed seeing a nicely maintained Figo, with no visible external damage being taken away like a king

At the end, of it - there were reportedly no issues with he car. Link to my post here - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/offici...ml#post2873062

I witnessed a near replay of this incident on the evening of last Sunday i.e. Dec 23rd near Sardar Pav Bhaji at Tardeo junction. A pretty new looking white Laura on a flatbed on the side of the road. An agitated owner talking animatedly on the phone, presumably with Skoda service. A sympathetic but helpless cop trying his best to avoid a traffic jam (this is a busy junction with some flyover/footbridge work in progress)

Couldn't get off a shot with my cellphone or get the plates, because I was behind the wheel. As Laura owners, the missus and I quickly exchanged nervous glances as we passed the crime scene. No words were exchanged/said but the underlying sentiment wasn't missed..

Kiran - I hope it wasn't the same car we both saw. Or maybe it's good if we did. That's one car less!

Re: PICS : How flatbed tow trucks would run out of business without German cars!

Saw a Maroon Superb on a flatbed tow truck parked outside a building near Country Club, Andheri, a month ago. For the next 5 days, though the car was gone, the truck continued to stay there.

Wondering, if the owner had asked them to stay, till he was satisfied about the repairs that were undertaken (if any)!

Also, saw a White BMW X1 being towed away , around the same time as the above . This spotting was at SV Road, Andheri (W).

The reliability of Skodas makes me think that what you saw was a different one ;-)
