Re: PICS : How flatbed tow trucks would run out of business without German cars!

A black Bentley Continental GT (JH registered) has broken down on Malad Link Road. The car is parked near Hyper City with a note mentioning that the car has broken down and is awaiting a towing van to pick her up.

Re: PICS : How flatbed tow trucks would run out of business without German cars!

^^ Isn't it a Temp. Registered BMW?
The Number reads-KA51 TC 14 DEMO.

Is it being transported to other dealership branch?
I doubt it has broken down even before Proper Registration.

It's a demo car and wears the moniker of the BMW JoyFest. I guess they don't drive down their cars when these are transported to such events. Which makes sense because of the strict restrictions around the allowed kilometers on the clock before a demo car is needed to be sold off (at a highly discounted price) and replaced with a new one.

This is an unacceptable state of German affairs. What happened to the utter reliability of the past ?
The price of each component in these cars is at least 3 times that of a Jap equivalent and by simple logic should last 3 times longer.
I have a feeling that the Germans are losing the electronics battle in auto technology.

That is true. As long as the cars had no electronics, they were rock solid. Once they started introducing electronics they lost the game, even the Americans have better electronics.

The German cars drive beautifully but are full of gremlins. You have to live with it.

For a car to have some niggles and still keep running may be acceptable at times, but for a car to break down and leave the owners stranded is downright unacceptable. This is really poor reliability, poor engineering after paying so much for a supposedly top class automobile.

While a Maruti may also break down, it can be repaired anywhere, and would probably be able to continue the journey.

Isn't it strange that when Maruti entered the fray in the mid 80's, people complained about the high levels of Japanese technology and the issues about having those cars serviced by any local FNG, apart from availability of spares vis-a-vis HM and PAL cars. A case of the hunted turning to be the hunter.

Re: PICS : How flatbed tow trucks would run out of business without German cars!

We have two BMW's between myself and my business partner. An X3 and a 520d. Both bought new in 2015 September. I too had this worry about reliability of the german sedan's and frankly keep numbers of flat-beds around the cities where I normally drive.

However, thankfully both cars have clocked about 38K + kms and have been absolutely trouble free, except for two tire cuts on my X3.

My advice to fellow bhpian's considering german cars new or pre-owned will be:

1) Be extremely careful of where you fuel up. I have specific fuel stations on my regular roads and only fuel up there. I don't dare to fuel up in random pumps.

2) These cars are cheap to buy used, but service is expensive. So, please make sure you can afford the dealer service or have a professional proven independent garage with proper tools and expertise. I find many who think they got a deal on a used german car and then get a 5 lakh quote for repair. They are astounded and then take the car to the so called *German Independent* garages that are around and this becomes the graveyard for german cars that cannot afford the dealer.
