Expensive Service Became even more expensive.

This Post is in continuation of the earlier post, after completing the Timing Belt and Water pump jobs, along with a small bearing correction in a fan belt tensioner, what suppose to be a 30K job along with an oil change, I get a call from the garage stating they are hearing metal abrasion noises from the Timing chain side at Mid revvs, well could not risk it, asked them to change that also, overall the total damages os 51K. I am attaching a bill for more details, all work carried in Bosch Service center Delhi.

Please let me know if you have questions, this bill hurt.

Thanks - ML

Mama Mia, 51 K !

Pardon my ignorance, but is the timing belt different from the timing chain? You've mentioned that both got changed, hence my question.

Well this was a learning for me too, the VRS uses a chain and a belt, essentially the opposite side of the infamous timing belt, the noise as reported by the garage started from the chain side of things, the process was long as the chain uses an adjuster which was hard to procure and was the offending article in the procedure - pic attached.

Overall am told now I am good now. My other precautionary approach has been due to the car being remapped, and my love for revving in the mid and highs, that said the car is expensive to maintain from a parts cost perspective, and also is lots of fun too. Trouble with dichotomy, what can I say.

Timing chain, total rubbish, it has a timing belt, I think the workshop merely used the wrong terminology but he has done the right things

May be Ajmat it is called something else, its the opposite side of the Timing Belt, - it did look like a chain, so not sure if the claim is entirely not beleivable.

Please see the bill, it lists details for Timing Belt, Water Pump, Fan belt tensioner and specificly stated Timing chain (Set + Adjuster)

Oh my god ! these service costs are dampening my spirits of owning a octy rs

I am in search of a well maintained car but not sure where I will land up.

: That 50 K is equal to my two home loan EMIs !

Sad but true Abhi_abharth, the costs to maintain an Octy in top shape will cost you top dollars, but having said that, i still love the car, do expect to maintain it in the same way, it just takes one drive to forget all that.

This may sound like i am trying to make sense with my own head, but here is why, i am listing my major spends.

1. Clutch + flywheel at 63K on the ODO - costed around ~35K - Typical Mileage for a changes, i have seen some go at even 40K on the ODO - i would say driving style and some luck.

2. Remap + BOV+Ignition coils - 65K (Discretionary spend - Could have been avoided) ODO reading 73K

3. Tires - I do not recall exact cost my guess ~30K - I am not sure have to check the ODO i guess around 70K.

4. Timing Kit + Water Pump + timing Chain - 51K ODO stands at ~79K.

So yes expensive, its not going to be equal to Japs for sure, but the pleasure when you get behind the wheel is priceless, even if you do find something which has been maintained well, with time you will need to make investments to keep it in top shape.

Good Luck with your hunt.

80K Update

All - Its been a while i updated the thread, RS now has crossed 80K on the ODO what an amazing experience it has been, i have now decided to treat myself with a suspension upgrade, with about 50K budget what upgrade options can i consider, appreciate your feedback.

My Goal is to not lower the car, i am fine with the Stock ride height, but want to consider performance dampers and may be stiffer springs.

If members could suggest options (with cost implications) that will help me make an informed choice.

Thanks

Re: My Precious - RS1 - Skoda Octavia vRS. Now Remapped!

Cooleo, For VRS, check the internals, thats most important.

1. Check the service records
2. When was Timing belt & Water pump changed
3. Scan Electricals,
4. Check working of Headlights - They are expensive
5. Check underbody for Hits
6. VAC system & Glowplugs
7. Brake Pads & Disk
8. Ofcourse tyres - They are damn expensive about 9k per tyre.
9. Sun roof leakeage - Pour water into channel and check for leakage.
10 AC - Cooling coil leakage is common in Octavia

Immediate i can thing of these points. Rest experts can add...
If its a clean car, buy it, you will not regret...

Re: My Precious - RS1 - Skoda Octavia vRS. Now Remapped!

Thanks a ton for the heads-up v&v, much appreciated.

That's quite a comprehensive check-list, but hey, nobody's complaining.

Assuming that the car is in decent shape & more or less meets the above check-list, how much do you reckon the car is worth ? Keeping in mind the fact that it's an August 2009 model, with a single/first owner.

Apologies for posting here. I have a black VrS for sale too, KA registered. Indicative selling prices would be great!
