Thats quite a nasty hit. Restore the rocket soon to be back on roads.

By the way did you get an estimate for the repairs?

good to know all are safe, bad that it happened, but not your fault! Insurance will cover most of it though.
BTW on a side note, maybe we should post these pics on some threads where people are having a ball trashing hyundai build quality, calling it tin cans etc etc, maybe this will keep em quite! Considering the speed and the car that you hit, the damage looks less than if the car (getz) was not decently well built

Krishna- Yet to know the estimate as they didnt check the car before I left. Will be calling them up. I'm in bangy and the car in cochin.

Mohsin- Yes, I was also surprised to see so less damage after the impact. The damager was far lesser than when my Zen hit an Auto at a signal at 10kmph. By seeing the impact and damage on the Amby, I know the hit this time was pretty hard.

Damn!! Good to know you and family are safe. It hurts, physically hurts somewhere within to see the rocket in this state - I know how much you take care of her. But, like someone said, considering she hit an amby while braking from 80 KMPH, she has stood up to it. Do you have a picture of the whole car?

How did you deal with that rascal who attempted that wrong U? Did you file a FIR? Is he paying for this?

For one- The guy was drunk. Second he was very old. I didn't shout at him or hit him out of respect for his age. A police officer who came on the scene was also drunk and he wanted to arrest me for murder. An ant might have got murdered in this collision, but certainly no person was even injured, apart from my wife. He finally left me only because my wife was present. I understood that there was no use filing an FIR.

Finally after standing there for a long time, the old guy gave me 2000 Rs. I didn't want to a argue more and lose my temper.

Update- Hyundai guys are just taking off the parts now to see what all could be damaged apart from apparent things.

1) Front Bumper
2) Front head light
3) Left Side fender
4) Left wheel Lower arm.
5) Wheel

The service centre guy mentioned some central panel to be replaced and radiator to be checked, which I think is bullshit coz there was no visible damage to radiator. I checked it before I drove back to cochin. They might be trying to squeeze more money out of it.

My father is now going to service station to check out what they are gonna show as damage and see what estimates they give. Since the vehicle is more than 6 months old, I will have to pay 6% of metal parts and 60% of fibre parts as per them.

That's ridiculous! I have no words, Krish!!

In my experience in dealing with insurance, I have come to know that the Service center usually gives a higher estimate, but when the work is being done the final bill amount will come down. This is because they usually list all the components that they presume to be damaged, and will use the parts that are undamaged and good to use. For all frontal impacts, it is prudent to have the radiator et all checked, so let them do that.

Sometimes damage won't be visible from outside, so to be on the safer side, the service center puts most of the related parts in the equation. Remember if the initial investigation failed to observe any broken part or issue which found later, will not be entertained by the insurance for claim.

With higher estimate, I feel there are fatter chance of claim from the insurance.

I'm mentioning this because in your own words, "if my guts fail me".

As a regular long distance driver, you know there are incidents which cannot be avoided. Dont let your guts fail you. It will not be good for your future. Accidents happen. Dont let your confidence fail. Even the best drivers with the best cars and tyres and safety equipment crash occasionally.

When you are coming back, irrespective of what tyres you have, drive normally. It's natural that you will be extra alert, but that's fine.

Very nice advice sir, especially for new drivers like me. Thank you!

Haha.... Dont call me Sir! I'm also a newbie at driving. However, I met with a bad accident on my bike and I lost a little bit of confidence. Thankfully, I was able to overcome it and since that accident, I've ridden my bike for more than 20,000 kms and 4 years.

Nikhil- No damage to tyre as far as I noticed. And, this is my second major accident. First one was in 2008 and I was shaken after that. I felt shudders each time I went past the spot. That accident was entirely my fault.

As for the guts part, it was about braking with these tyres, as I found that the tyres started locking up more and more after our Chennai drive.

My father went to check the car and then they started reducing the damaged list. Current estimate is at 27k out of which we will have to pay 7500 odd as lot of plastics are involved, specially in the bumper part. And the worst part is, the plastics seems expensive. But this is not final, where if they find the plastics to be good enough not to be replaced, they would retain it and I hope on the positive side.

Then they will charge 5% for disposal of damaged parts to which we have said NO, as there is a scrap collector near my house and he will pay us for the scrap. What an innovative way to earn extra bucks!!! HYUNDAI.. you surprise me again and again.

I have to say that the parts for the Getz are stronger and hence far more expensive than Maruti's parts. Whereas my Zen incurred only 13k for worse damage, Getz has gone double the price for lesser. Will have to check with Swift prices to see where it stands.

Estimated time for work to be completed is this week, as parts have been ordered. Though I would be OK with 2 weeks also as I can go back to cochin only after 2 weeks due to work.

Hey Krish... I have been through one hell of an accident in 2005 July - check this: http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/885448-post1.html

Even when I was in bed for 3 months with two broken legs, I was raring to get back on feet - and sure did start riding / driving the moment I did. The only way to overcome the lack of confidence and the fear of the past repeating itself is to meet it head on. I'm sure a lot more careful than before, but thats about it - lesson learnt.

Am sure this will only be a learning experience of how things can go wrong even if you follow the rules to a 't', and will be behind you pretty soon

I have seen that some of these guys give higher estimates. Insurance claim is a time they can make money, just like the medical insurance, they will add up all that they can. replace this, replace that etc etc
It depends on who you come across, the people i know here, they do not overdo, but many places i know, they extract the most. Its quite expected, nothing to do with a manufacturer i feel.
