Re: Good-looking & powerful LED headlights for the Mahindra Thar?

See it's just not the brightness and beam pattern that matter with LEDs. The CRI also has a big impact on visibility so even a bright LED with a good cutoff might be lacking. HIDs on average would have 90+ but the average, even branded LED would be in the 70s or maybe 80s. In the same series though, a 3300k or 4300k led would generally have a slightly better cri than its higher Kelvin counterparts.
What I would suggest would be to find a nice popular mid range LED light with enough power and a good beam pattern and check if anyone has done a DIY upgrade to replace the stock LEDs with new ones. Source the highest CRI 4300k LEDs of the same type you can find and swap them.

I don't suggest you purchase this online, they seem to be available around specialist dealers who sell classic car parts, Jeep CJ parts, fiat parts etc.

Hella is listed online but I am not sure if they are genuine, again best to pick this up from a nearby trusted parts retailer.

For either of them ask for Sealed Beam 7 inch lens and reflector.

Option 2 - LED.

Sealed beam replacement with LED is available but the correct orientation for our traffic needs to be sourced , someone from Australia perhaps can ship it to India. I have not used such a setup yet however has seen one listed in various retailers in India including our BHPian's Swastik Fabs - it's called King Kong LED, pretty expensive but I think it maybe worth a try for those who want that premium white light look.

Re: Good-looking & powerful LED headlights for the Mahindra Thar?

I guess you could get XPLED projectors by Xenon Planet installed in your stock housing (they can be contacted through Instagram and may have an authorised installer in Mumbai).

And as everyone is suggesting that white LEDs don't work in fog/rain - Fog housing size is 3", which is perfect for most aftermarket projectors and they come in 3000K (JDM/Darjeeling Taxi Yellow) and 4300K as well which work great in bad weather.

Stock Thar headlamps do not cut the cake. I drove it at night and it was a sad experience.

Re: Good-looking & powerful LED headlights for the Mahindra Thar?

Just back from Hyderabad Mumbai trip in a Fortuner

Have Hella 470 LED bar installed and was fined twice (in day time) for the same by Maharashtra authorities. I paid 200 each time as "settlement". The fines will be heavier if they click a photo and than issue a challan - as it can't be then "negotiated"

On pleading with them that at night stock lights are insufficient and i strictly use these on demarcated highways...its just not allowed. BUT, Per them, the solution lies in upgrading the stock lights...they do not have any problem with that

If anyone here can clarify more on high quality premium lights which can replace a Fortuner's lights or preferably just replace the Fog light with something with long throw without touching the stock main lights

Don't have much knowledge here but i do remember reading somewhere that in 2021's Fortuner, Toyota has changed the Fog light housing and there is not much of space to go for after market powerful replacements. It was not the same earlier.

Re: Good-looking & powerful LED headlights for the Mahindra Thar?

I've been eyeing a pair of these Hella LED Projectors sold in Australia for my Gypsy.

Hella India now has a similar listing.

I wouldn't doubt their usability given they are Hellas.

Hella India has never imported this range stating the high cost (70ish K).

In the absence of these I would go with DB sir's recipe of Lucas lens + Philips 110/130 bulbs and maybe throw in a pair of Hella round LED driving lamps (not ValueFit).

Re: Good-looking & powerful LED headlights for the Mahindra Thar?

Thank you for creating this post GTO, like many Thar owners i too have been scouting for a perfect LED headlamp setup. I have visited a few accessories shops such as Futurz 4x4, VIG auto accessories, etc. that offer a wide variety of options such as the minus LED, G-wagon style, King-Kong, Wrangler style, etc. However I've been sceptical about the real world performance of these replacement headlamps, there are no proper reviews available online for these options.

I have temporarily gone for these Moco 72W H4 LED bulbs for the headlamps (these are not made in China), sharing a few picture below of the same. The performance is far superior to the stock bulbs within the city, i have yet to test the output on highway and different weather conditions.

However, the 'Stedi' headlight option that you have shared seems like a great option for the Thar. I will be seriously considering this as a great replacement for the stock unit.

Hi GTO, most of the LED headlights sold here are of very poor quality. Its better to get STEDI or KC HiLites or Morimoto 7 inch sealed headlamps for superior performance, if any of your friends can carry it along with them.

I am managing with below set up.

1. Upgraded the reflector to Original Hella (made in Germany)
2. Running 100/130W with Philips Relay
3. 55W FE Retrofit Bi-Xenon Projector lamp with high and low
4. Hella 470mm Light bar Pencil Beam

I never had to use Hella on highways as 1+2+3 itself is quite powerful.
Please refer my post for the output pics:
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-...ml#post5251439 (Initial Ownership Review & Modifications | 2021 Mahindra Thar)

I hear good feedbacks on Aozoom projectors as well.

Another option is to retrofit some bi-xenon/ laser/ Hella G5 projector on to the existing reflector. But, let that be done only by experienced hands.

Re: Good-looking & powerful LED headlights for the Mahindra Thar?

First things first. I hope that you have completely recovered after your recent accident.

About your requirement for headlight upgrades in your car, I am sure that you know that headlight modifications are illegal in consumer cars in India. However, there is also the fact that I have absolutely no right to tell you what you can or cannot do to/with your car. From a legally acceptable point of view, you can replace the headlamps bulbs with bulbs from Philips X-treme Vision or Osram Nightbreaker that consume the same amount of power as the stock bulbs but emit slightly more light.

Since there are very few restrictions on the modifications/upgrades/additions of fog lamps to consumer cars, the legally acceptable options here are much higher. However, there are two major legal restrictions that you need to worry about and they are as follows :-
1) If you decide to install additional foglamps then those cannot be installed above the horizontal level of the headlamps in your car.
2) If you decide to install additional foglamps then those need to be kept covered with black clothes during the day.

There is another rule about the additional fog lamps having to draw less power than the headlamps but this rule is often ignored by the authorities and very rarely implemented.

Obviously, if you just choose to upgrade the existing fog lamps then you do not need to worry about the restrictions mentioned above. Personally, I would suggest avoiding LEDs since they are rarely effective in retrofit scenarios like this, especially in foggy and rainy conditions. There are exceptions from brands like Clearwater, Morimoto, etc but those are nearly impossible to find here in India. HIDs (with a colour temperature around 4500-5000 Kelvin(K) with projectors would be an excellent choice here.

I hope this helps. Wish you happy and safe drives ahead

Thank you!
I had taken BD's advise on this and installed GE 140/100W bulbs with Hella wiring harness. Just install two separate relays for Low and High beam, it is plug and play. New Thar has glass reflectors so no issues on that front.
I have not come across to this level of light power with any LEDs available here.

Still If you are hell bent on getting LED, I will suggest RIGID Industries. The best (expensive though) out there

Re: Good-looking & powerful LED headlights for the Mahindra Thar?

My problem with LED - can't find anything reliable/ VFM that does 4300K to 5000K. All those 6500K white LEDs are all-show no-go, esp in rains/ inclement weather.

I'll be following this thread to see if anyone's found a good 7" headlamp that does 5000K or lower colour temperature - and is designed for RHD markets!

This is a great idea. I am using single Hella Relay with 130/100W bulb. Can you elaborate how we can connect two separate relays?
Each relay come with one H4 connection socket where we plug in the stock H4 pin (and leave the other one to rest) and two ceramic H4 holders which connect to bulbs.
High and Low gets activated with just one socket connection.
How should be the connection be done?

I am sure you would have tried 130/100W before going with 140/100W, is there a significant difference?

Thanks in advance.

Came across DHC on Instagram. Seems to be a little more convincing than the Chinese imports of unknown brands.

Nowhere have they mentioned where these are manufactured. I am pretty sure these are Chinese imports. It's just these are under a label.

Re: Good-looking & powerful LED headlights for the Mahindra Thar?

Juat get the latest aes projectors for fogs and be done with it. Will offer a significant upgrade. Halogens in main headlamps will help on those rainy days. For stage 2 you can retrofit a good pair of aes bi led projectors in headlamps as well and get a lighting upgrade that is better than even of luxury cars like the laser ones from bmw.
